Abstract

A removable container, for insertion into conventional nail clippers to enable the collection of nail clippings, is preferably made of a single piece of springy sheet material, and has top and bottom walls to abut and move with the arms of the clipper, and side wall portions extending from the top and bottom walls and sliding over each other in use of the clipper, the top and bottom walls preferably having open-ended slots enabling the container to engage around the post on the clipper that supports the actuating lever. A blank from which the container can be formed in a single piece is also described. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Nail clippers This invention relates to nail clippers.
The object of the invention is to provide simple means for the collection of nail clippings, in the form of a removable container having top and bottom walls to abut and move with the arms of the clipper, side wall portions extending from the top and bottom walls and sliding over each other in use of the clipper. The top and bottom walls preferably have open-ended slots enabling the container to engage around the post on the clipper that supports the actuating lever.
Conveniently the collector is made of a single piece of springy sheet material such as bronze or beryllium copper, the resilience of the material enabling the top and bottom walls of the container to move with the clipper arms.
Alternative materials such as resilient plastics are also contemplated. Paper can also be used if only a short life is expected e.g. for a throw-away article.
Preferably the collector is held in place on the clippers by its resilience and friction, and the engagement of the post in the slots.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a collector according to the invention in place as a nail clipper, the clipper shown closed; Figure 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but with the clipper shown open; Figure 3 is a plan view of the collector; and Figure 4 is a plan of a blank from which the collector is formed.
Referring to the drawings, the nail clipper of Figs. 1 and 2, shown in chain lines and designated generally 10, has upper and lower arms 11, 1 2 connected at one end 1 3 by means not shown and presenting clipper jaws 14, 1 5 at the other. A post 1 7 extending through the clipper arms 11, 1 2 has an enlargement 1 8 against the lower arm 1 2 and carries a cranked lever 1 9 at its upper end by which pressure is applied to the upper arm 11 to move it against the resilience of the material to the closed position shown in Fig. 1 from the open or rest position shown in Fig.
2. The clipper illustrated is of conventional design.
The collector designated generally 20 is made from a single sheet of beryllium copper blanked out as shown at B in Fig. 4. The collector 20 is formed with upper and lower walls 21, 22 and side all portions 24, 25 and 26, 27 extending from the upper and lower walls 11, 1 2 respectively. These side wall portions are marked on the blank B although not yet in their final form. Side wall portions 24, 25 are slightly offset to the outside of wall portions 26, 27 so that in the completed collector the wall portions 24, 25 embrace the wall portions 26, 27 and slide over them as the arms 11, 1 2 of the clipper move between open and closed positions. The side wall portions 25, 27 on one side and 24, 26 on the other co-operate to form the side walls of the collector. They preferably do not touch but are close enough to prevent clippings falling out.
The upper and lower walls 21, 22 have open slots 30, 31 at their ends to engage round the post 1 7. The side wall portions 24, 25; 26, 27 have forward projections 33, 34; 35, 36 fitting approximately to the inside contour of the clipper jaws 14, 1 5.
When the blank B of Fig. 4 is folded to the form shown in the other figures, the closed end 38 of the collector is formed by pressing together the middle section. The resilience of the metal is such however that the upper and lower walls 21, 22 tend to spring open. Thus they are able to foliow the movements of the clipper arms 11, 1 2 in use of the clipper 10.
Nail clippings are thus trapped within the collector 20.
The collector 20 is easily removed from and assembled with the clipper 10 by compressing the arms 21, 22 and turning them on the post 1 7 as pivot. With the end 38 outside the clipper 10 the collector can be withdrawn: or, for assembly, the collector can be pushed on to the post 1 7 with the latter engaged in the slots 30, 31 and then turned to fit within the clipper. In use the collector is held in place by resilience and friction, and the engagement of the post in the slots.
1. For use with a nail clipper having a pair of arms carrying clipper jaws, a post and an actuating lever supported thereon to close the jaws against spring force tending to open them: a collector for nail clippings, in the form of a removable container for location between the arms of the clipper, the container having top and bottom walls to abut and move with the arms of the clipper, side wall portions extending from the top and bottom walls and sliding over each other in use of the clipper.
2. A collector as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the top and bottom walls have openended slots enabling the container to engage around the post on the clipper that supports the actuating lever.
3. A collector as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the collector is made of a single piece of springy sheet material the resilience of the material enabling the top and bottom walls of the container to move with the clipper arms.
4. A collector as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the container is made of beryllium copper.
5. A collector as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the container is made of paper.
