Abstract

A trolley (1) with provision for the storage of foodstuffs comprises a heating compartment (8) and a refrigerating compartment (9). Preferably the temperature in both compartments is maintained by a single refrigeration unit (7). The evaporating coil 25 is located on the vertical wall 3 of the refrigerating compartment 9 for cooling the compartment 9, and the condenser formed by a coil 15 is located in the heating compartment 8 for heating the compartment. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A trolley for the storage of foodstuffs The present invention relates to a trolley with provision for the storage of foodstuffs.
Such trolleys are useful when entertaining guests at occasions such as dinner parties, as they allow food to be prepared before the party by keeping it hot before and during the meal.
The trolleys used at present comprise one or more compartments which are heated by electrical coils or the like; However, no refrigeration compartment is provided for cooling foodstuffs such as desserts or for making ice.
According to the present invention, there is provided a trolley with provision for the storage of foodstuffs comprising a heating compartment and a refrigerating compartment.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trolley according to the invention; Figure 2 illustrates part of the internal structure of the trolley shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a diagram of a refrigeration unit for use in the present invention; Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line IV-IV of Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line V-V of Figure 1.
Referring to the above figures, a trolley with provision for the storage of foodstuffs is generally indicated at 1. The trolley comprises a body 2 the inside of which is divided into compartments by a vertical wall 3 and a horizontal wall 4. The vertical wall 3 extends from the bottom 5 of the body up to the horizontal wall 4 and defines a space 6 where a refrigeration unit 7 is located. The horizontal wall 4 extends across the entire cross-section of the body 2 in such a way that it defines an upper compartment 8 for heating food and a lower compartment 9 for refrigerating food. The refrigerating compartment may be provided with a unit 10 for making ice.
Doors 11 and 12 allow access to compartments 8 and 9 respectively.
As illustrated in Figure 3, the refrigeration unit for use in the present invention comprises a compressor 13 for pressurizing refrigerantvapourvia a normally open valve 14 into a two-stage condenser formed by a coil 15, and a radiator 17 downstream of the coil 15.
The coil and radiator are connected in series by means of a one way valve 16.
The refrigerant may be diverted either partially or completely to bypass the coil 15 by passing it through a branch 18 at the ends of which are positioned a normally closed valve 19 (upstream) and a one way valve 20 (downstream). The radiator 17 is in the form of a finned tube heat exchanger cooled by a motor-fan assembly 21 controlled by a temperature control unit 22 and a related temperature sensor 23. Downstream of the radiator 17, a capillary member 24 is provided which is coupled to an evaporator coil 25 which in turn is coupled to the input side of the compressor 13.
As illustrated in Figures 2 and 4, the evaporating coil 25 is located on the vertical wall 3 of the refrigerating compartment 9, for cooling the compartment 9, and the coil 15 is located on the horizontal wall 4 inside the heating compartment 8 for heating the compartment 8.
In order to insulate the two above mentioned compartments 8 and 9, the body 2 and walls 3 and 4 of the trolley may be made of or include any suitable thermally insulative material.
From the description of the refrigeration unit 7 it will be evident that the provision of the branch 18 and valves 14 and 19 allows the passage of the refrigerant through the coil 15 to be adjusted, so that the temperature of the heating compartment can be regulated.
A manually operated control unit 28 is arranged to allow the setting of different operating conditions, e.g. by controlling the relative positions of the valves 14 and 19.
The refrigeration unit may include a further valve 29 which is normally closed and an evaporator bypass pipe 30. The valve 29 is opened as part of a cycle controlled by the control unit 28, and allows for the removal of ice cubes once they are formed in unit 10. The ice cubes fall into a tray 32 provided for their storage located in the refrigerating compartment.
The removal of the ice cubes is performed by a motorized system 31 which may also be controlled by the control unit 28.
The trolley described above thus uses the refrigeration unit for both heating and refrigerating, allowing the trolley to operate with excellent efficiency using only the power required to operate the unit, i.e. that used for refrigeration.
The trolley may include one or more shelves 26 and 27 which can be withdrawn from within the trolley to act as tables.
1. A trolley with provision forthe storage of foodstuffs comprising a heating compartment and a refrigerating compartment.
2. Atrolley according to claim 1, wherein a refrigeraton unit both cools the refrigerating compartment and heats the heating compartment.
3. Atrolley according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the temperature of both compartments is maintained and regulated by a refrigeration unit.
4. A trolley according to claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the refrigeration unit comprises a condensor circuit and an evaporator circuit, at least part of the condensor circuit being located within the heating compartment, and at least part of the evaporator circuit being located within the refrigerating compartment.
5. Atrolley according to claim 4wherein the condensor circuit includes an upstream heater coil located in the heating compartment and a downstream radiatortogetherwith a heater coil bypass and valve means for adjusting the proportion of refrigerant passing through the heater coil.
6. Atrolley according to claim 4 or claim 5
