Abstract

A pulley assembly comprises a carrier body 10 and a pulley body 11 mounted on and for rotation with respect to the carrier body 10 by a bearing 12. The carrier body 10 has at one end a radially outwardly extending portion 18 and an axial spacing member 21 is mounted on the other end. The bearing 12 has a ring 13 supported by the carrier body 10 and positioned axially between the radially outwardly extending portion 18 and the spacing member 21. In order to allow the wall of the carrier body to be made thin, the bearing ring 13 is a sliding fit on the carrier body 10, the radially outwardly extending portion of the carrier body is a plain flange 18, and a mounting washer 20 is disposed such that the flange 18 is positioned axially between the bearing ring 13 and the washer 20. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A pulley assembly This invention is concerned with a pulley assembly.
Patent Specification GB 2102531 discloses a pulley assembly comprising an elongate generally tubular carrier body, a pulley body mounted on and for rotation with respect to the carrier body by a bearing, the carrier body having at one end a radially outwardly extending portion, and an axial spacing member is mounted on the other end of the carrier body, and positioned axially between the radially outwardly extending portion and the spacing member.
The carrier body in this known assembly is a cup-shaped member, the radially outwardly extending portion being a bead-like flange formed at the periphery of the closed end of the cup-shaped member. The axial spacing member is also cup-shaped and the open end of the carrier body extends into the open end of the axial spacing member. The rolling bearing is mounted on the carrier body between the bead-like flange and the rim of the open end of the spacing member. When the pulley assembly is mounted, the closed end of the spacing member abuts a mounting surface of, for example, an engine block. A screwthreaded bolt extends through openings in the closed ends of the cup-shaped members and into the engine block.When the bolt is tightened-up, the carrier body is pushed further into the spacing member and the bearing inner ring is clamped between the bead-like flange and the rim of the open end of the spacing member.
In order to provide an assembly, of which the components will stay together even during transit, the rolling bearing and the cup-shaped spacing member are both mounted on the carrier body as an interference fit. For the bearing inner ring to be secured firmly enough to the carrier body, the wall of the carrier body has to be relatively thick which means greater expense. Also, with an assembly having a bolt extending parallel to but offset to the bearing axis so that the tension of the belt can be adjusted by pivoting the assembly about the bolt, a relatively thick carrier wall reduces the amount by which the bolt can be offset. Further, since the head of the bolt acts on the closed end of the cup-shaped carrier body, this end wall must be thick enough to resist deformation when the bolt is tightened.
The subject of the invention is a pulley assembly in which the wall of the carrier body can be kept relatively thin.
According to the invention the bearing ring is a sliding fit on the carrier body, the radially outwardly extending portion of the carrier body is a plain flange, and a mounting washer is disposed such that the flange is positioned axially between the bearing ring and the washer.
Preferably, the pulley assembly has a screwthreaded bolt extending through the carrier body and the head of the bolt abuts the mounting washer. When the assembly is secured to a machine and the bolt tightened up, the bearing ring is clamped between the axial spacing member at one end and the flange, mounting washer and bolt head at the other.
The carrier body may thus have an extremely thin wall since in practice it acts merely as a support in transit for the bearing of the pulley assembly, allowing the components to be transported as a compact unit. With a thin wall, the pivoting of the pulley assembly is maximised since the distance of the shank of the bolt from the bore of the bearing ring is the thickness of the carrier body.
The axial spacing member may be a simple spacing sleeve for abutting against the machine or may be a carrier plate with additional means for adjusting, positioning or pivoting of the assembly.
The carrier body and the axial spacing member may be undetachably secured to each other by reason of their shape. Thus the spacing member and the bearing are prevented from sliding off the carrier body and yet the spacing member is easily displaced towards the bearing ring. The two may be secured together by the said other end of the carrier body being widened or extending radially outwardly into a recess or undercut of the spacing member.
The axial spacing member may be an interference fit on the carrier body. Again this prevents the bearing of the assembly from falling off the carrier body with the spacing member.
