Abstract
A hospital bed having a mattress platform supported by a frame (18) which is so mounted on the bed that raising of a pivotally-mounted backrest portion (14) of the platform causes the frame (18) to be tilted into a "feet-up" position so that it lies at an angle of between 1 DEG and 10 DEG to the horizontal. The backrest portion (14) is pivoted (16) to frame (18) and pivoted (46) to girders (48) forming part of a height adjustable scissor linkage structure (20) mounting the frame (18), such that raising of backrest portion (14) causes parts (48,50,34,52) of the structure (20) to be displaced so that the frame (18) is tilted up. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Hospital bed
This invention relates to hospital beds of the kind having mattress platforms.
The mattress platforms of such beds are usually supported by a strong rectangular metal frame which, in certain cases, is mounted on a support structure of, say, scissor-like construction to permit the mattress frame to be raised or lowered hydraulically.
It has been proposed in beds of this construction for a part of the mattress platform adjacent the head of the bed to be pivotally mounted so that it can be swung upwards into a position where it serves as a backrest. It is not, however, good medical practice for the remainder of the mattress platform to remain horizontal when the backrest portion of the platform is thus raised. In fact, the best medical opinion is that the remainder of the mattress platform should be set at an angle of about 4 degrees to the horizontal when the backrest portion of the platform is raised.
Such, however, is the pressure on nursing staff in an average hospital that adjustment of the main portion of the mattress platform to an angle of 4 degrees to the horizontal is frequently overlooked.
The aim of the present invention is to provide means whereby the frame surrounding and supporting the mattress platform is automatically raised into a "feet-up" position when the backrest portion of the platform is raised, and according to the invention the backrest portion is mechanically linked to the support structure for the said frame in such a way that raising of the backrest causes the frame surrounding the mattress platform to be tilted into a "feet-up" position so that it lies at a small angle to the horizontal-preferably an angle of substantially 4 degrees.
An example of a hospital bed in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view from above of the mattress platform and its supporting frame;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing part of the mattress platform in a raised position whereby it serves as a backrest;
Figure 3 is a side view of the entire bed with the backrest portion of the mattress platform raised as in Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged portion of part of
Fig. 3.
Hospital beds frequently comprise a onepiece mattress platform which is bounded and supported by a rectangular metal frame. In the case of the bed shown in the drawings, however, the mattress platform 10 comprises a main portion 1 2 and a secondary portion 1 4 which is pivotally mounted at 1 6 on the supporting frame 1 8 so that it can be swung upwards out of the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 into the inclined position shown in
Fig. 3 where it serves as a backrest. Further, in accordance with best medical opinion, the frame 1 8 is so mounted on the bed that raising of the backrest portion 14 of the platform 10 causes the frame to be tilted into a "feet-up" position so that it lies at a small angle a to the horizontal.Preferably this angle is substantially 4" when the backrest portion 14 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, but in practice it can be anywhere between 1" and 10 .
In order to achieve tilting of the frame 1 8 in this fashion, the backrest portion 14 is mechanically linked to a support structure 20 for the mattress frame 1 8 as shown in Fig. 3.
The support structure 20 is of scissor-like construction and is mounted on a base frame 22 provided with castors 24. As is customary in hospital beds, the mattress frame 10 has a head bow or board 26 at one end and a foot bow or board 28 at the other end. The height of the mattress frame 1 8 with respect to the base frame 22 can be increased or decreased by the extension or retraction of a piston rod 30 which is pivotally connected at 32 to a part 34 of the support structure 20. The piston rod 30 forms part of an hydraulic ram 36 which is supplied with hydraulic fluid from an hydraulic pump 38 operated by a lever 40 provided with a pedal 42.
As will be seen from both Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, the lower end of the backrest portion 14 of the mattress platform 10 is welded or otherwise connected on both of its sides to a plate or other member 44 which is pivotally connected at 46 to the upper end of a respective girder 48 forming part of the scissor-like support structure 20. Such is the disposition of each plate 44 and its point of connection to its respective girder 48 that raising of the backrest portion 14 causes the two girders 48 and the other parts 34 and 50 of the support structure 20 to be slightly displaced so that the mattress frame 1 8 moves out of a horizontal position-as in Fig. 1-into the slightly inclined position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In so doing, a cross-strut 52 on the upper end of the parts 50 of the support structure 20 slides at its ends along slide surfaces 54 attached to the under-side of the mattress frame 18.
It will therefore be seen that, by means of the invention, the main portion 1 2 of the mattress support is tilted into a slightly "feet up" position whenever the portion 14 adjacent the head of the bed is raised to form a backrest.
A further benefit of the bed shown in the drawings is that a patient lying or sitting on the bed can easily adjust the position of the backrest portion 1 4 using his or her own weight to effect such movement, it being understood that suitable means (not shown) are provided to releasably maintain the back rest 14 in any desired position of inclination.
Claims (7)
1. A hospital bed having a mattress platform supported by a metal frame mounted on a support structure which is arranged to be retracted or extended in a vertical direction in order that the mattress frame may be raised or lowered, a portion of the mattress platform adjacent the head of the bed being pivotally mounted so that it can be swung upwards into a position where it serves as a backrest, in which the backrest portion of the mattress platform is mechanically linked to the support structure for the said frame in such a way that raising of the backrest causes the frame surrounding the mattress platform to be tilted out of a horizontal plane into a "feet-up" position.
2. A horizontal bed according to claim 1, in which the mattress platform is arranged to be tilted into an angle of between 1" and 10 with respect to the horizontal when the backrest is raised.
3. A hospital bed according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the support structure is of scissor-like construction and is mounted on a base frame provided with castors, and in which the height of the mattress frame with respect to the base frame can be increased or decreased by the extension or retraction of a piston rod which is pivotally connected to a part of the support structure.
4. A hospital bed according to claim 3, in which the piston rod forms part of an hydraulic ram which is supplied with hydraulic fluid from an hydraulic pump operated by a lever provided with a pedal.
5. A hospital bed according to any preceding claim, in which the lower end of the backrest portion of the mattress platform is welded or otherwise connected on both of its sides to a plate or other member which is pivotally connected to the upper end of a respective girder forming part of the support structure, the disposition of each plate and its point of connection to its respective girder being such that raising of the backrest portion causes the two girders and other parts of the support structure to be displaced so that the mattress frame moves out of a horizontal position into the "feet-up" position.
6. A hospital bed according to claim 5, in which a cross-strut on the part of the support structure is arranged to slide at its ends along slide surfaces attached to the underside of the mattress frame when the backrest is raised.
7. A hospital bed substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
