Abstract

A spacer device 12 is adapted to be fitted between the bridge of a pair of spectacles and the bridge the nose of the wearer of the of spectacles, such as to lift the central part of the lenses of the spectacles above their normal position and into the line of sight of the wearer when the wearer is looking along a cue, for example when playing billiards, snooker or pool. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Spectacles The invention relates to spectacles.
It has long been known that spectacles are particularly inconvenient to wear when playing games involving the use of a cue, such as billiards, snooker or pool. In order to use a cue effectively it is usually necessary to bend low over the cue and sight along it. In this position the wearer of the spectacles tends to be looking through the upper part of the lenses of the spectacles, rather than through the central part of the lenses and the user may therefore get a distorted or otherwise unsatisfactory view. It may even be the case that the upper part of the spectacle frame gets into the line of sight.
One solution is to wear contact lenses but many people find contact lenses unsatisfactory and for these people the only solution to date has been to wear expensive specially designed spectacles, for example with lenses which can be swivelled upwardly to put the central part of the lenses into the line of sight when looking along a cue.
I have now discovered that the problem can be solved by a very simple and cheap expedient.
Accordingly my invention comprises a spacer device adapted to be fitted between the bridge of a pair of spectacles and the bridge of the nose of the wearer of the spectacles, such as to lift the central part of the lenses of the spectacles above their normal position and into the line of sight of the wearer when the wearer is looking along a cue.
Preferably the spacer device comprise a V or U-shaped saddle member arranged to be fitted over the bridge of the spectacles.
The space member may for example be made of rubber or plastics material.
The spacer member may have a groove of varying width (e.g. tapered) to suit varying thicknesses of spectacle bridge.
The spacer device may be arranged to clip into position.
The spacer device may be made of material which can be shaped or formed (e.g. by cutting) by the user to suit any size of spectacle bridge.
The invention includes a pair of spectacles when fitted with a removable spacer device, the spacer device being fitted to the bridge of the spectacles so as to engage the bridge of the nose of the wearer of the spectacles during use, thus lifting the spectacles above their normal position such that the lenses of the spectacles lie in the line of sight of the wearer when the wearer is looking along a cue.
By way of example, a specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of spectacles fitted with a spacer device according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the spacer device shown in Fig. 1; and Figure 3 is a plan view of the spacer device shown in Fig. 1.
The spectacles 10 shown in Fig. 1 are themselves conventional steel-framed spectacles but fitted over the bridge 11 of the spectacles, from the underneath thereof, is a spacer device in the form of a rubber saddle member 1 2. The lower part of the saddle member engages with the bridge of the nose of a wearer of the spectacles, thus lifting the spectacles slightly from their normal position.
This is sufficient to put the central portion of the lenses 1 3 of the spectacles into the line of sight of the wearer of the spectacles when the wearer is looking along a cue. Thus the spectacles, when used during a game which requires a cue, no longer rest on the conventional nose engagement pieces 14 but are supported instead upon the saddle member 12.
As best seen from Figs. 2 and 3, the saddle member comprises a small block of rubber having a curved underside 1 5 and a V-shaped groove 1 6 in its upper face. The face 1 7 which engages with the nose of the wearer of the spectacles is provided with a small concavity 18 so as to mate more comfortably with the bridge of the nose.
The groove 1 6 is such that the saddle member may be pushed into position on various different thicknesses of spectacle bridge, the frictional properties of the rubber assisting in maintaining the bridge in position.
The spacer member shown in the Figures provides a very simple and cheap expedient whereby a wearer of spectacles can conveniently adjust the spectacles for wear during a game which requires the use of a cue, without the need to wear contact lenses or purchase expensive adjustable spectacles. The spacer device can readily be carried in a pocket and be fitted into position whenever it is required.
It can equally well be conveniently removed whenn it is desired to return the spectacles to their normal position.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment. For example the shape of the groove 1 6 may be varied to suit different shapes of bridge. The spacer member may be made from any convenient material including plastics, cork, foamrubber, textile material, or even metal.
If desired the spacer member may be constructed so that it can be clipped or snapfitted into position.
The spacer member may be provided with various projections or the like, for example ribs or fins, which can be cut away or formed to fit the spacer member to any desired spec tacle bridge. Alternatively the groove 16 itself may be such that its dimensions can be altered, for example by cutting, to suit any desired spectacle bridge.
