Abstract
The invention concerns material for an elastomeric sealing gasket for use in aerosol containers which contain products including at least one solvent of the group comprising water, methylene chloride, butane, propane and a propellant constituted at least partially by dimethylether. The material is constituted at least partly by a modified or unmodified butyl rubber vulcanised by an oxidant which is not sulphurised and in the absence of free chlorine.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Gaskets for use in pressurised dispensers
In gaskets made of rubber or rubber-like elastomeric materials and used in small hand-held dispensers of the kind commonly known as aerosols" (although they may well dispense products in a form other than an aerosol, e.g. a foam), it is a matter of importance to ensure that the material chosen for the gasket is compatible with the constituents of the mixture within the container. This is particularly true of the disc-like gasket used as the sealing surface against which the valve member engages.
Certain materials dispensed from pressurised containers include dimethylether, which has a marked tendency to attack the material of the gasket, not only damaging the gasket but also leading to resulting reaction products which attack and cause corrosion of the walls of the container.
The dimethylether extracts from the gasket the sulphurised and chlorinated components which, in aqueous solution, then attack the metal of the adjacent valve mounting cup, and possibly of the container itself. This attack manifests itself particularly in the region where the gasket is in contact with the inside of the mounting cup. The sulphur compositions are derived from the vulcanising agents present, whereas the chlorine is present as an integral part of the elastomer, for example chloroprene.
Attempts have been made to neutralise the free chlorine ions by the introduction of an excess of magnesium, and to replace the traditional sulphur-containing vulcanising agents with alternatives that are free of sulphur. These known solutions to the problem do restrict the degree of attack by the dimethylether, although without being totally effective.
Another drawback of the presence of dimethylether in the product is its tendency to diffuse through the normal kinds of gasket, resulting in a significant loss of weight over a long period of time.
The aim of the invention is to provide a gasket which is resistant to product mixtures that include dimethylether in conjunction with solvents such as water, methylene chloride, and hydrocarbons, and which presents a very low coefficient of extraction in relation to dimethylether and a coefficient of permeability to dimethylether which is significantly below that of the gaskets which are conventionally used in pressurised dispensing containers.
According to the invention an elastomeric gasket material for use in pressurised dispensers containing at least one solvent of the group comprising water, methylene chloride, butane, and propane, and having a propellant constituted at least partially by dimethylether is characterised by being constituted at least partly by a modified or unmodified butyl rubber vulcanised by an oxidant which is unsulphurised in the absence of free chlorine.
Such a gasket material could be constituted at least partially by a copolymer of butyl and isoprene.
Gaskets made of this material could contain at least one substance of the group comprising zinc oxide, stearic acid, carbon black, kaolin, paraffin, phenolic and phenol-formaldehyde resins, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, polyethylene, styrene-butadiene and chlorobutyl.
They could equally well be constituted, at least partly, by a copolymer of butyl and chloroisoprene, and could include magnesium in a quantity at least equal to that necessary to neutralise the available chlorine in the gasket.
The mechanical properties of the rubber-butyl based elastomer are reinforced by copolymerisation with isoprene or chloroisoprene. This co-polymerisation significantly reduces the reactivity of the free chlorine in the case of chloroisoprene. The complimentary addition of magnesium furthermore allows neutralisation of the excess chlorine on top of its vulcanising action.
The permeability of the butyl rubbers modified in this way is very low, such as to justify their use in membranes for pneumatic containers for air.
The elastomeric gaskets according to the invention allow the production of valve assemblies of which the metallic mounting cup adapted to fit the neck of the container does not need any protection by varnish or lacquer apart from that used to counter any aggressivity of the product to be dispensed.
The invention will be better understood by reading the following description of several embodiments of the invention by way of example.
To produce gaskets according to the invention for aerosol valves with no free chlorine and no available sulphur, for containing dimethylether, one prepares a mixture of elastomers comprising predominantly 100 parts of butyl rubber, 1.5 of stearic acid, 5 parts of zinc oxide, 50 parts of carbon black, 10 parts of calcined kaolin, 7.5 parts of paraffin oil and 7 parts of active phenolic resin.
The above composition is mixed, shaped and vulcanised in accordance with the normal rules in this art, before being cut into gaskets of the required dimensions.
One can use such gaskets, without any particular precautions, and with excellent results, for ensuring the effective sealing of aerosols containing the following formulations: 1. Absolute ethyl alcohol 10%
Methylene chloride 15% 80/20 Butane-propane 10%
Dimethylether 65% 2. Absolute ethyl alcohol 30%
