Description

SPECIFICATION A bracket for providing support for one edge of a printed circuit board This invention relates to a bracket for providing support for one edge of a printed circuit board.
Insulation displacement connectors are well known. For some purposes, it is desirable to secure the insulation displacement connectors on edge portions of printed circuit boards. The insulation displacement connectors ideally require that the wire connections thereto should be solderless connections. The solderless connections are relatively easily formed frictiontype connections but relatively considerable pressure is required to make the solderless connections. This pressure can cause deformation and subsequent electrical defects in the printed circuit boards if solderless connections are made to insulation displacement connectors positioned on edge portions of the printed circuit board.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, this invention provides a bracket for providing support for one edge of a printed circuit board, which bracket has first and second portions extending substantially at right angles to one another, the first portion constituting a ledge for receiving the edge of the printed circuit board, the second portion acting both to rigidify the bracket and as an abutment wall against which the edge of the printed circuit board can abut, the second portion having at each of is ends an integrally formed retainer clip, each retainer clip being such that it extends parallel to but spaced apart from the first portion so that each retainer clip can rest on top of the printed circuit board, and each retainer clip being apertured to receive a fastener for fastening the bracket and the printed circuit board together on a mounting chassis.
The bracket may be such that the second portion is longer than the first portion by substantially the combined width of the retainer clips, whereby the first portion is positionable between side parts of the mounting chassis.
The first and second portions and the retainer clips may all be bent from a single strip of material.
The bracket may be made of metal. Various metals may be employed but a presently preferred metal is stainless steel.
The mounting chassis may be a frame defined by elongate side members, the printed circuit board being mounted on the elongate side members. Alternatively, the mounting chassis may be provided with upstanding posts, the printed circuit board being mounted on the upstanding posts.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bracket in use; Figure 2 is an end view of the bracket shown in Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a top view of the bracket shown in Fig. 1; Figure 4 shows the bracket of Fig. 3 looking from left to right in Fig. 3; and Figure 5 is an end view of the bracket shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a bracket 2 for providing support for one edge 4 of a printed circuit board 6. The bracket 2 has a first portion 8 which extends substantially at right angles to a second portion 10.
As shown most clearly in Fig. 2, the first portion 8 constitutes a ledge for receiving the edge 4 of the printed circuit board 6. The second portion 10 acts both to rigidify the bracket 2 and to act as an abutment wall (as illustrated in Fig. 2) against which the edge 4 of the printed circuit board 6 can abut.
The second portion 10 has at each of its ends an integrally formed retainer clip 12.
Each clip 12 is such that it extends parallel to but spaced apart from the first portion 8 so that each retainer clip 12 can rest on top of the printed circuit board 6. Each retainer clip 12 is provided with an aperture 14 for receiving a fastener such as a screw, bolt or rivet for fastening the bracket 2 and the printed circuit board 6 together on side members 16 of a mounting chassis. It will be seen from Figs. 1 and 3 that the second portion 10 is longer than the first portion 8 by substantially the combined width of the retainer clips 12.
In practice the second portion is slightly longer than the first portion by the combined width of the retainer clips 12 plus an extra slot space 18 adjacent each clip 12. the slot spaces 18 being required to facilitate manufacture of the bracket 2. As illustrated in Fig.
1, the precise formation of the brackets 12 enables the brackets 12 to sit above the side members 16 of the mounting chassis whilst the first portion 8 is positioned between the side members 1 6.
In use of the bracket 2, it will provide good support for the edge 4 of the printed circuit board 6. Thus the edge 4 can have any desired number of insulation displacement connectors mounted on it, one such insulation displacement connector being shown as shown connector 20. If solderless wire connections are made in the slots 22 of the connector 20 using a hand tool and relatively considerable pressure, the bracket 2 will be effective to provide adequate support for the edge 4 of the printed circuit board 6 in order to stop the printed circuit board 6 from bending under the pressure and perhaps sustaining permanent damage.
The bracket 2 can very simply be made from a single strip of material bent to the required shape.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the retainer clips 12 can be shaped differently than is shown. Also, the mounting chassis illustrated in Fig. 1 is advantageously known as a card frame suitable for British Telecommunications 62 type practice. Other card frames can however be employed and the side members 16 could in fact be replaced by upstanding posts. Obviously, the other edge 24 of the printed circuit board could be supported by a separate bracket 2 if desired.
