Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to the storage and application of soft substances The present invention relates to an improved method of and device for storing small quantities of soft substances in a manner enabling subsequent satisfactory application of the soft substance for its intended purpose.
The invention has particular, but not exclusive, application to the storage and application of small quantities of lipstick.
Substances such as lipstick necessarily have to be soft and are therefore stored in an applicator/ holder in stick-like form, the diameter of which is fairly substantial, for example about 1cm, in order to impart sufficient rigidity to the stick to enable its use without the stick bending, breaking or otherwise being deformed.
It is desirable to be able to satisfactorily store and apply smaller than usual quantities of soft substances, such as lipstick, e.g. a quanity sufficient for a single, or small number of applications or for test purposes.
If it is desired to test lipstick in a shop for example, the lipstick has to be applied to the hand rather than to the lips since it is customary to have a normal lipstick as a sample for testing, which is used for anyone who wishes to test the lipstick.
For hygenic reasons it can only be applied to the hand rather than to the lips, which test does not truly represent the actual use conditions.
It would be desirable if a very small quantity of lipstick could be provided in the manner in which it could be applied to the lips of the user, the quantity being sufficient for a single application or a single test. Unfortunately, because of the nature of soft substances such as lipstick, it has hitherto not been possible to satifactorily store in a manner such that it can be applied to soft substances such as lipstick.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new or improved means for storing small quanities of soft substances.
According to one aspect of the present invention, I provide means for storing soft substances comprising an elongated member, carrying at one end thereof a coating of a soft substance, and cover means to effectively enclose said soft substance.
Preferably said cover means co-operates with said elongated member in a manner to prevent contact, when said cover is in a covering position, between said cover and said soft substance.
Preferably, said elongated member comprises a handle part and a support part around which said support part is carried said coating of soft substance.
Preferably said soft substance comprises a lipstick or like material.
Said support part may comprise a spigot-like extension from said handle part and preferably comprises an extension of frusto-conical configuration, decreasing in cross-sectional dimensions in a direction away from the handle portion.
Preferably said cover member is at least partially transparent or translucent to enable the colour and/or nature of the soft substance to be determined whilst the cover is covering said soft substance.
It is another object of the present invention to provide means for coating storage means with soft substances.
According to another aspect of the invention, I provide a method of coating storage means with soft substances comprising the steps of heating said soft substance to a temperature sufficient to enable flow of said soft substance, inserting, at least an end region of an elongated member into said heated soft substance and withdrawing said elongated member, together with a coating of soft substance around said end region and subsequently allowing said soft substance to cool.
Preferably said elongated member comprises a support part extending from a handle part.
Conveniently, said method further comprises the step of securing a cover member to said elongated member or a part depending therefrom or secured thereto, said cover member being preferably so dimensioned that when in a covering position it is spaced from said soft substance.
Preferably said soft substance is lipstick and is heated to a temperature of approximately 70O.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a storage means for a plurality of individual portions of soft substances.
According to this further aspect of the invention, I provide storage means comprising a plurality of discrete elongated members adapted to co-operate with, and be retained by, a retaining means, said elongated members each carrying at one end thereof a soft substance.
Preferably said elongated members each comprise a handle part and a support part extending therefrom.
Preferably said handle part co-operates with said retaining means in a manner to prevent contact between said soft substance and said retaining means, said retaining means conveniently being provided with a cover member effective to surround said soft substance to prevent contact between said soft substance and any external object.
Preferably said retaining means or said cover is provided with a transparent or translucent portion to enable visual inspection of said soft substance while said cover is in a covering position.
Preferably said soft substance is a lipstick or like substance.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of a storage means of the present invention; Figure 2 is a view of the same storage means with a covering of soft substance; Figure 3 is a front elevation of an alternative embodiment of storage means; and Figure 4 is a side elevation of the storage means shown in Figure 3.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, the device comprises an elongated member having a handle part 10 and a support part 11 and an intermediate cover engaging portion 12. The handle part 10 may have any convenient configuration, for example it may be circular in cross-section or may be square or any other convenient shape, the intermediate cover engaging portion 12 is preferably tapered in order to guide the cover into its correct position and so avoid contact between the cover and the soft substance, shown in Figure 2.
The cover 12 is preferably made from a transparent or translucent material and is so dimensioned such that the internal circumference thereof ensures that there is an interference fit between the cover and the part of the cover retaining portion 12.
Referring to Figure 2, the device is shown having a covering of soft substance 14 on the support part 11.
In practice the support part 11 may be covered by soft substance 14 by dipping the support part 11 into a melt of the soft substance, withdrawing the support part from the melt and allowing the soft substance which has adhered thereto to cool.
Once the soft substance 14 has cooled, the cover 13 may be placed in position as shown in Figure 2.
When the covering on the support part 11 is lipstick, the support part ensures that the lipstick is held sufficiently firmly for it to be satisfacrotily applied to the lips even though the covering on the support part may be so thin that, if unsupported in the manner of the present invention, it would be quite unusable.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, an alternative device is shown in which four different soft substances are stored in a single container and held in spaced relationship with each other.
The container comprises a retaining part 20 having four blind bores 21 positioned at spaced intervals therealong, the blind bores 21 being dimensioned such that the handle part 22 of each of the elongated members may be inserted into its respective blind bore 21 and held through interference between the engaging surfaces in such position.
Each of the elongated members 22 comprise a support part 23 having a covering of soft substance 14. The retaining part 20 has connected thereto or formed integrally therewith a back portion 25 at the upper end of which there is provided a hinge formation 26 whereby a transparent or translucent cover portion 27 is pivotally mounted relative to the back portion 25. The cover portion 27 may be provided with any desirable form of clasp means at, for example, its end adjacent the retaining part 20, to ensure that inadvertent opening of the cover 27 does not occur.
In order to use the soft substance on any one of the elongated members, the cover 27 may be opened, the manually engageable part 22 of the device held and pulled away from the retaining part 20.
The soft substance in either of the embodiments shown in the drawings may comprise lipstick, which may be for test purposes in shops so that a customer may try out the lipstick. Since the amount of lipstick on each holding device is small, it is intended for one-time use, thus the problems of hygiene do not occur and the customer may apply the lipstick to her lips, after which the device is discarded or, if desired, may be cleansed and have a new covering of lipstick on the support part 11 and reused.
The device of the present invention is also intended for use as a travelling lipstick and the device shown in Figure 3 is particularly suitable for such purpose whereby different colour lipsticks may be safely stored in the same container and used as required.
