Abstract
A sheet material for use in making orthopaedic devices, such as collars, splints, leg supports, and insoles, has a substrate of thermosoftening plastics material e.g. polyethylene foam bonded on one side to a cushioning layer of soft air-permeable material e.g. a pile fabric and on the other side to an attachment layer comprising a multiplicity of fine loops or hooks.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Orthopaedic devices
This invention relates to material for use in orthopaedics and to orthopaedic devices utilizing such material.
The invention provides a sheet material comprising a substrate of thermosoftening plastics material bonded on one side to a cushioning layer of soft air-permeable material and on the other side to an attachment layer comprising a multiplicity of fine loops or hooks.
The substrate preferably comprises an expanded plastics material of closed-cell structure. A preferred material is an expanded cross-linked polyethylene, such as that produced under the trade mark "FRELEN" in
Germany. Such polyethylenes have a softening point in the region of 140"C, which is convenient for use orthopaedics.
The cushioning layer may be woven or nonwoven material, e.g. pile fabric such as terry or brushed nylon. Preferably, the cushioning layer is absorbent so as to enhance comfort in contact with the skin. For the same reason, the substrate may have perforations or slits.
the attachment layer is preferably of "Velcro" loop material ("VELCRO" being a registered trade mark).
The sheet material may be supplied in rolls of indefinite length from which desired shapes can be stamped for moulding (when heated to the softening point of the plates material) to form orthopaedic devices or parts of orthopaedic devices, such as collars, splints, leg supports, and insoles. The cushioning layer can be placed next to the patient's skin and auxiliary elements such as mechanical correction and supporting devices can be attached to the attachment layer by providing the auxiliary elements with hooks or loops which cooperate with the loops or hooks of the attachment layer. Such elements may be of plastics, metal, or carbon fibre material of example.
For instance, a leg may be encased in the region of the knee with an accurately matching part moulded from the sheet material. An exoskeletal system can then be connected to the leg by straps having hooks or hoops cooperating with the atachment layer. In this way a patient can be fitted rapidly and easily.
Furthermore, subsequent adjustment of the system is also easy.
As another example, insoles can be cut to shape from the sheet material and pads for pressure relief can be attached at required positions. Such pads can easily be removed, replaced, or re-positioned if subsequent adjustment becomes necessary. The insoles may be used with the cushioning layer below or above, as required.
Claims (5)
1. A sheet material comprising a substrate of thermosoftening plastics material bonded on one side to a cushioning layer of soft airpermeable material and on the other side to an attachment layer comprising a multiplicity of fine loops or hooks.
2. A sheet material as claimed in claim 1, in which the substrate comprises an expanded plastics material of closed-cell structure.
3. A sheet material as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the substrate has perforations or slits.
4. A sheet material as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the cushioning layer is a pile fabric.
5. An orthopaedic device comprising a sheet material according to any preceding claim.
