Abstract

A fabric comprises at least one waterproof layer, for example PVC sheet, at least one insulating layer, for example an open celled polyurethane foam, and at least one internal face layer, which is preferably a permeable polyurethane film. The fabric has improved heat insulation and anti-condensation properties and is suitable for use in tents, awnings, and mobile homes of various types.

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved Camper This invention relates to campers, which term is to be taken to include mobile campers, tents, trailer tents, caravans and awnings, and boats, or other forms of mobile accommodation having part or all of their external walls or roofs of flexible material, and in particular relates to an improved flexible material for such walls or roofs.
Mobile campers are essentially motor vans having the van portion fitted with cookers, beds, and the like to provide living accommodation. Since the head room in a van is normally limited mobile campers generally have roofs which open upwards to give sufficient head room for an adult to stand up. Such roofs are usually provided with a fabric skirt to seal the open roof space from the elements. The fabric used for such a roof skirt is commonly a flexible PVC material. While this is weather proof, it does suffer from the draw back that, during the night, condensation tends to form on the inside of the fabric portion which drips into the interior of the camper.
The invention seeks to provide an improved form of weather proof flexible fabric in which the problem of condensation is reduced or eliminated.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a camper as hereinbefore defined having a wall or roof portion formed from a fabric which comprises at least one waterproof layer, at least one insulating layer, and an internal face layer.
The weather proof layer is preferably the external face layer or outer skin and may in fact comprise any of the fabrics currently used for wall or roof portions in campers, for example PVC, canvas, nylon, polypropylene, or the like. Preferably, the outer skin is a PVC sheet.
The insulating layer is preferably a foamed plastics material and more preferably is an open celled foam, and may be a polyether, polyurethane or other known type. If desired, the material chosen may be flame resistant.
The inner face protects the insulating material and may advantageously comprise a film of polyurethane or other flexible material. Preferably the inner face is permeable allowing the foam layer to breathe'.
It has been found that a camper having a fabric wall or roof in accordance with the present invention not only has improved resistance to condensation but has better heat retention and improved noise insulation in comparison with conventional fabrics. The fabric may be used as the skirt on a lift up roof on a mobile camper, for the roof, wall, or both, of tents, for the flexible fabric parts of trailer tents and caravan awnings, or for boat hoods. The fabric is flexible and will therefore foid away, is weatherproof, and has improved anti-condenasation and insulation characteristics compared to conventional fabrics used for these purposes.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the sole figure is a partial sectional view of a fabric constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing, it can be seen that the fabric comprises a laminate of three layers the outer skin or weatherproof layer 10 comprising a PVC sheet of material, the central portion or insulating layer 12 comprising an open celled polyether foam, and the inner face comprising a porous polyurethane film 14. The outer face 10 may carry a suitable colouring and/or decoration, as may the inner film 14. The fabric may be made up in exactly the same way as conventional fabrics and may therefore be used as a direct replacement.
1. A camper as hereinbefore defined having a wall or roof portion formed from a fabric which comprises at least one waterproof layer, at least one insulating layer, and an internal face layer.
2. A camper as claimed in Claim 1 in which the weatherproof layer is an external face layer of the fabric.
3. A camper as claimed in Claim 2 in which the external face layer is a PVC sheet.
4. A camper as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 3 in which the insulating layer is a foamed plastics material.
5. A camper as claimed in Claim 4 in which the foamed plastics material is an open cell foam.
6. A camper as claimed in either of Claims 4 or 5 in which the foam is flame retardant.
7. A camper as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 6 in which the inner face comprises a film of polyurethane material.
8. A camper as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 7 in which the internal face layer is permeable.
9. A camper substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
