Abstract

216,426. Blaney, W. T. Oct. 1, 1923. Filtering.-A dust-separator comprises adjacent chambers which respectively receive dust-laden and purified air and communicate through a filter from which the dust is removed periodically by jarring the chambers. Coarse and fine dust may be removed separately. The apparatus shown comprises a hopper having an upper cylindrical portion 1 and a lower conical portion 2, a lid 3 being secured to the cylindrical portion by springs which yield in case of a dust explosion. A cylindrical baffle 15, Fig. 3, depends from the lid, and a conical hopper 7 is spaced apart within the conical portion 2. Within the cylindrical portion a series of filter tubes 11 are disposed, carried by plates 8, 9. The upper ends of these tubes are formed with extensions 14 flared upwards to fit against each other and prevent the settling of dust above the plate 8. Dusty air is admitted through a tangential inlet 16, Fig. 1, to the space about the baffle 15, and deposits coarse dust in the space 16<1> between the hoppers, falling into a trough 18 from which it is removed bv a convever 19. The air flows upwards on the other side of the baffle 15 to the space above the plate 8, and thence through filter tubes into the chambers between the plates 8, 9, from which it passes through pipes 17 into the atmosphere. Dust shaken from the interior of the tubes falls into a tubular casing 21 from which it is removed by a conveyer 20. The casing 21 passes through the trough 18, the space between the casing and the trough allowing dust to fall freely to the lower conveyer. The outlet of each conveyer casing is partly obstructed by a wedge-like device 25 on which a valve 27 is pivoted, the dust thus being packed together to form an air seal. The apparatus is pivotally mounted on a base frame 28, the axis coinciding with that of the conveyer 19; the two conveyers are driven through gearing from a. shaft 30. The shaking means comprises a pitman 40, Fig. 1, passing through a tube 37 and pivoted to a bracket 38 on the hopper. This pitman is reciprocated outwards by a cam on a shaft 33 rotated by chain gearing from the conveyer drive, and is returned sharply by a spring within the tube 37, a cushion or pad 43 above the tube receiving the impact of the hopper.
