Abstract
216,625. Jagger, M. P., (Representative of Jagger, P. B.)., and Harding, T. C. March 29, 1923. Untwisting ropes.-The strands of a rope or the separate wires, yarns &c. of a strand are unwound on a machine, in which two sets of three bobbins 28, Fig. 1, each mounted in fliers 26 are driven from a main drive shaft through a gear drive and there is interposed a slipping-component allowing the bobbins to slow down when necessary. The rope is drawn from a drum 1, Fig. 1<a>, passes between grip rolls 3, 4, the roll 3 having adjustable bearings, through a steadving-die 10, and through a central bore in a revolving head 11 to an opening plate 15. This plate is adjustable along three rods 25, which at one end are secured in the head 11 and at the other to the front ring 20, Fig. 1, of the flier supports. The core of the rope passes through a hollow shaft 24 to a reel, belt-driven from the main shaft, half the strands pass through the hollow trunnions of the front fliers, which are mounted between the ring 20 and a middle ring 21, and the other half pass through holes in the ring 20 and the trunnions of the back Biers, which are mounted between the ring 21 and a back ring 19. The three rings are secured to the shaft 24 and the front and middle ones are supported by rollers 22, 23. The shaft 24 is driven from the shaft main 39, Fig. 18, having fast and loose pulleys 40, 41, through gears 42, 43, a third gear 42<a> being interposed for reverse drive, counter shaft 45 and gears 46, 47. Horizontality of the fliers is maintained by gears 81 which are fast on the hollow trunnions 27 thereof, and which mesh with intermediate gears 80, rotatable on stub shafts 65 carried by the ring 19, these gears 80 mesh with a sun-wheel 79 fast on a non-rotatable sleeve, which surrounds the shaft 24 and is held fast in a bracket 78, the gears 79, 80, 81 being of equal diameter. Rotation of the bobbins 28, is imparted from the counter shaft 45 through gears 48, 49, shaft 50, gears 51, 52, shaft 53, gear 55 thereon, intermediate gear 56, gear 58, Fig. 2, gears 59, 60 and 61, 62, the gear 62 and a companion sun-wheel 63 being freely mounted on the sleeve which is held in the bracket 78. From the rotating sun-wheel 63 motion is transmitted through intermediate gears 64, running on the stub-shafts 65, to gears 66 fast on shafts 67 which pass through the hollow trunnions 27, and carry at their other ends bevels 68 meshing with bevels 69 on shafts 73 journaled in the fliers, and thence by chains to the bobbins 28 and strand distributors 31. The gear 52 is free on the shaft 53 but is connected to it through a slipping-component 54, which comprises semicircular straps 54<c>, Fig. 10, secured to the gear by angles 54e and surrounding a groove disc 54b secured to the shaft 53. The tightness of the straps around the disc is adjusted by connecting bolts 54d. A duplicate set of gears 51a, 52a and slipping-device 54<a> is provided as a stand-by in case of an emergency, or this duplicate set may be used together with the set 51, 52, 54. Different lays of rope are accomodated by exchanging the pair of gears 59, 60 for other pairs of different ratio.
