Abstract
A bulkhead light fitting such as may be used on the exterior of buildings has a housing 10 which is formed in its base with a plurality of integrally formed sockets 16 and 17 which project outwardly from the housing and which each have a closed outer end. Said sockets 16 and 17 are adapted for use in securing brackets 13 and 14 within the housing by means of self-tapping screws (See Fig. 2) which engage the interiors of the sockets. Each bracket is used to support one or more lamps within the housing 10. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Bulkhead light fitting
This invention relates to a bulkhead light fitting of the kind which includes a housing in which is provided means for mounting a lamp or lamps and means for making the necessary electrical connections to said lamp or lamps, together with a transparent or translucent cover or lid which is releasably secured to the housing. Such a light fitting is intended for use in porches or in other places on the exteriors of buildings and accordingly will be exposed in use to the weather. It is therefore important not only that the fitting should be corrosion-resistant but also that it should prevent or resist the ingress of water or moisture to its interior. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved light fitting which achieves the above-mentioned dessider- ata.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a bulkhead light fitting of the kind specified wherein the housing and the cover are each formed of a corrosion-resistant material and wherein the base of the housing is provided with a plurality of outwardly projecting sockets which each have a closed outer end which is integrally connected to a generally cylindrical wall which is itself integrally connected to the adjoining portion of the housing base.
Each of the aforesaid integrally formed sockets is adapted to receive the screwed end of a self-tapping screw which is disposed within the housing and which is used to secure a bracket or other component within the housing. Conveniently, said housing is formed of metal and preferably of aluminium or an aluminium alloy. the aforementioned sockets then being formed by a drawing process.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one example of a bulkhead light fitting in accordance with the invention and,
Figure 2 is a scrap sectional view (drawn on an enlarged scale as compared with Fig. 1) showing in detail one of the sockets which are formed in the housing of the light fitting.
Referring now to the drawing the bulkhead light fitting shown therein is provided with a housing 10 together with a transparent or translucent cover or lid 11 which may be made from glass or synthetic resin material and which is releasably connected to the housing 10 by means of screws (not shown) which extend through the top of said cover or lid 11. A rubber gasket (not shown) is mounted on the rim of the cover or lid 11 adjacent to the upper or open side of the housing 10 which is formed with an outwardly directed flange 1 2 forming a seating for the lid or cover 11, said gasket providing a weatherproof seal for the joint between the housing and the cover or lid.
Within said housing 10 is mounted a lamp or lamps together with means for making the desired electrical connections to said lamp or lamps. The lamps themselves and said means for making the electrical connections are not shown in the drawing but they may be of any conventional form. Conveniently however the housing is provided with a pair of brackets indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 1 by reference numerals 1 3 and 14 said brackets being used to support the lamp or lamps within the housing. Each of said brackets is secured in position by means of a pair of screws which are connected to the base portion 1 5 of the housing.Hitherto, in one known form of construction, said base portion 1 5 of the housing is formed with a plurality of screw-threaded holes with which the bracket screws are engaged but the existence of such holes offers points of entry for water or moisture which can lead not only to corrosion of the screws themselves but also to deterioration in the condition of other components within the housing.
In accordance with the present invention therefore the base portion 1 5 of the housing is provided with a plurality of outwardly projecting sockets such as are indicated by reference numerals 1 6 and 1 7 and in one convenient arrangement (which is not to be taken in any limiting sense) each of said brackets 1 3 and 1 4 is secured by two screws which enter respectively into a pair of sockets such as sockets 1 6 which are spaced apart across the width of the housing 1 0.
Each of said socket 1 6 and 1 7 is formed so that it has a closed outer end 1 8 which is integrally connected to a generally cylindrical wall 1 9 which is itself integrally connected to the adjoining part of the base portion 1 5 of the housing. Thus in one convenient arrangement the housing 10 is formed from a metal such as aluminium or an aluminium alloy and the aforesaid sockets 1 6 and 1 7 are produced by a drawing process which results eventually in the formation of the above described integrally formed cylindrical sockets. The internal diameter of each of said cylindrical sockets is slightly less than the overall diameter of the thread of the associated bracket fixing screws which are of the self tapping variety so that the brackets can be secured by using these screws to form a tapped hole in each of the corresponding sockets as the screws are driven home.
The above described construction thus provides a housing which does not have any open screw holes for fixing components within the housing and the ingress of water which might otherwise occur through such open screw holes is therefore prevented.
Claims (4)
1. A bulkhead light fitting of the kind specified wherein the housing and the cover are each formed of a corrosion-resistant material and wherein the base of the housing is provided with a plurality of outwardly project- ing sockets which each have a closed outer end which is integrally connected to a generally cylindrical wall which is itself integrally connected to the adjoining portion of the housing base.
2. A bulkhead light fitting as claimed in
Claim 1 wherein the housing is formed of metal which is subjected to a drawing process to form said sockets.
3. A bulkhead light fitting as claimed in
Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein there is provided within the housing lamp supporting bracket means which are secured to the base of the housing by means of self-tapping screws which are engaged with the interiors of said sockets.
4. A bulkhead light fitting of the kind specified and substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
