Abstract

A plastics material sill comprises a channel member 2 with an integrally formed flexible sealing member 8 detachably connected to the channel to sealingly engage with the underside of a door, the channel member having a retaining formation 18 for retaining a replacement blade. The channel 6 may be drained through drilled holes or through- ducts in end closure members. The channel member may be hingedly attached to a base member to snap fit over fixing means which are thus concealed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Plastics sill member This invention relates to a plastics sill mill suitable forweather-proofing doors and the like.
A sill of metal is already known from UK Patent 1 1 56965 wh ich com prises an elongate channel member having an upstanding outer leg for engagement with the edge of a door in the closed position above the channel and on the opposite side of the channel from the outer leg there is provided an elongate cavity to retain a replaceable flexible sealing memberto sealingly engage the bottom edge of the door.
Separate manufacture and subsequent assembly of the sill and sealing member are necessary.
This invention consists in a plastics sill as claimed in Claim 1 hereof.
The provision of an integrally formed sealing member enables a finished sill productto be manufactured in one step. In addition, the sill is provided with a retaining formation for retaining a replaceable sealing member. The retaining formation is preferably in the form of an elongate cavity.
To facilitate the removal of the integrally formed sealing memberaftera period of use it may be connected to the channel member by means of at least one integral web of plastics material which can readily be parted to releasetheworn sealing member.
It is preferred, however, that the sealing member is detachably connected to the channel member by means of an integral web formed along each longitudinal side of the sealing member.
A particularly advantageous form is obtained when the integrallyformed sealing member is arranged to bridge a retaining formation in the form on an elongate cavity. In this arrangement the formation of integral webs connecting the sealing memberto the channel memberisfacilitated. Inaddition,theentr- ance to the elongate cavity is closed by the sealing member which prevents the ingress of soil into the cavity which otherwise mayobstructthe insertion of a replacement sealing membertherein.
The channel member may be adapted to be mounted on a base member by the resilient interengagement of complimentary formations provided on the channel member and on the base member. With this arrangement, a more rigid plastics sill is possible.
In addition, the base member may befixed tothe threshold of a doororthe like, the fixings being concealed when the channel member is mounted on the base member.
In a preferred form the channel member is hingedly connected to the base member, for instance by means of a bead or strip offlexible material, whereby the complimentary formations may be interengaged by a pivotal movement ofthe channel member relative to the base member.
The channel, which collects anywater penetrating between the upstanding outer leg ofthe sill and the lower outer edge ofthe door, can be drained by providing one or more borings communicating the channel with the exterior side ofthe sill. It is preferred, however, to provide an end closure memberto interfit with each end of the channel member, at least one of these end closure members being moulded to provide a channel drainage duct. Separate machine operations, to provide drainage ducts, are thereby obviated.
Different types of plastics material may be employedto producethechannel memberandthe integral sealing member respectively. A sill as claimed in any claim 1 to 5 hereof may be produced by co-extruding a relatively rigid plastics material to form the elongate channel membertogetherwith a relative lyflexible plastics material to provide the integrally formed flexible plastics sealing member.
Two embodiments of the inventnion will be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure lisa part cross sectional drawing of a first form of plastics sill; Figure 2 is an enlarged detail ofthe sill shown in Figure 1.
Figures 3,4 and 5 are, respectively, a partial side elevation, front elevation and plan of one end closure member for use with the sill illustrated in Figure 1, and Figure 6 is a cross sectional drawing of a second form of plastics sill.
Referring to Figure la a plastics sill for a door comprises an elongate rigid PVC extruded channel member 2 having an upstanding outer leg 4 for engagement with the edge of a door (indicated in outline) in the closed position above the channel 6. On the opposite side of channel 6from the leg 4, a flexible PVC sealing member 8 is detachably connected to the channel member 2 by means of the relatively thin integral webs 10,12 as shown more clearly in Figure 2.
The channel member 2 is provided with a longitudinally extending cavity 18 having a narrower entrance portion 1 5 which is bridged by the base ofthe detachable sealing member8 and bythewebs 10,12 which integrally connectthe detachable sealing member 8to the opposite side portions 14,16 of the entrance portion 15.
Referring to Figures 3,4 and 5 an end closure in the form of a plastics moulding 20 is formed with a recess 22 adapted to interfittingly received an end of the channel member 2, the boss 24 being received in the mouth ofthe channel.
The moulding 20 is formed with an angled drain duct 26 which falls from the lower portion of boss 24 towards the outer face 28 ofthe moulding 20. A moulding, not shown, of the opposite hand is provided to close the other end of the channel member 2.
A moulded screw port 30 is provided in each moulding to facilitate fixing of the assembled sill between the door jambs. When necessarythe detachable sealing member 8 may be stripped from the channel member 2to reveal the entrance 15 of the cavity 18 into which a flexible replacement sealing member may be inserted.
Referring to Figure 6 a secondform of sill is shown comprising an extruded PVC channel member40 formed with a longitudinally extending cavity 42 the The drawing(s) originally filed were informal and the print here reproduced is taken from a later filed formal copy.
entranceto which is bridged bythe base ofthe integral sealing member44 in the same manner as described with reference to Figure 1.
The inner leg 46 ofthe channel member 40 is hingedly attached to a base member48 by means of a bead of flexible material 50 bonded between mitred end portions of the leg 46and base member48.
With the complimentary formations 52,54 disengaged, the channel member 40 may be pivoted clockwise, viewed from Figure 6, about the hinge 50 and fixings may be inserted through apertures 56 provided in the base member48to secure the assemblytothethreshold of a doororthe like.
Subsequently, the channel member may be rotated anti-clockwise until the complimentaryformations 52, 54 are interengaged after resilient deformation to securely attach channel member 40 to the base member48 concealing the fixings in the cavity there-between.
