Abstract

An illumination box (1) has a transparent screen (4,5) of plastics material or diffused glass. First and second D.C. light bulbs (6,7) held by snap-action in terminals (8) underneath the screen (4) serve to illuminate the screen (4) from behind and a third D.C. light bulb (9) held by snap-action by terminals (10) serves to illuminate the screen (5). With the box 1 fitted to a cash register having a cash till and with the light bulbs (6,7,9) illuminated, then water marks, for example, in a bank note, may be identified by laying the bank note over the screen (4) for the bank note to be illuminated from behind for the purpose of detecting forgeries. The screens may be built-in either to a sloping, vertical or flat surface of the cash register. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Detecting water marks or the like in paper documents The present invention relates to detecting water marks or the like in paper documents, such as bank notes or tickets, at apparatus where paper docments are handled, such as a cash register or a turnstile.
According to the present invention, there is provided apparatus where paper documents are handled, which apparatus is additionally provided with a screen behind which is illuminating means and on which screen a paper document may be laid to be illuminated from behind by the illuminating means.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an illumination box for fitting to an existing cash register or turnstile for example; Figure 2 shows the box fitted to a cash register; and Figures 3 and 4 show cash registers with built-in illuminating means.
Referring to Figure 1, an illumination box 1 comprises a casing of plastics material comprising two fitted-together parts 2 and 3; a transparent screen 4 of plastics material; a transparent screen 5 of plastics material; first and second D.C. light bulbs 6 and 7 held by snap-action in terminals 8 underneath the screen 4; and a third D.C. light bulb 9 held by snap-action by terminals 10 under the screen 4 and behind the screen 5. The casing has a socket 11 for receiving a jack plug for applying D.C. voltage from a suitable source such as a mains transformer and rectifier unit, the internal wiring of the casing being such that operation of a microswitch 1 2 causes the light bulbs 6 and 7 to be illuminated by such a D.C. voltage. As a safety measure in the event of a power failure, there is provided in the casing within a portion 1 3 thereof, batteries which may be used to illuminate the light bulb 9 by operation of a further switch 1 4 (which could also be a micro-switch like the switch 12). As well as providing illumination from under the screen 4, the bulb 9 also enables illumination through the screen 5 into a cash till, for example, via the screen 5 and a suitable reflector could be provided to enhance this effect. The arrangement could be such that the batteries are kept charged via the D.C. voltage applied by the socket 11.
Also, the switch 1 2 could be omitted, the arangement being such that the light bulbs 6 and 7 are permanently on. The external di mensions of the box 1 are approximately 1 25mm by 62mm by 30mm. The screens 4 and 5 could instead be of diffused glass.
Figure 2 shows the box 1 fitted to a cash register 1 5 having a cash till 1 6. With the light bulbs 6 and 7 (or 9) illuminated, then water marks, for example, in a bank note, for example, may be identified by laying the bank note over the screen 4 for the bank note to be illuminated from behind for the purpose of detecting forgeries. Figure 3 shows a modification where the screen 4 with light bulbs 6 and 7 (not shown) behind it is built-in either to a sloping or vertical surface of the cash register 1 5. Reference numerals 1 7 and 1 8 denote upright posts behind which a bank note or the like may be slipped.Figure 4 shows an alternative to the alternatives of Figure 3 in which the screen 4 is built-in to a flat surface of the cash register 1 5. Again, in the embodiments of Figures 3 and 4, the screen 4 could be a diffused glass screen and the switch 1 2 could be omitted, the light bulbs 6 and 7 being permanently on.
1. Apparatus where paper documents are handled, which apparatus is additionally provided with a screen behind which is illuminating means and on which screen a paper document may be laid to be illuminated from behind by the illuminating means.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, which comprises a housing which has one surface provided with said screen and another surface provided with a further screen, the illuminating means being disposed in the housing, there being a further illuminating means disposed in the housing behind the further screen.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2, in which the housing is formed by two parts made of a plastics material.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, which comprises a cash register, the screen being provided in a surface of the cash register.
5. Apparatus where paper docm ents are handled substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, Figures 1 and 2, Figure 3 or Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings.
