Abstract

Means for fixing a handle to a bag comprises an anchor plate 1 and preferably a support plate 4, the anchor plate being substantially planar and having on one side at least one elongate ridge 1b with a passage 2 extending along the ridge and terminating in a chamber communicating with that side of the plate remote from the ridge. The support plate has a configuration and size substantially coextensive with the anchor plate, and has a plurality of pins 5 extending perpendicularly from one face, at positions corresponding to the positions of apertures 6 in the anchor plate. In use a flexible handle may be inserted through the passage and held captive therein by an enlarged end portion received in the chamber. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Handle fixing device, and handle The present application refers to a device for fixing a handle, and an handle, and more particularly to a handle assembly which can be used in bags or the like.
Hitherto, the most common method of providing a handle for a bag has been to use a strip glued to the material of the bag. Although this is a low cost solution, it is also of short durability since the relatively low strength of the glue, added to the concentration of stress in the bag material, contribute to a short useful life of the handle.
In accordance with the present invention, a handle is fixed to a bag or the like by means of a fixing device comprising an anchoring plate and a support plate, the anchoring plate being substantially planar and having on one side at least one elongate ridge terminating in a chamber communicating with that side of the plate remote from the ridge, the support plate having a configuration and a size substantially coextensive with the anchor plate, the support plate having a plurality of pins extending perpendicularly from one of its faces in positions corresponding to apertures of the anchor plate.
The handle according to another aspect of the invention comprises one or two fixing devices, which are fixed to the extremities of a flexible element, preferably a plastics filament, the extremities of the flexible element entering in respective passages in the anchor plate or plates, passing through the passages and terminating in the chambers, where the extremities of the filament are enlarged so as to prevent their return through the passage.
Preferably, a rigid member is associated with the flexible element at its intermediate portion, to facilitate handling.
One embodiment of the present model will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the fixing device.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line ll-ll of Fig. 1, and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a bag having a handle according to the present model.
As may be seen from the drawings, the fixing device comprises an anchor plate 1 having a plane portion 1a and a ridge 1 b. The ridge extends from the centre of the planar portion 1 to its edge, and includes a passage 2 connecting the end of the ridge with a chamber 3 open in the direction of the face of the plane portion remote from the ridge 1 b.
The fixing assembly further includes a support plate 4, of a size and format substantially similar to the anchor plate.
The anchor and support plates include means for securing them one to another, these means being in this embodiment projections 5 on the support plate which cooperate with openings 6 in the anchor plate 1.
To mount the handle to a bag or the like, the bag is provided with holes corresponding to the projections of the support plate. A flexible element 7, preferably a filament of thermoplastic material, is inserted into the passage 2 of the anchor plate. The extremity of the flexible element is enlarged by any means, preferably heating, to form a "ball" and the flexible element is positioned so that the "ball" is in chamber 3 and the filament extends through passage 2. Both ends of the flexible element are thus fixed in anchor plates.
To fix the handle to a bag, the support plate is positioned within the bag, with the projections extending outwardly through the holes.
The anchor plate is then positioned on the outside of the bag, with the projections 5 of the support plate passing through the openings 6 of the plane portion 1 a. The projections are welded, by ultrasonic means or by heating, to the anchor plate to ensure a resistant fixing of the handle to the bag.
Evidently, it will be possible to use a single anchor plate for each handle, it being sufficient for this anchor plate to have two ridges 1 b to receive the two extremities of the flexible element.
To facilitate handling, a rigid member may be associated with the flexible element, to provide more comfort to the user. In the embodiment shown, the rigid members have a transverse section of "U" form, closed at its extremities, and having downwardly facing openings adjacent to its extremities for the flexible element 7. The flexible element, in the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, extends vertically from the left anchor plate 1, enters the opening in the rigid member 8, passes within the rigid member to the other extremity thereof, and descends to right anchor plate 1, passing through the opening in the second end of rigid member 8.
The rigid member may have other configurations, for example it may be tubular, without departing from the scope of the present invention.
The invention provides a device for fixing a handle, which comprises an anchor plate and a support plate, the anchor plate being substantially planar and having on one side thereof at least one elongate ridge with a passage extending therealong and terminating in a chamber communicating with the side of the plate remote from the ridge, and the device including means to secure the anchor and support plates one to the other.
The invention, also provides an article, for example a bag, which includes a device for fixing a handle, or a handle, in accordance with the invention.
