Abstract

A wages envelope (10) is formed by front and rear walls (12, 14) joined along three side edges with the front wall (12) having a central window (16) and a cutaway portion (18) along its fourth edge. A pay slip inserted into the envelope has its "nett pay" box positioned on the pay slip so that it is exposed in the cut-away portion (18) of the envelope, with the name and any other relevant details of the individual concerned being arranged in register with the window (16). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Stationery The present invention relates to stationery and in particular to wages envelopes, the construction of which facilitates their production and preparation.
Hitherto the preparation of wages envelopes has involved the production of both payslips and envelopes side by side in continuous sets on a common roll, the relevant individual's information being typed on each payslip and associated envelope. Each envelope and payslip set is then separated from adjoining sets along perforation lines, the envelope and payslip of each set then being separated and the payslip being inserted into the envelope with the appropriate amount of cash. The necessity of providing an adhesive seal for the envelopes during their initial production poses problems subsequently when the relevant individual information is typed onto the payslips and envelopes, normally by computer controlled printers.
The adhesive can adhere to the printer mechanism resulting in damage to the printer and it has proved necessary, therefore, either for the adhesive to be covered with a waxed paper tape which is subsequently removed or an alternative method of securing the payslip envelopes to be used. Neither solution has proved satisfactory.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved form of payslip and envelope therefore.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an envelope comprising front and rear walls joined together along three side edges thereof, one wall having a window for the display of information therethrough and a cut away portion along at least a portion of its fourth edge, and the other wall having a sealing flap formed along its fourth edge.
The flap is conveniently dimensioned to cover completely the cut away portion when the envelope is sealed and the window is arranged centrally of the associated wall.
The envelope also includes a slip such as a payslip with a preselected information portion arranged to be displayed in the envelope cut away portion and a further information portion arranged to be displayed through said window.
In a preferred embodiment the envelope and slip are a wages envelope and payslip.
The present invention is further described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows one embodiment of an envelope according to the present invention in the form of a wages envelope; and Figure 2 shows a payslip for use with the envelope of Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a wages envelope 10 which has front and rear walls 12 and 14 joined along three side edges. The front wall 12 is provided with an elongate window 16 generally centrally of the wall, the window being covered with suitable transparent material such as cellophane which is glued to the inner surface of the wall 12. The latter is also provided with a cut away portion 18 along its fourth edge, the cut away portion 18 extending along only a portion of the fourth edge, as shown in Figure 1, although it may conveniently extend the full length.
The fourth edge of the rear wall 14 carries a flap 20 which may be folded over the cut away portion 18 and sealed to the wall 12 to seal the envelope, the dimensions of the flap 20 being such that it completely obscures the cut away portion 18 when the envelope is sealed.
Figure 2 shows a payslip 22 which is designed for use with the envelope of Figure 1 and which comprises two portions 24 and 26 joined along a perforated line 28 along which the payslip is intended to be folded. Payslips 22 are manufactured in continuous sets between perforation lines.
The payslips are then printed, before being separated, with the relevant individual's information on each payslip. The payslips are then separated and each payslip is folded along the perforation line 28 and inserted into an envelope 10 with the "nett pay" box 30 exposed in the cut-away portion 18 of the envelope 10 and the name and any other relevant details of the individual arranged in register with the window 16.
This arrangement allows the payslips to be prepared and inserted into the wages envelopes at any convenient time prior to pay day so that the only operations which need to be carried out on pay day are the insertion of cash in the envelope and the sealing of the envelope.
Typical dimensions for the envelope are 108 x 108 mm with the window being 20 mm deep and 60 mm wide and conveniently 45 mm from the lower edge of the envelope. The cut-away portion 18 is conveniently 10 mm deep.
While the present invention has been particularly described with reference to wages envelopes and payslips it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention has applications in any situation where printed material needs to be inserted into an envelope aligned for display of certain parts of the printed material.

2. An envelope as claimed in claim 1 wherein the flap is dimensioned to cover completely the cut away portion when the envelope is sealed and the window is arranged centrally of the associated wall.
