Abstract

A container comprises a nozzle (8) and a cap (12) to cover the nozzle, the nozzle (8) comprising a tapered outer surface (12') and a parallel-sided inner surface (10) the cap being adapted to be secured over the nozzle (8) by frictional engagement. The cap is provided, extending from an interior side of end face (14) thereof, with two formations (18), each formation (18) comprising a wall surface (19) extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cap, and being curved about the longitudinal axis. When the cap is fitted to the nozzle, the cap engages the nozzle by conventional frictional engagement between the wall (16) of the cap and the surface (12') of the nozzle, and also by frictional engagement between the formations (18) and the interior surface (10) of the nozzle. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to containers This invention is concerned with improvements relating to containers, particularly of the kind (hereinafter referred to as being of the kind specified) comprising a nozzle and a cap to cover the nozzle, the nozzle being of the kind comprising a tapered outer surface and a parallel-sided inner surface, the cap being adapted to be secured over the nozzle by frictional engagement.
More particularly, the invention relates to the provision of a cap for the nozzle of such a container, which may be fitted over the nozzle and retained securely thereon without undue difficulty.
The invention has been devised particularly for a dispenser of the kind adapted to dispense an inhalent to combat an asthmatic attack: it will however be appreciated that the invention is not limited to any particular field of use.
Difficulty has heretofore been encountered in the provision of caps for such nozzles. In general, it is preferred to mould the nozzle and the cap from a convenient plastics material, the tapered outer surface at the nozzle and the parallel-sided inner surface being provided to facilitate the convenient moulding, and easy removal of the mould cores.
Since the cap, and to a lesser extent the nozzle, are capable of resilient deformation, difficulty is encountered in providing a degree of frictional contact between the cap and the nozzle which on the one hand reliably holds the cap on the nozzle, and on the other hand does not cause undue difficulty in the fitting of the cap to the nozzle or the removal of the cap from the nozzle.
According to this invention, there is provided a cap for the nozzle of a container of the kind specified wherein there is provided on the interior of the cap means to frictionally engage the inner surface of the nozzle.
Such engagement, being with the parallel-sided surface of the nozzle, is less subject to forces tending to remove the cap, than conventional arrangements.
Preferably such means acts in conjunction with the conventional gripping engagement between the cap and the outer surfaces of the nozzle. Thus, the leading edge portion at least of the nozzle is gripped between said means and (e.g.) the wall of the cap, rendering the arrangement less subject to problems of resilient deformation. Thus this provision ensures that the cap may be retained in position on the nozzle without either a need for an unduly high clamping force or too high a risk of the cap becoming detached inadvertently from the nozzle.
Preferably, said means is provided by one or more formations extending from the end face of the cap, said or each such formation comprising a wall surface extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cap, each such surface preferably being curved about the longitudinal axis, and a part at least of which being generally complementary to a portion of the inner surface of the nozzle.
According to this invention, there is also provided a container of the kind specified comprising a cap of the kind described above.
There will now be given a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of a container of the kind specified, and a cap therefor, both the container and the cap being embodiments of certain aspects of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the nozzle of the container, showing the cap in position thereon; Figure 2 is an elevation of the interior of the cap; and Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
The container which is the preferred embodiment of this invention is specifically a dispenser for an inhalent drug, comprising a neck 6 which, in use, is held generally vertically, and a nozzle 8 extending from the neck. The nozzle 8 has in conventional manner a parallel-sided inner surface 10, and a tapered outer surface 12. The cap 12 for the nozzle, which is also illustrative of certain aspects of this invention, comprises a base surface 14, and a peripheral wall 16 generally complementary to the surface 12 of the nozzle. However, extending from the base 14 on the interior thereof, spaced from the wall 16, are internal formations 18, 18 adapted to provide gripping engagement with the interior surface 10 of the nozzle, as is shown in Figure 1.
Each formation 18 is in the form of a wall, comprising an engagement surface 19 complementary to a section of the surface 10 of the nozzle, extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis L/A of the nozzle, being curved about said longitudinal axis, being spaced from the inner surface 17 of the cap by a distance generally equal to the thickness of the forward marginal portion of the nozzle, such thickness as will be appreciated increasing in the direction, right to left of Figure 1.
In this manner, the outer edge portion of the nozzle is gripped between the wall 16 and the formations 18, the latter engagement being generally parallel-sided and being less subject to slippage.
Advantageously, the formations 18 are also provided with outer tapered edges to assist in the ready location of the cap on the nozzle.
1. A cap for the nozzle of a container of the kind specified, wherein there is provided on the interior of the cap means frictionally to engage the inner surface of the nozzle.
2. A cap according to Claim 1 wherein such means is adapted to act in conjunction with conventional gripping engagement between the cap and the outer surfaces of the nozzle.
3. A cap according to one of Claims 1 and 2 wherein said means is provided by one or more formations extending from the end face of the cap, said or each such formation comprising a wall sur
