Description
SPECIFICATION
Garment with means for holding a portable audio instrument
The present invention relates to a garment especially a vest with means for holding a portable audio instrument.
Recently, small portable audio instruments, such as tape recorders and radios, each comprising a mechanical body and a headphone, are in great vogue. When a headphone is worn or used, a wearer may concentrate on-listening to sound solely from the headphone. This will satisfy the listener, but if the volume is high, sound from the headphone will harm the listener's hearing as well as causing problems in that necessary sounds, such as a voice talking to or warning the wearer, cannot be heard. It is, therefore, preferable not to use a headphone directly covering the ears.
When a portable audio instrument as stated above is used an audio body is held by the user, such as by keeping it in a pocket of a jacket or attaching it to a belt of the wearer, and a headphone is worn. Generally, the headphone is connected to the audio body by a relatively long cord, which can be a hindrance for the user. If there were not a long cord, that would be much more comfortable for the user of the portable audio instrument.
Accordingly, an object of the invention is to provide a garment wherein a portable audio instru -ment including an-audio-body, headphone and cord is substantially held inside the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment as stated above, in which a pair of speakers of a headphone is located not directly on but adjacent to the ears of the user.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment as stated above, which can be simply converted into a jacket or a vest;
A garment in accordance with the present invention is adapted for holding a portable audio instrument including an audio body, a speaker device, and a cord for connecting the audio body and the speaker device. The garment comprises a main body portion to be worn by a user, a neck portion connected to the main portion and having means to hold the speaker device thereat, and means for holding the cord connected to or forming part of the main body portion. The cord holder may extend substantially from the top end near the neck portion to the bottom area of the main body portion for holding therein the cord. The garment is preferably provided with at least one pocket at the main body portion.The pocket preferably includes a hole and is adapted to support the audio body therein so that the cord can be connected to the speaker device by passing through the hole in the pocket and the cord holder.
The neck portion of the garment preferably comprises inner and outer neck sections, and a fastener attached to the neck portion. A space is formed between the inner and the outer neck sections for immovably holding the speaker device therein. When the fastener is -opened, the speaker device can be located in the space.
The neck portion preferably includes the two seat portions in the space, and a through hole near one of the seat portions. When the speaker device includes two head speakers, the head speakers are immovably held in the respective seat portions in the space. The cord connected to the head speakers passes through the through hole, and then enters into the cord holder.
The pocket is preferably in the form of a pouch and includes means for holding a material, preferably a strip connected at one end to the pouch and detachably connected at the other end to the pouch. When the audio body is big and unable to be held in the pocket, the pouch is located outside the main body portion, so that the audio body can be hung from the strip.
The garment is preferably a front opening type, and the main body portion preferably comprises an outer material and a lining having a hole adjacent to the hole of the pocket. The cord holder can be connected inside the lining adjacent to the front open edge of the garment.
The garment is preferably formed of a vest section having a plurality of first fastening means, and a shoulder and arm section having a plurality of second fastening means engaging the first fastening means. The vest section can be solely used for holding the audio instrument, but if it is cold, the shoulder and arm section may be attached to the vest section by engaging the first and second fastening means. Consequently, a jacket is formed.
Further advantages and preferred features of the invention will be apparent from the following description of the invention by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a vest in accordance with the present invention, wherein a portable audio instrument is shown in one dot chain line;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the vest;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a shoulder and arm section which can be attached to the vest to form a jacket, wherein the vest is shown by broken lines;
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view of a neck portion of the vest, a part of which is slightly cut to show inside;
Figure 5 is a side view for showing an inside lower portion Qf the vest;
Figure 6 is a section view taken along line 6-6 in
Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is a side view for showing an outside lower portion of the vest, in which a pocket is located outside the vest;
Figure 8 is a front perspective view of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a garment in accordance with the present invention is shown in the form of a vest 10. As shown in Figure 3, a shoulder and arm section 11 may be attached to the vest 10 to form a jacket. For attaching the shoulder and arm section 11 to the vest 10, the vest 10 is provided with five snap fasteners 12 (four are in front as shown in Figure 1, and one is in back as shown in Figure 2). Also, the shoulder and arm section 11 is provided with five snap fasteners 13 corresponding to the snap fasteners 12 of the vest 10. When the fasteners 12 and 13 are engaged together, the vest 10 is converted to a jacket.