The fit is chosen to be tight enough to keep the spacing member and carrier body attached during transit, and yet loose enough to be overcome by tightening up the screw-threaded bolt.
An annular projection may extend from the outer periphery of the flange and axially away from the bearing ring, the mounting washer being seated in the bore of the projection.
The mounting washer can be an interference fit in the bore of the projection and so can be held in position and prevented from dropping out.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is half of a longitudinal section of a pulley assembly secured to an engine block.
The pulley assembly comprises an elongate generally tubular sheet metal carrier body 10, and an annular pulley body 11 mounted on and for rotation with respect to the carrier body by a rolling bearing 12.
The rolling bearing 12 is a radial deep groove ball bearing comprising an inner race ring 13, an outer race ring 14 and a single annular row of balls 15. The inner race ring 13 is a sliding fit on the carrier body 10.
The pulley body 11 is a sheet metal generally tubular body which has an inturned fold 16 at one end abutting one end face of the outer race ring 14 and projection 17, produced by a stalking operation, abutting the other end face of the outer race ring.
The carrier body 10 has at one end a radially outwardly extending plain annular flange 18 with an annular projection 19 extending from the outer periphery of the flange and axially away from the inner race ring 13. One end face of the inner race ring 13 abuts the flange 18. A mounting washer 20 is secured as a force fit in the bore of the annular projection 19 such that the flange 18 is located axially between the inner race ring 13 and the washer 20.
An axial spacing member 21 is mounted on the other end of the carrier body 10 so that the bearing 12 is positioned axially between the member and the flange 18. The spacing member 21 comprises an annular portion 22 surrounding the carrier body 10, a conical portion 23 extending from the end of the annular portion further from the bearing 12 and widening in the direction away from the bearing and a small annular radially outwardly extending plain abutment flange 24 at the wider end of the conical portion. The annular portion 22 is a slight interference fit on the carrier body 10. The end 25 of the carrier body 10 opposite to the flange 18 widens conically in the bore of the conical portion 23 of the spacing member 21 so that the carrier body and spacing member are undetachably secured by reason of their shape.The free end of the annular portion 22 abuts one end face of the inner race ring 13.
The components of the pulley assembly: carrier body 10, pulley body 11, bearing 12, washer 20 and spacing member 21, form a compact unit in which during transit the components do not fall apart.
In the drawing, the pulley assembly is shown secured to an engine block 26 by a screw-threaded bolt 27. The abutment flange 24 of the spacing member 21 abuts the engine block 26 and the rest of the pulley assembly is spaced from the engine block. The bolt 27 has a head which abuts the mounting washer 20 and a shank which extends through the mounting washer and the carrier body 10 and into a screw-threaded bore in the engine block 26. When the bolt 27 is tightened, the interference fit between the annular portion 22 of the spacing member 21 and the carrier body 10 is overcome and the inner race ring 13 is axially clamped between the flange 18 of the carrier body 10 and the free end of the annular portion 22. In this condition, the main tubular body of the carrier body 10 has no function.

Claims (5)

1. A pulley assembly comprising an elongate generally tubular carrier body, a pulley body mounted on and for rotation with respect to the carrier body by a bearing, the carrier body having at one end a radially outwardly extending portion, and an axial spacing member is mounted on the other end of the carrier body, the bearing having a ring supported by the carrier body and postioned axially between the radially outwardly extending portion and the spacing member, wherein the bearing ring is a sliding fit on the carrier body, the radially outwardly extending portion of the carrier body is a plain flange, and a mounting washer is disposed such that flange is positioned axially between the bearing ring and the washer.
2. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the carrier body and the axial spacing member are undetachably secured to each other by reason of their shape.
3. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the axial spacing member is an interference fit on the carrier body.
4. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein an annular projection extends from the outer periphery of the flange and axially away from the bearing ring, the mounting washer being seated in the bore of the projection.
5. A pulley assembly substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
