Description

SPECIFICATION Method of construction of composite pulleys pressed from sheet incorporating several modular pulleys and the resulting pulley assembly The invention relates to a method of the construction and assembly of composite pulleys pressed from sheet comprising several modular pulleys which are spaced apart by annular spacers which also act as a hub and are secured together to a butt flange by bolts passing through the disc portions of the pulleys, the said flange being formed from two concentric members which interconnect together by means of mutually cooperating tapering surfaces upon tightening of the bolts.
The mounting of pulleys, generally of the cast aluminium type, in a group and provided with a hub having a slot for receiving a key securing them to a transmission shaft, is known.
The object of the invention is to seek to provide for the simple, more rapid and more economical construction of composite pulleys assembled and secured together into a sheave and separated by spacers which also constitute the hub of the resulting sheave for mounting on a transmission shaft.
According to the present invention there is provided a method for the construction and assembly of composite pulleys comprising several modular disc pulleys without hubs, characterised by placing individual disc pulleys parallel to one another, spaced apart by annular spacers and securing the disc pulleys together with the spacers between an end flange and a butt flange connected together in directions parallel to the axis by means of securing bolts which pass through the disc portions of the said pulleys, and in that at least the butt flange is formed from two concentric annular members which are brought together by means of tapering abutment surfaces upon tightening of the said bolts.
The present invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a partially exploded view of the constituent components of a composite pulley; and Figure 2 shows a partial longitudinal crosssection through an assembled composite pulley.
In the drawings, individual modular pulleys 1 are shown which are intended to form a composite sheave. Each of the pulleys 1 is formed of a disc body 2 having a central hole 3 and has, at the periphery, a V-shaped region 4 defining a groove for a transmission belt, the said V-shaped region 4 being constructed by e.g. cutting a peripheral part of disc body 2 radially and then separating the two resulting portions in order to form the groove, However, this does not exclude the possibility that the individual modular pulleys 1 may be constructed in any other manner and have circumferential teeth for a transmission chain instead of a groove for a belt or cable without going beyond the scope of the invention.
The modular pulleys 1 are placed parallel to one another, spaced apart by inserted annular spacers 6 and are secured as a sheave by means of a butt flange 8 and an outer opposing flange 7 as will be described below.
The annular spacers 6, placed between individual pulleys 1, each have at least one edge a peripheral offset or step 6' which engages the edge bounding the central hole 3 of the disc body 2 of each pulley 1.
The outer flange 7 rests against the surface of disc body 2 of the outermost pulley 1, while the butt flange 8 rests against the surface of disc body 2 of the pulley 1 placed at the inner end of the composite sheave.
In the embodiment illustrated, the butt flange 8 is constructed from two annular members 9 and 10, one being internal and one being external, which interengage one another by means of two tapering mutually cooperating surfaces 9' and 10', on the outside surface of inner member 9 and on the inside of outer member 10, respectively. The inner member 9 also has an offset or step 19 similar to spacers 6 on which the disc body 2 of the pulley 1 adjacent to the butt flange 8 is centred and fitted.
The annular spacers 6 and similarly the flange 7 and the inner member 9 of butt flange 8 bound an axial hole or seat 11, which has a diameter corresponding to that of a transmission shaft 11' on which the resulting composite sheave is to be mounted.
The outer flange 7 is provided with a series of holes 17 which are spaced angularly and coincide axially with corresponding holes 12 in the disc body 2 of each of the individual pulleys 1, while the outer member 10 of flange 8 has threaded holes 20 which are coaxial with the said holes 17 and 12. Securing bolts 13 are provided, whose heads 14 rest against flange 7, while the corresponding threaded portions are screwed into the threaded holes 20 of the outer member 10 of butt flange 8 after being inserted through holes 17 and 12 of flange 7 and pulleys 1, respectively. In this way the pulleys 1 are secured together, with spacers 6, between flanges 7 and 8 so as to form an integral whole in the form of a composite sheave, in which the spacers 6 and the flanges 7, 8 form the hub for mounting the pulleys on a transmission shaft 11' as illustrated in Fig. 2.
