Abstract

A pulley assembly comprises a carrier body 10 and a pulley body 11 mounted on and for rotation relative to the carrier body 10 by a bearing 12. The carrier body is cup-shaped and has a radially outwardly extending flange 18 at the closed end 17. The bearing 12 has a radially inner ring 13 supported by the tubular part 16 of the carrier body 10. For an economical and simple construction a portion 19 of the tubular part 16 at the open end of the carrier body 10 overlies the axially adjacent part of the carrier body so that the bearing ring 13 is positioned axially between the flange 18 and the overlying part 19. The bearing ring 13 is also a sliding fit on the carrier body 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A pulley assembly This invention concerns a pulley assembly.
Patent Specification GB 2102531 discloses a pulley assembly comprising a carrier body and a pulley body mounted on and for rotation relative to the carrier body by a bearing.
The carrier body is cup-shaped and has a radially outwardly extending flange at the closed end and the bearing has a radially inner ring supported by the tubular part of the carrier body.
This known assembly further includes an axial spacing member which is also cup-shaped.
The open end of the carrier body extends into the bore of the open end of the axial spacing member so that the bearing inner ring is positioned axially between the bead-like flange of the carrier body and the free open end of the axial spacing member. When the pulley assembly is mounted, the closed end of the axial spacing member abuts a mounting surface of, for example, an engine block. A screwthreaded bolt extends through openings in the closed ends of the cup-shaped members and into the engine block. When the bolt is tightened-up, the carrier body is pushed further into the axial spacing member and the bearing ring is clamped between the flange of the carrier body and the rim of the open end of the spacing member.
Although this pulley assembly is reliable and easy to instal it has a drawback of having two cup-shaped members which means that it is relatively expensive.
The subject of the invention is an assembly which can be produced relatively cheaply and is of a simple construction.
According to the invention a portion of the tubular part at the open end of the carrier body overlies the axially adjacent part of the carrier body so that the bearing ring is positioned axially between the flange and the overlying part, and the bearing ring is a sliding fit on the carrier body.
With this construction, there is no axial spacing member so that only the cup-shaped carrier body is required. Preferably, during the construction of the assembly, the bearing ring abuts the flange of the carrier body whilst the overlying portion is formed to also abut the bearing ring. The pulley assembly is mounted by a screw-threaded bolt extending through the carrier body, the open end of the carrier body abutting a mounting surface and the head of the bolt abutting the closed end of the carrier body. As the bolt is tightened, by reason of elastic or plastic deformation of the carrier body, the bearing ring is clamped between the flange and the overlying portion.
Thus a construction of a pulley assembly is possible with low production costs yet which is able to be reliably fastened without radiai deformation of the bearing ring.
The overlying portion may be a continuous annular portion which can be formed by flanging. The rim that was the free end of the carrier body thus forms a continuous end face for abutting the bearing ring. With this construction the pulley body can be well spaced from the mounting surface.
Preferably, the overlying portion is one of a plurality of bent-over lugs spaced circumferentially from one another. In the production of the carrier body, the free end is slotted to provide lugs and bending over the lugs after the bearing has been mounted is a relatively simply operation. With this construction also, the pulley body can be well spaced from the mounting surface.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a longitudinal section through a pulley assembly secured to an engine block.
The pulley assembly shown comprises a carrier body 10 and a pulley body 11 mounted on and for rotation with respect to the carrier body by a bearing 12.
The bearing is a deep groove radial ball bearing comprising an inner racing ring 13, an outer race ring 14 and a single annular row of balls 15.
The pulley body 11 is a sheet metal two part construction which is a force fit on the outer race ring 14 of the bearing 12.
The carrier body 10 is a sheet metal cup shaped body having a generally tubular part 16 and a closed end 17. A radially outwardly extending annular bead-line flange 18 is formed at the closed end 1 7 during deep drawing of the carrier body 10 and the bearing inner ring 13, which is a sliding fit on the tubular part 16, abuts the flange 18.
The open end of the carrier body 10 comprises a plurality of portions or lugs 19 overlying the axially adjacent portion of the tubular part 16. The bent-over lugs 19 are spaced circumferentially from one another by slots 20.
The lugs 19 provide free end surfaces 21 which abut the bearing inner ring 13.
The pulley assembly is secured to an engine block 22 by a screw-threaded bolt 23 with the open end of the carrier body 10 abutting the engine block. The head of the bolt 23 abuts the outer surface of the closed end 17 of the carrier body 10, while the shank of the bolt extends through an opening in the closed end, through the bore of the carrier body and into a screw-threaded bore in the engine block 22. When the bolt 23 is tightened, by reason of a slight elastic or plastic deformation of the material of the carrier body 10, the inner ring 13 of the bearing 12 is clamped axially between the flange 18 and the end faces 21 of the lugs 19. The bolt 23 is offset from the axis of the bearing 12 so that the pulley assembly can be pivotted about the bolt in or der to adjust the tension of the pulley belt (not shown).
