Abstract

A pallet stacking frame is provided which comprises a pair of support frames, each engageable with a respective opposite side of the pallet (21) and each having hinged to a vertical edge thereof a gate which may be releasably securable to the free vertical edge of the other frame to form an open- topped stacking frame within which the pallet is held. The arrangement permits one or both of the gates to be opened to provide access to the pallet to load or unload goods. A further feature in that the width of each support frame is equal to or less than the width of the pallet such that adjacent pallets can be stored side-by-side in abutment with each other. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Transport rack This invention relates to a transport rack of the type used in conjunction with a pallet and movable by a fork-lift stack truck.
A known type of transport rack suitable for stacking palletised goods comprises a pair of generally "H" shaped frames which are adapted to lie on opposite sides of a pallet and are releasably securable together by diagonal struts which provide rigidity-for the rack such that successive racks can be stacked one above the other.
A disadvantage of the rack described above is that the presence of the strengthening struts prevent each half of the rack from being stored in a flat position and when connected together prevents free access to goods on the pallet from- the top of the rack.
A further known kind of transport rack comprises a rigid box-like structure which is adapted to fit over the pallet such that the pallet is entirely enclosed within the rack.
Whilst such an arrangement provides for access to the goods on the pallet from the top of the rack it nevertheless has the disadvantage in that the frame of the rack is necessarily wider than the pallet. Thus, unnecessary storage space is used up and such space is at a premium when goods are transported.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a transport rack in which the above disadvantages are obviated and which also provides access to goods on a pallet through an openable side of the rack, without the need to dismantle or remove the remainder of the rack from the pallet.
According to the invention there is provided a rack for a pallet, the rack comprising a pair of support frames, each adapted to hold a respectively opposite side of the pallet, a pair of gates, each hinged to one end of a respective frame and releasably securable at the free end thereof to a complementary end of the other support frame to form an open-topped rack within which the pallet is held between each frame.
Conveniently, at least one of the gates may be opened to provide access to the pallet to load or unload goods. The or each gate may be releasably securable to one end of a complementary support frame by providing complementry hinge tubes on the free end of the gate and the end of the complementary frame and providing a hinge pin to releasably link the hinged tubes together.
Preferably, when the rack is not in use, each gate may be hinged to a respective support frame such that the gate may be closed to lie substantially flat there against such that storage space of the disassembled rack is kept to a minimum.
Each end of each support frame may conveniently incorporate means for receiving the bottom end of a second rack such that one or more racks can be stacked above the first rack.
Preferably, the width of each support frame corresponds to the width of the pallet and this arrangement permits subsequent racks to be stored side-by-side with no wastage of space such that adjacent pallets may lie in abutment with each other.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a support frame of the rack of the present invention, and Figure 2 is a front elevation of a gate of the rack of the present invention, Figure 3 is a perspective view of the frame and gate of Figs. 1 and 2 shown in position adjacent a pallet.
Referring firstly in Fig. 1, there is shown a support frame which comprises a pair of legs 1, to the top end of each of which is secured by welding a top rail 2. A bottom rail 3 is welded between each of the legs 1 at a position slightly above the free ends thereof.
Extending perpendicular to the plane of the frame are a pair of jaws 4, 5, each of which comprises a respective pair of plates 6, 7 and 8, 9 welded to the rail 3. Each jaw 4, 5 is adapted to hold part of a pallet, to be described later with reference to Fig. 3.
At the top end of each leg 1 is welded a hinge tube 1 0a, 1 0b through which a hinge pin (not shown) may be inserted. Similarly, near to the base of each leg 1 is welded a further hinge tube 11 a, 11 b. At each respective end of the top rail 2 is disposed a flanged shoe 12.
Referring now to Fig. 2, there is shown a generally rectilinear gate having a top rail 1 3 and a bottom rail 14 between which is fixed at each end thereof a pair of posts 1 5.
Extending diagonally between the junction of each of the rails 13, 14 and posts 15, are a pair of reinforcing struts 16. Near the top end of each post is fixed a pair of hinge tubes 1 7a, 1 7b and at the bottom end of one of the posts 1 5 there is fixed a further hinge tube 1 8. Near the bottom end of the other post 1 5 is fixed a generally "L" shaped hinge pin 19, the free end of which depends downwardly.
Referring now to Fig. 3 of the drawings there is shown one half of the rack according to the invention which comprises the support frame of Fig. 1 and the gate of Fig. 2 disposed along adjoining sides of a conventional wooden pallet 21. The other half of the rack is symetrical and for convenience is not shown. The pallet 21 comprises a number of laths 22 which are each fixed transversely to a set of three beams 23. The base of the pallet 21 comprises a set of three laths 24 which are also fixed transversely to the beams 23. The space between the laths 22 and 24 and each respective beam 23 affords access for the forks of a stack truck.
In use, the jaws 4, 5 fixed to the bottom rail 3 of each support frame engage an end lath 22 of the pallet 21 such that the bottom rail 3 lies in abutment with the pallet 21. The gate is hinged to the support frame by a pair of hinge pins 25 which extend through the hinge tubes 1 Oa, 11 a in the support frame and the hinge tubes 1 7a, 1 8 of the gate. The gate is thus pivotable about the axis of each hinge pin 25 and can thus be closed against the support frame or opened as desired.
In operation, a pair of complementary support frames are placed on opposite sides of the pallet 21 such that each set of jaws 4, 5 engage respective laths 22. Each support frame carries a hinged gate, the free end of which has an integral hinge pin 1 9 which can be lowered into the vacant hinge tube 11 b of the opposite support frame. The vacant tube 1 7b at the top end of each gate is then in alignment with the vacant hinge tube 1 Ob on the opposite support frame and hinge pins (not shown) can thus be inserted such that each gate is secured to the opposite support frame to form an enclosed rack.
Because each bottom rail 3 of each support frame lies against opposite sides of the pallet 21, the support frame is held against trapezoidal movement and thus does not require additional bracing.
The shoes 1 2 at respective ends of each top rail 2 provide means whereby subsequent racks can be stacked one above the other. The width of each support frame corresponds to the width of the pallet and this enables subsequent racks to be stored side-by-side such that adjacent pallets may be in abutment with each other.

Claims (7)

1. A rack for a pallet, the rack comprising a pair of support frames, each adapted to hold a respectively opposite side of the pallet, a pair of gates, each hinged to one end of a respective support frame and releasably securable at the free end thereof to a complementary end of the other support frame to form an open-topped rack within which the pallet is held between each frame.
2. A rack according to claim 1 in which at least one of the gates is openable to provide access to the pallet to load or unload goods.
3 A rack according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which each gate is releasably securable to one end of a respective support frame by providing complementary hinge tubes on the free end of each gate and the end of each respective frame and providing hinge pins to releasably link the hinge tubes together.
4. A rack according to any preceding claim in which each gate is hinged to a respective support frame such that the gate can be closed to lie substantially flat thereagainst such that storage space of the disassembled rack is kept to a minimum.
5. A rack according to any preceding claim in which each support frame incorporates means for receiving the bottom end of a second rack such that one or more racks can be stacked vertically above a first rack.
6. A rack according to any preceding claim in which the width of each support frame corresponds to the width of the pallet such that a plurality of racks can be stored side-by-side with respectively adjacent pallets lying in abutment with each other.
7. A rack substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompaning drawings.
