Abstract
A caravan or small dwelling (11) has an open space beneath it and a gas-fired space heater (13) mounted beneath the floor. Duct (19) has ends which are connected to open grills in the caravan floor so that air is drawn into the heater through one grill and heated air returned into the caravan through the other grill. A balanced flue (14) extends downwardly from the heater. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Gas-fired space heater
This invention relates to gas-fired space heaters intended for caravans or small dwellings with limited interior space.
The invention provides a fan assisted gasfired space heater adapted to be mounted to the exterior of a caravan or small dwelling and having ducts for communicating with the interior of the caravan or small dwelling.
The heater may be adapted to be mounted beneath a floor of the caravan or small dwelling, with provision for air from said ducts to pass substantially horizontally through the heater. The heater may have a balanced flue, extending vertically downwardly into open air space. The heater may have a heat exchanger providing horizontal plates between which the said air passes to be heated. The fans assisting the flow are preferably located in the same horizontal plane as the horizontal plates of the heat exchanger so that the heater is flat, i.e. has a small vertical dimension of the order of 1 5 cms and long horizontal dimensions of the order of 50 cms.
The heater may be adapted to be fuelled by bottled gas.
A specific embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a section through a caravan with a heating appliance, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the heating appliance of Fig. 1 with part of the casing removed.
A caravan has side walls (11) and a floor (12) supported on wheels or other supports (not shown) so as to leave an air space beneath the floor. While certain parts of the air space are taken up by structural and wheel members, much of this space is unused normally.
As shown in Fig. 1, a fan-assisted gas-fired convection heater (13) is mounted beneath the floor of the caravan. The heater has a balanced flue (14) extending downwardly therefrom to terminate in the air space. Combustion air is drawn in through the balanced flue by fan (15) to feed gas burners (not shown).
The exhaust fumes from the burners are directed through a heat exchanger (16) and out through the balanced flue. The operation of the combustion air fan (15) forces the exhaust fumes along this path, which normal convection could not do.
A rotary cylindrical fan (18) located beside the heat exchanger draws air in as described hereinafter, passes it over the heat exchanger (16) and then out into the space to be heated.
As seen in Fig. 1, the heater is located in a duct (19) beneath the caravan, each end of which opens into the floor of the caravan through a grill. Fan (18) draws air from the interior of the caravan through opening (20), and drives heated air into the caravan through opening (21). A limited ventilation air entry (22) in duct (19) allows fresh air to be entrained into the heated air stream. A filter is preferably incorporated into the entry (22).
It will be noted that the heated air movements through the heater are horizontal, i.e.
parallel to the caravan floor, and the heat exchanger plates also extend parallel to the caravan floor. The combusion air/exhaust flow path is generally upwardly and then downwardly. Clearly, therefore, it is essential that both heated air and combustion air are fan assisted. It will become clear that the heater can be located in many positions beneath the caravan floor, to suit the interior design of the caravan. The only interior space requirement of the heater is to allow for open grills for openings (20, 21). Since the arrangement of the heater provides horizontally extending heat exchanger plates and fans in the same plane, the heater has a smaller vertical dimension than its horizontal one and lies flat to the bottom of the caravan.
In an alternative arrangement (not shown) the duct (19) extends up into the caravan so that it can have vertical openings.
1. A gas-fired space heater adapted to be mounted to the exterior of a caravan or small dwelling, having ducts for conducting air from the interior, through the heater and back as heated air into the caravan or small dwelling, and fan means for driving the air through the ducts and heater.
2. A gas-fired space heater as claimed in claim 1, adapted to be mounted beneath the floor of a caravan or small dwelling, with provision for air from said ducts to pass substantially horizontally through the heater while being heated.
3. A gas-fired space heater as claimed in claim 2, having a balanced flue arranged to terminate beneath the floor of the caravan or small dwelling and a combustion air fan for drawing combustion air in through the flue.
4. A gas-fired space heater as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, having a ventilation air entry whereby fresh air may be entrained into the heated air.
5. A gas-fired space heater as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4 as appendant to claim 3, wherein there is a heat exchanger comprising normally horizontal plates between which the air may pass, the said fans mean comprising a rotary cylindrical fan located on the same horizontal plane as the plates of the heat exchanger, and the balanced flue extending verti cally downwards.
6. A caravan having a gas-fired space heater as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 and having openings in its floor providing entry and exit to the ducts of the space heater, the
