Abstract

214,712. Hilger, Ltd., A., and Ord, P. R. Jan. 23, 1923. Polarizing - apparatus.- Polarimetric apparatus for measuring the rotation of the plane of polarization of a substance is constructed so that the analyser, of the kind dividing the field into two parts, has its dividing line at the focus of the eyepiece, the position being unaffected by the introduction into the apparatus of the substance to be tested. Rays of light from a source a are rendered parallel by a lens b and pass through a filter c of potassium bichromate to a Nicol prism d and from thence through the tube f containing the liquid to be examined. At the eyepiece end of the instrument are situated two Nicol prisms h, which may be adjusted as described in Specification 166,842, and two inclined plates i, all mounted in the casing k. The prisms h and plates i are adjusted so that a sharp dividing line is maintained at the focus of the eyepiece j. A screw l is fitted for rotating the prisms h to set the zero position of the scale m which is provided with a vernier n and viewed through a lens o. Reflectors p are fitted for the illumination of the scale m. In use the polarizer d is rotated and the analyzer is stationary.
