Abstract

An extension telephone lead comprises a length of telephone line cord 14 having an extension jack unit socket 16 fitted to it at one end and a standard modular telephone plug 15 fitted to its other end. The line cord 14 is wound on a recoil hub 12 which is mounted for rotation within a portable casing 10 having a handle 11. The jack unit socket 16 is mounted on the hub 12. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Leads for Portable Telephones This invention relates to leads for portable telephones.
Currently portable telephones are either radio telephones or are telephone sets fitted permanently to one end of a lead comprising a length of line cord which is plugged into a jack unit at its other end, the jack unit being installed at a fixed location. Radio telephones are expensive but have the advantage that they are usable anywhere. Although cheaper than radio telephones, conventional telephone sets with leads suffer from the disadvantage that they can be used only within the area that can be swept by the lead when it is plugged into the jack unit.
Each installation for a subscriber, or other form of user of a telephone line, has a main jack unit to which the telephone line is connected. There may be one or more extensions which each comprise an extension jack unit which is connected to the telephone line in the main jack unit by a length of line cord.
There may be other extensions which comprise an extension jack unit which is connected to the telephone line indirectly by connection of its own length of line cord to the length of line cord by which an extension jack unit is connected directly to the telephone line, the two lengths of line cord being connected together in the latter extension jack unit.
Each jack unit, be it a main jack unit or an extension jack unit, has a socket for the plug on the lead of a portable telephone set, the socket being adapted to make a connection between the lead of the telephone set and the telephone line either directly in the case of a main jack unit or indirectly in the case of an extension jack unit. The principal difference between a main jack unit and an extension jack unit is that a capacitor is incorporated in the main jack unit, that capacitor being the capacitor of the telephone bell circuit for the complete installation regardless of how many extension jack units are provided in circuit connection with the main jack unit of the installation.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided an extension telephone lead comprising a length of telephone line cord having a jack unit socket fitted to it at one end and a plug fitted to its other end for insertion into a jack unit socket.
The jack unit socket may be an extension line jack unit.
The line cord may be wound on a recoil hub, the jack unit socket to which the line cord is fitted at one end being mounted on the hub. Provision of the recoil hub leads to the effective length of the extension telephone lead being variable.
According to another aspect of this invention, a portable telephone set has a recoil hub housed within its casing, there being a lead for the telephone set wound on the recoil hub and having one of its ends connected to the telephone equipment within the casing and its other end fitted to a plug outside the casing, the plug being for plugging into a jack unit socket.
One embodiment of this invention is described now, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a portable recoil hub having an extension lead for a portable telephone set wound on it, a jack unit mounted on the hub being shown displaced therefrom for clarity.
There drawing shows a portable recoil hub device compl-.sing a casing 10 having a handle 11 and a hub 1 2 mounted for rotation therein. An aperture 1 3 is formed in one side of the casing 1 0. A recoil mechanism (not shown) is incorporated in the device. The recoil mechanism allows the hub 1 2 to be rotated in one angular sense (viz. clockwise as seen in the drawing) against the action of an energy storage device which is loaded by such rotation so that the hub 1 2 is returned in the opposite angular sense to its start position automatically by relaxation of the energy storage device when the hub 1 2 is released.
Means are provided for releasably locking the hub 1 2 in a selected position to which it is rotated against the action of the energy storage device.
A line cord 14, conveniently a four-way colour coded line cord, is wound on the recoil hub 12 and led through the aperture 13. A plug 1 5 for plugging into a socket of a jack unit is fitted in the usual way to the end of the line cord 1 4 outside the casing 10. The plug 1 5 is a standard modular telephone plug. The other end of the line cord 14 within the casing 10 is connected to an extension line jack unit 1 6 which is fitted on the hub 1 2 at its centre.
When the device is used, the plug 1 5 is plugged into the socket of a jack unit, which may be a main jack unit or an extension line jack unit. That jack unit may be the jack unit that is installed at a fixed location or may be a jack unit fitted to the hub of a similar portable recoil hub device. The length of line cord 14 wound on the hub 1 2 is drawn out from the casing 10, against the action of the energy storage device, until sufficient is played out to enable connection to an extension telephone set at a selected location. The line jack unit fitted to the hub 1 2 receives a plug, similar to the plug 1 5 and is thereby connected to a telephone set either directly through the line cord at the end of that plug or indirectly via one or more similar portable recoil hub devices and the line cord of the telephone hand set that is to be used.
In another embodiment of this invention, a telephone hand set has a recoil hub housed within its casing. A line cord is wound on the recoil hub, is connected at one end in the usual way to the telephone equipment within the telephone set and is led from the hub through an aperture in the casing of the telephone set to a plug at its other end, the plug being for plugging into a socket of a jack unit. When the telephone set is used the line cord may be played out to allow transport of the telephone set away from the fixed jack unit. A releasable brake device may be provided in the casing of the telephone set for locking the line cord in an extended position during use of the telephone. Hence the effective length of the line cord by which the telephone set is connected to the jack unit is variable.
