Abstract
214,739. Peters & Co., Ltd., G. D., and Cross, J. W. Jan. 29, 1923. Fluid-pressure.-Relates to apparatus, particularly for automobiles, of the kind in which the brake cylinder or equivalent is in free communication with the discharge side of a pump adapted to circulate liquid past a valve the spring loading of which can be varied to determine the pressure established in the brake cylinder. The invention consists chiefly in the provision of a screw-threaded member which can be turned by a handle for adjusting the spring-loading of the control valve. The pump 2 which may be driven from the engine crank shaft circulates oil or other liquid from a reservoir 1 through a pipe 5. the casing 4 of the driver's control valve 13 and a pipe 6. A pipe 7 leads from the casing 4 to the brake cylinder or as shown the diaphragm chamber 8 the piston or diaphragm rod 9 being connected to a rock shaft 11. A loading spring 14 is interposed between the valve 13 and a screw-threaded member 16 working in the casing 4 and operable by a hand lever 15. By turning the member 16 the load of the spring 14 on the valve 13 and thus the pressure established by the pump in the chamber 8 can be regulated. Means may be provided for limiting the load which can be put upon the valve 13 so as to avoid' skidding of the wheels. Toothed gearing may be interposed between the operating handle of the valve and the member 16 in such a manner that the movement of the handle may be limited to an arc of a circle, indications being provided as to the braking pressure corresponding to various positions of the handle. The gearing may comprise a pinion on the screwed spindle 16, engaged by an arc. shaped rack carried by a vertical hand-lever of the usual kind, or the pinion may be engaged by a straight sliding rack with a handle. To prevent release of the brakes in the event of stoppage of the pump, a non-return valve may be disposed in the lower part of the casing 4 to prevent back flow through the pipe 5. The brakes may be arranged for application by a spring and be held off by the fluid pressure, such an arrangement is particularly suitable for brakes on trailer vehicles as enabling an automatic application of the brakes to be effected by the breakage of a coupling between the vehicles.
