Abstract

A woven garment label 12 is formed with two or more pockets 13, and a plurality of inserts 16 of plastics material bearing initial letters or symbols are received by the pockets 13 in such a way as to display the letters or symbols borne by the inserts. Each pocket is open at its upper end only, or at both its upper and lower ends. Each insert has a display face 16 and a mounting lug (18) receivable in the pocket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Garment label This invention relates to a label for use on garments.
The invention has been developed primarily with a view to provide a garment label for use in men's suit jackets, sports jackets, blazers and trousers, though it should be understood that a garment label according to the invention is not restricted to such use, and may be employed with other garments as desired, such as overcoats.
It is well known that woven labels are stitched onto the inside of men's jackets in order to designate the name, or trade name, of a manufacturer, designer or sales outlet. However, if a potential purchaser wishes to be able to "personalise" the label, by applying his initials thereto, this can only be done by subsequent stitching or adhesion of appropriate separately formed letters onto the label, or by stitching onto the label in the outline shape of the required initial letters.
Therefore, there exists a need to provide a garment label which can readily have one or more initial letters (or symbols) applied thereto at the point of sale, without the need to attach such letters using stitching or other time-consuming or laborious methods.
According to the invention there is provided a woven garment label which is formed with two or more pockets, and a plurality of inserts bearing initial letters or symbols which are receivable by said pockets in such a way as to display the letters or symbols borne by the inserts.
Usually, a set of inserts will be provided with the letters of the alphabet, and the seller of a garment bearing the label can readily mount inserts bearing the required initial letters into the pockets, when a purchase is completed. This enables the seller to provide an additional customer service (to enhance sales) and in very simple manner, without requir ing any skilled labour e.g. hand or machine stitch ing of letters onto the label.
The garment label is woven, and the pockets are formed during the weaving of the label. The pock ets may be formed to be somewhat similar to the (hook retainer) bands which are provided along the upper edges of curtains, and which have longitudi nally spaced vertical "tunnels" through which are taken the ends of curtain hooks. However, while the "pockets" in a garment label according to the invention may be formed by tunnels which are open at each end e.g. open at top and bottom, it is preferred that each pocket is closed at its bottom end, since this provides a more visually pleasing appearance for the label.
The inserts are preferably made of plastics mate rial, and have plane display faces on which the re quired letters are applied, and mounting lugs behind the display faces which are receivable by the pockets. Thus, the lugs are received by the pockets in order readily to mount the inserts on the label, and are then concealed from view. The respective display faces then partly overlie the front surfaces of the pockets.
Conveniently, the garment label is woven with two portions, namely a portion which incorporates the pockets and a further display portion onto which may be applied a trade name or trade mark.
One embodiment of garment label according to the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a garment label for use internally or externally on a garment; Figure 2 is a section taken on the line ll-ll in Figure 1; Figures 3a and 3b are front and rear views respectively of an insert for use with the garment label shown in Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 4 is a schematic illustration of the means by which inserts can be replaceably mounted in pockets provided in the garment label.
Referring now to the drawing, a garment label according to the invention is designated generally by reference numeral 10, and is a woven label which is formed with a first display portion 11 on which a trade mark or trade name can be applied e.g. by stitching, and a second display portion 12 which comprises a plurality of individual pockets 13. In the illustrated arrangement, five pockets 13 are provided, though more or less than this number may be provided as desired. The formation of the portion 12 is somewhat similar to the formation of the hook-retainer band provided along the upper edges of curtains, to receive curtain hooks.
However, in the illustrated arrangement, each pocket 13 is open only at its upper end 14, and is closed at its bottom end 15. Each pocket 13 is therefore a double-walled construction, having access thereto via the upper open end 14.
A plurality of inserts will be provided, for use with the label 10, the inserts bearing initial letters or symbols which an intending purchaser of a garment bearing the label may select.
There is shown in Figures 3a and 3b one insert 16 of plastics material, which is receivable in any one of the pockets 13 in such a way as to display the letter or symbol (not shown) borne by the insert.
Usually, a set of inserts will be provided to the seller, bearing all the letters of the alphabet, and the seller of a garment bearing the label can readily mount inserts bearing the required initial letters into the pockets 13 when a purchase is completed.
Each insert 16 has a front face 17 on which a letter or symbol can be displayed, and a mounting lug 18 behind the display face 17 which is receiva ble by any selected one of the pockets 13. Each lug 18 is spaced by a small distance from the general plane of the face 17, so that the lug 18 can be received behind the front wall of a pocket 13, with such wall being located between the lug 18 and the front face 17. Thus, the lug 18 serves readily to mount the insert 16 on the label 10, and is then concealed from view. The respective display face 17 then partly overlies the front wall of the respective pocket 13.
Figure 4 illustrates schematically successive steps in mounting or dismounting an insert 16 relative to a selected pocket 13.
