Abstract

There is described a hydraulic power pack adapted for fitment in a vehicle trailer and having a valve block 31 which automatically switches hydraulic flow to and from a hydraulic tool in dependence on whether or not the tool is fitted to the valve block. The power pack is provided with a feedback control circuit whereby the speed of the engine 20 is controlled in response to the power demand on the hydraulic circuit. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hydraulic power pack This invention relates to a hydraulic power pack.
More particularly, the invention relates to a trailer hydraulic power pack.
According to the present invention there is provided a hydraulic power pack comprising a framework, an engine mounted on the framework for driving a hydraulic motor, and a valve block for receiving a hydraulic tool connected to an output of said hydraulic motor.
Preferably, said framework forms part of a vehicle trailer.
Preferably also, said valve block automatically switches hydraulic flow to and from the tool in dependence on whether or not a tool is fitted to the valve block.
Preferably also, a feedback control is provided whereby the speed of the engine is controlled in response to the power demand on the hydraulic circuit.
Optionally, electrical power generating means, such as an alternator may be provided.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 a is top plan view of a trailer power pack made in accordance with the present invention and showing the hydraulic circuit; Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the trailer of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the trailer of Fig. 1; Figure 4 is a top plan view of a trailer power pack made in accordance with the present invention and showing rams for engine stop and power-on-demand; Figure 5 is a side elevational view of trailer of Fig. 4; and Figure 6 is an end elevational view of the trailer of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, a trailer hydraulic power pack comprises a chassis framework 10 provided with a pair of road wheels 11 and an adjustable stabiliser wheel 1 2. The trailer is provided with heavy duty suspension for the road wheels 11 together with conventional braking system, lighting system also a tow bar socket 1 3 adapted to engage a towing bar ball of a towing vehicle. Hinged cover panels are fixed to the framework to house the power pack components.
A prime mover in the form of a resiliently mounted diesel engine 20 is mounted on the framework 10 and drives a hydraulic motor 30 through a drive shaft 33 and drives an alternator 40 by means of pulleys 41, 42 and drive belt 43.
Fuel for the engine 20 is stored in a tank 21 mounted in the framework 10 alongside a battery 50 for providing a d.c. supply for starting the engine 20. A supply air duct 14 is mounted on the engine 20 adjacent cowlings in the cover panels.
The hydraulic motor 30 is a direct driven gear pump supplying a tool outlet valve block 31 with hydraulic fluid via a hydraulic line 34. Hydraulic fluid is obtained from an oil supply tank 35 and oil cooler 36 via lines 37 and auxiliary automatic control valve 38. The valve block 31 allows tools to be changed without switching off the power pack, hydraulic flow to and from the tool being automatically switched within the valve block 31.
Thus, flow to and from the tool may be interrupted by disconnection of a dripless quick release coupler connecting the tool to the power pack. Immediately the oil return to the unit is cut the supply to the tool is cut and unloads at tank pressure. Similarly, reconnection automatically reconnects the pressure supply to the tool. On tools which lack a bypass trigger or on/off spool arrangement, e.g. submersible pumps, it may be necessary to press a manual over-ride button momentarily on the block to start the tool.
The engine 20 is provided with a power-on demnad engine speed control which causes the engine to run at full speed whenever a power demand is placed on the hydraulic motor 30 or on the alternator 40. Power-ondemand sensing is achieved by means of a pressure switch 32 operating an electrical solenoid 60 via electrical connector 63 which brings up the engine speed in response to the hydraulic demand. The electrical solenoid 60 acts on the engine throttle thus controlling its speed.
In a modification, the power-on-demand solenoid 60 is replaced by a small hydraulic spring-returned ram which is operated by the circuit pressure. As the circuit pressure increases on demand for hydraulic power the ram is energised and operates the engine speed control, as the pressure falls the ram is returned by the spring dropping engne speed to tickover.
In the event of loss of hydraulic fluid from the supply tank 35 and an electric engine shut-down solenoid 61 is operated to stop the engine 20.
The trailer power pack of the present invention due to its tool changing facility offers improved operator freedom since tool changing may be carried out when desired during the operating cycle of the machine without the need to return and operate any valve levers or controls on the power pack. Also, the speed control feedback means results in energy saving since the engine 20 runs at full speed only when demand for hydraulic or electrical power is made.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the features of the trailer power pack may be incorporated in a portable pack as described in our UK Patent Nos. 1,590,985; 1,590,986 and 1,590,987.