The vest 10 comprises a main body portion 14 and a neck portion 15 connected to the main body portion 14. The main body portion 14 is formed of an outer portion 16 and a lining 17 and includes two pockets 18, 19, as clearly explained hereinafter.
The neck portion 15 of the vest 10 comprises inner and outer neck sections 20, 21, which are fastened together by means of a fastener 22. Defined between the inner and outer neck sections 20, 21 is a space 23 for holding speakers 24, which are connected to an audio body, such as a tape recorder 25, by means of a cord 26. In particular, the space 23 is provided therein with seating portions 27 at both ends. Each entrance to a seating portion 27 is slightly smaller than the diameter of the speaker 24, so that the speaker 24 can be inserted into or removed from the seating portion 27 by being firmly pushed. When the speaker is located in the seating portion 27, even if the vest 10 is thrown about, the speaker 24 is securely held in the seating portion 27.
The inner neck section 20 includes a plurality of small openings 28 at both ends, and also the outer neck section 21 includes a plurality of small openings 29 at both ends The small openings 28, 29 are located outside the seating portions 27, so that sound from the speakers 24 can spread outwardly through the small openings 28, 29. The inner neck section 29 is also provided with a through hole 30, through which the cord 26 connected to the speakers 24 in the space 23 extends outwardly from the space 23.
A cord holder 31 in an elongated and cylindrical form is connected to the lining 17 of the vest 10.
The cord holder 31 is situated along a front edge of the vest 10 and extends from near the neck portion 15 to a lower part of the main body portion 14.
As explained above, the vest 10 is provided with the pockets 18, 19. The pocket 18 may be any kind of pocket, but the pocket 19 is designed to hold the tape recorder 25. The pocket 19 is in the form of a pouch and includes a fastener 32 for opening and closing the pocket 19. As clearly shown in Figures 6 and 7, the pocket 19 is formed of two strips 33, 34. The strip 33 is formed of the same fabric as the outer portion 16 of the main body portion 14 and includes a hole 35 and a holding piece 36. An end of the holding piece 36 is connected to the strip 33, and the other end of the holding piece 36 is detachably connected to the strip 33 by means of snap fasteners 37, 38.
Situated near the hole 35 of the pocket 19 is a hole 59 in the lining 17 of the vest 10. The cord 26 extending from the neck portion 15 passes through the cord holder 31 and the holes 35, 39 and enters into the pocket 19.
If the tape recorder 25 to be carried is small enough to be situated in the pocket 19, the pocket 19 should be located between the outer portion 16 and the lining 17 as shown in Figure 6. The cord 26 passing through the cord holder 31 and the holes 35, 39 can be connected to the tape recorder in the pocket 19.
If the tape recorder 25 is big and is unable to be held in the pocket 19, the pocket 19 is taken out of the inside of the vest 10 as shown in Figure 7.
Therefore, the tape recorder 25 can be held by the holding piece 36. The cord 26 passing through the holes 35, 39 can be connected to the tape recorder 25. Since the strip 33 is formed of the same fabric as the outer portion 16, when the pocket 19 is located outside the vest 10, no strange appearance is imparted to the vest 10.
Since all of the audio instrument is held in the vest 10, it is easy to carry the audio instrument and it is not a hindrance for the user. If necessary, the audio instrument can be completely detached from the vest 10.
The cord 26 may be provided with a socket 40 between the audio body 25 and the speakers 24 for the connection of a pair of headphones 41. The socket 40 may be of the type whereby the speakers 24 are electrically disconnected automatically by a switch when the headphones 41 are plugged in or provision may be made for physically disconnecting the cord to the speakers.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 8 the cord holder is formed by a tube 42 in a flap 43 of the jacket made from two -Iayers-43 45- which are fastened together to enclose the tube.
The pocket for holding the audio body 25 may be formed on the inside of the main body 14.
The cord 26 may pass out of the top of the pocket avoiding the need for an additional hole in the pocket
The invention has been explained with reference to a specific embodiment of the invention, but the description is illustrative and the invention is only limited by the appended claims.
