Abstract
215,607. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Winship, E.). June 11, 1923. Non - reactive steering- gear; hydraulic transmission. - Comprises power steering-apparatus in which the hand-wheel shaft is coaxial with the power shaft which operates the steering- gear, the two shafts being each so connected to a valve operating member that their relative movement controls the valve and causes the power shaft to rotate to the same extent as the hand shaft. The hand - wheel shaft 40 is directly connected to the steering-shaft 24 through a lost-motion device comprising pins 77 working in inclined slots 74. When the hand-shaft is rotated, the shaft 24 being held stationary by the steering-gear, a sleeve 73 splined on the hand-shaft is both rotated and moved axially so that a circular rack formed on the sleeve rotates a pinion 62 controlling a four-way distributing valve 49. This valve effects connections between an engine-driven pump 41 and a fluid-pressure motor 11 rotating the steering-shaft 24, so that this shaft follows the movements of the hand-shalt 40, the valve 49 being closed to stop the steering-motor by movements of the pins 77 in the slots 74 when the shaft 24 has caught up to the shaft 40 again. The steering-wheels are operated by screw-andnut-mechanism 31 and arms 35 fixed on a shaft 36, the arms 35 sliding in slots in discs 37 rotatable in the nut 31. The pump 41 is of the gearedwheel type, and the motor 11 is of the rotary vane type.
