Abstract
A mounting device for mounting one or more mirror panels to a wall surface comprising an elongate main strip of generally rectangular section whose underside surface is rebated along at least one side edge thereof to form a recess for receiving the side edge of a mirror (30, 32) to be mounted. The topside surface of the main strip is longitudinally rebated for receiving an elongate subsidiary strip (36). The main strip is adapted to be firmly fixed to a wall surface (34) by means of screws (27) extending through respective bores in the base of the topside recess. In the assembled state, the screws (27) are hidden from view by the subsidiary strip (36). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Mounting means for mirror panels
The present invention is concerned with a means for the mounting of mirror panels, for example on vertical wall surfaces.
An object of the invention is to provide a means of mounting mirror panels onto wall surfaces which enables the mirror panels to be easily assembled onto and dismantled from the wall and which at the same time is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
The present invention resides in a mounting device for mounting one or more mirror panels to a wall surface, the device comprising an elongate main strip whose underside is rebated along at least one side edge thereof to form a recess for receiving the side edge of a mirror panel to be mounted, the topside of the strip being longitudinally rebated for receiving an elongate subsidiary strip, and the main strip being adapted to be firmly fixed to said wall surface by means of one or more screws extending through respective bores in the base of the topside rebate, whereby, in the assembled state, the screws are hidden from view by the subsidiary strip.
For fitting two adjacent, parellel mirror panels, the underside of the main strip is rebated along both of its two longitudinal side edges. For fitting a single mirror panel into a corner or to terminate a mirrored area, the underside of the main strip is rebated along only one of its longitudinal side edges.
The invention is described further hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a mounting device in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the device of Fig. 1 when fitted with a decorative veneer;
Fig. is a sectional plan view showing the use of the device of Fig. 1 with two adjacent mirror panels; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of a modified device in use with a single mirror panel.
The device shown in Fig. 1 comprises an elongate strip 10 of chipboard having atop surface 12, a bottom surface 14 and side surfaces 16,18. The top surface 12 contains a longitudinally extending rebate 20 which forms a rectangularly sectioned channel in the surface 12. The bottom surface is longitudinally rebated at 22 and 24 whereby to form a pair of cavities on opposite sides of a central part 26. The rebated top surface contains a plurality of through-bores 28 for receiving fixing screws.
Fig. 3 shows how the device of Fig. 1 is used to fix two adjacent mirror panels 30, 32 to a vertical wall surface 34. The mirror panels 30, 32 are positioned on the wall 34 so as to be substantially uniformly spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than the width (X) of the central portion 26 of the strip 10. The strip is then screwed onto the wall (using suitable wall plugs as necessary) by means of screws 27 in the holes 28 so that the portion 26 lies between the mirror panels, the adjacent side edges of which being covered to a certain extent by the overlying sides of the strip. The depth (Y) of the rebated
portions 22, 24 is chosen to be slightly greater than
the thickness of the mirror panels so that the panels
are received snugly between the rebated parts 22,
24 and the wall surface 34 without stress and
without undue freedom.
It will be appreciated that because the side edges
of the mirror panels are covered by the device, they
do not need to be specially finished (e.g. bevelled)
and can be relatively rough without this being
visible.
In order to hide from sight the tops of the screws
27 which are exposed in the base of the rebate 20, a
decorative strip 36 is positioned within the rebate
20. This strip 36 can conveniently be fixed using
double-sided adhesive or some other means which
enables it to be removed easily in the event that the
mirror assembly is to be dismantled.
The strip 36 can be decorated as required. It can, for example, be a plain strip of hardboard or chipboard covered with imitation plastics veneer.
Another possibility is for the strip to be a length of mirrored glass -- again attached by double sided adhesive. The principal object of the strip 36 is thus to hide the screws used to fix the main strip 10 to the wall.
Fig. 4 shows a mofified devece 38 wherein the underside of the strip is only rebated at one side (as shown at 39). This is used when one reaches a corner. Another corner unit can have a rebate on its side surface, as shown by dotted lines at 40 in Fig. 4, for use in the event that the mirror panels are to continue on an adjacent wall.
Fig. 2 shows a strip 10 provided with a plastics imitation veneer 42 over its surfaces which will be exposed in use.
The strip need not be made of chipboard but can be any other suitable material.
1. A mounting device for mounting one or more mirror panels to a wall surface, the device comprising an elongate main strip of generally rectangular section whose underside is rebated along at least one side edge thereof to form a recess for receiving the side edge of a mirror panel to be mounted, the topside of the main strip being longitudinally rebated for receiving an elongate subsidiary strip, and the main strip being adapted to be firmly fixed to said wall surface by means of one or more screws extending through respective bores in the base of the topside rebate, whereby, in the assembled state, the screws are hidden from view by the subsidiary strip.
2. A mounting device as claimed in claim 1 which, for fitting two adjacent, parallel mirror panels to the wall surface, the underside of the main strip is rebated along both of its two longitudinal side edges.
3. A mounting device as claimed in claim 1 which, for fitting a single mirror panel into a corner or to terminate a mirrored area, the underside of the main strip is rebated along one longitudinal side edge only.
4. A mounting device as claimed in claim 1 which, for fitting two mirror panels into a right angled
