Abstract

Plastics sheet secondary glazing is held in place by magnetic or 'touch and close' strips. The sheet can be raised by rolling around a bottom roller.

Description

SPECIFICATION Secondary glazing This invention relates to a system of Secondary Double Glazing incorporating clear plastic film or sheet and a suitable sealing method, with a method of breaking the seal and resealing at will, to enable the fixed window to be opened, or for cleaning the fixed window without having to completely remove the secondary clear plastic film or sheet which provides the Double Glazing medium, and can be simply fitted by any person without prior experience, using only a knife, scissors, or any other suitable cutting means.
Secondary double glazing incorporating clear plastic film or sheet and a suitable sealing method is well known, but has hitherto been looked upon as a more or less temporary method involving the complete removal of the plastic film or sheet and the permanent breaking of the seal, if it is required to open or clean the fixed window.
Invariably, the plastic film or sheet and the sealing method cannot be re-used and has to be completely replaced. Such sealing methods in the past have incorporated such things as double-sided adhesive tape or magnetic tape.
According to the present invention there is provided a sealing method such as a "touch 8 close" sealing and fastening strip presently sold under the trade name of "VELCRO" or other name, or a double magnetic tape, together with a means-such as a wood (or other material) roller of suitable shape or length, enabling the plastic film or sheet to be wound around it from bottom to top, or top to bottom, or sideways, thus breaking the seal (except at one edge), and a means of retaining the rolled plastic film or sheet in position when the double glazing method is not re quired to be in use, as, for example, to enable the fixed window (or windows) to be opened or closed for ventilation or cleaning, and then re-sealing the plastic film or sheet by unwinding in the reverse direction on to the sealing means.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a typical fixed window such as is found in any house or building and is usually glazed with glass and may have an opening section or sections.
Figure 2 shows the same window with the sealing strips 1 applied either by an adhesive backing, or stapling, or nailing, or by any other suitable means.
Figure 3 shows the sheet, or sheets, of clear plastic film 2 (eg. a film such as that going under the trade name of "MELINEX") with the corresponding sealing strips 3 applied by an adhesive backing, or stapling, sewing, or other suitable means, and with the roller device 4 fastened to it by any suitable means such as an adhesive, stapling, or nailing.
Figure 4 shows a side sectional view of the window with plastic film or sheet in the closed (or double glazing position).
Figure 5 shows a side sectional view of the window with the plastic film or sheet rolled up from the bottom in the open position, thus enabling the fixed window to be opened or cleaned, the plastic film or sheet being retained in the open position by any suitable means.
Figure 6 shows an enlarged view of one method of retaining in the open (rolled) position using "touch s close" fastening strip or magnetic strip 5 which rolls on to the two members of the strip, thus retaining the rolled plastic in position.
Figure 7 shows an alternative retaining method utilising a strip or strips in the form of a loop or loops 6 the ends of which are pressed together.
Figure 8 shows another alternative retaining method utilising a hook or hooks 7, or other suitable anchorage.

CLAIMS
1. A permament system of secondary double glazing incorporating clear plastic film or sheet and a suitable sealing method, with a method of breaking the seal and re-sealing at will, to enable the fixed window to be opened for ventilation, or for cleaning the fixed window, without having to completely remove the plastic film or sheet which provides the double glazing medium, and can be simply fitted by any person without prior experience, using only a knife, scissors, or any other suitable cutting means.
2. A system of openable secondary double glazing which provides a more efficient seal to keep out draughts.
3. A system of openable secondary double glazing which is considerable cheaper than existing systems which incorporate glass as the double glazing medium.
4. A cheap system of openable secondary double glazing which can be easily applied to existing fixed windows made of wood, plastic, metal, or any other material, as described in the preceding claims.
4. A system of openable secondary double glazing which can be easilly and quickly fitted by any person without prior experience, using only a knife, scissors, or any other suitable cutting means. For ease of fitting, the preferred method is to apply sealing strips to the facing wood or metal of the fixed window by cutting to the required length and fixing in position. Corresponding lengths of sealing strips are then cut and pressed on to those which have been previously applied to the fixed window. As fixed windows are generally not truly "square" or may vary in size, the plastic film or sheet is then cut to size allowing-say about " to 41" all round larger than the overall dimensions measured across the outer edges of the sealing strips previ ously applied to the fixed window. In the case of sealing strips incorporating a pressure sensative adhesive which is protected by a waxed paper or other coating, this protective coating is now removed and the plastic film or sheet is pressed into positions so that it adheres to the sealing strips. If desired, the plastic film or sheet, may then be cut accurately to size using the edge of the sealing strips as a guide. The roller is then cut to the required length and fastened to the back of the plastic film or sheet by using a contact adhesive or other suitable means. After fixing the desired retaining method, the plastic film or sheet may then be wound around the roller, thus breaking the seal until it is rolled into the required position.
