Description

SPECIFICATION Decorative mirror assemblies This invention relates to decorative mirror assemblies.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a mirror assembly which, in addition to fulfilling the usual functional purposes of a mirror, also fulfills certain decorative purposes.
According to the present invention, there is provided a decorative mirror assembly characterised in that it comprises a vitreous backing sheet at least part of whose area is provided with a reflective coating (hereinafter referred to as the 'backing mirror') two or more front mirrors secured to the front of the backing mirror to leave at least part of its reflective coating visible from the front, and wherein each of at least two of said mirrors has a periphery of which at least part is bevelled and exposed to the front of the assembly.
A mirror assembly according to the present invention, due to the presence of a plurality of front mirrors on a backing mirror and to the bevelling of at least part of the periphery of at least two of those mirrors, presents a combination of images of an object viewed by way of the assembly, and those images vary with the angle at which the mirror assembly is viewed.
This effect, and the combination of images reflected at several reflective surfaces located at different distances from the object viewed is enhanced by the adoption of one or more of the following optional features: (i) A plurality of said front mirrors are secured side by side onto another mirror.
(ii) There are bevelled peripheral parts of different mirrors which are located adjacent one another.
(iii) One of such bevelled peripheral parts faces the other.
(iv) Mutually most remote edges of at least two such front mirrors are bevelled.
(v) The reflective surface of at least one front mirror is spaced from the reflective surface of the backing mirror by at least iOmm.
In embodiments of the invention in which the reflective surfaces of a front mirror and the backing mirror are spaced apart by at least 10mum, it is preferred that there is an air space between at least one front mirror and the backing mirror. This enables the assembly to be of less massive construction.
Advantageously, a foamed plastic support is bonded to the rear face of the backing mirror, and it is preferred that anchoring means is embedded in said support. The adoption of these optional but preferred features obviates any need to provide the mirror assembly with a frame, while allowing it to be mounted, for example on a wall, by means which is concealed from view.
Various preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figures 1 a and 1 b are respectively front and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly, showing a first embodiment of the invention; Figures 2a and 2b are respectively front and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly, showing a second embodiment of the invention; Figures 3a, 3b and 3c are respectively front, right side edge and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly, showing a third embodiment of the invention; Figures 4a, 4b and 4c are respectively front, right side edge and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly showing a fourth embodiment of the invention;; Figures 5a and 5b are respectively front and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly showing a fifth embodiment of the invention; Figures 6a and 6b are respectively front and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly showing a sixth embodiment of the invention; Figures 7a and 7b are respectively front and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly showing a seventh embodiment of the invention; Figures 8a, 8b and 8c are respectively front right side edge and bottom edge elevational views of a wall mirror assembly showing an eighth embodiment of the invention;; Figures 9a, 9b, 9c and 9d are respectively a front elevational view, a left side edge elevational view, a bottom edge elevational view, and a right side edge view partly in elevation and partly in cross section of a wall mirror assembly showing a ninth embodiment of the invention; Figures 1 Oa and 1 Ob are respectively a front elevational view and a bottom edge view partly in elevation and partly in cross section of a wall mirror assembly showing a tenth embodiment of the invention; Figures 11 a and 11 b are respectively a front elevational view and a bottom edge view partly in elevation and partly in cross section of a wall mirror assembly showing an eleventh embodiment of the invention; and Figures 1 2a and 1 2b are respectively a detail side cross sectional view and a detail rear elevational view of a wall mirror assembly showing a twelfth embodiment of the invention.
Each illustrated wall mirror assembly includes a backing support layer 1 of a material such as polyurethane foam, in which is embedded means for fixing the mirror assembly to a wall or other support surface. The support layer 1 is represented, in each edge view, by a relatively thick sheet of trapezoidal cross section. The rear surface of this backing support 1 may be flat or provided with recesses for attachment purposes. This backing support would not be seen when the mirror assembly is installed.
In addition, each mirror assembly illustrated is composed of a vitreous backing sheet 2 which defines the overall outline of the mirror assembly. At. least part of the area of each backing sheet 2 is provided with a reflective coating (not shown) and such backing sheet will hereinafter be referred to as a 'backing mirror' .
A plurality of smaller front mirrors is fixed to the backing mirror. In the illustrated embodiments all visible parts of the backing mirror 2 are reflective.
In the embodiments of Figures 1-5, 7, 8 and 9, the backing mirror 2 is square and has edges 3 which form a right angle with the main surface. In the embodiment of Figures 6, the backing mirror 2 is square and has bevelled edges 4. In the embodiments of Figures 10 and 11, the backing mirror is circular and the periphery is bevelled in Figures 10 and square in Figures 11.

In the embodiment of Figures 2, four small front mirrors 7, each having a square outline and two adjacent bevelled edges 6 and two adjacent square edges are mounted in a regular pattern on the backing mirror so that the bevelled edges 6 of each front mirror 7 face bevelled edges 6, of adjacent front mirrors 7 and the square edges of the front mirrors 7, are coplanar with the edges 3 of the backing mirror 2. The top edge and both side edges sash have the form shown in Figure 2b.
In the embodiment of Figures 3, two small front mirrors 8, each having a rectangular outline and one bevelled edge 6 and three sqaure edges, are mounted on the backing mirror 2 so that the bevelled edges 6 of the two front mirrors face one another, and the square edges of the front mirrors are coplanar with the edges 3 of the backing mirror. The top edge has the form shown in Figure 3c and the left side edge has the form shown in Figure 3b.
In the embodiment of Figures 4, two identical front mirrors 8 of rectangular outline, each having one bevelled edge 6 and three square edges, are mounted on the backing mirror 2 so that the bevelled edges 6 of the two front mirrors 8 face one another while the square edges of the front mirrors are coplanar with the square edges 3 of the backing mirror. The top edge of the assembly has the form shown in Figure 4c, and the left side edge has the form shown in Figure 4b.
In the embodiment of Figures 5, a first small front mirror 9 having a square outline and bevelled edges 10 is mounted centrally on the backing mirror 2, and a second small front mirror 11, which is smaller that the first front mirror 9, and which has a square outline and bevelled edges 12, is centrally mounted on the first front mirror 9. The top and side edges have the form shown in Figure 5b.
In the embodiment of Figures 6, four small front mirrors 13, each having the form of a circular quadrant and having two straight bevelled edges 14, and one quarter-circle edge square to the main surface, are mounted on the backing mirror 2 so that the bevelled edges 14 of each front mirror 1 3 face the bevelled edges 1 4 of adjacent mirrors 1 3 and the circular edges of the four front mirrors 1 3 define a common circle. The top and side edges have the form shown in Figure 6b.
In Figures 7, four front mirrors 1 5 each having a right triangular outline and two square edges extending from the right angle corner and a bevelled base edge 16, are mounted on the backing mirror 2 so that the square edges of each front mirror 1 5 face square edges of adjacent front mirrors, and the bevelled edges 1 6 of opposite front mirrors 1 5 are mutually most remote and are directed toward respective corners of the backing mirror. The top and side edges each have the form shown in Figure 7b.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 8, two identical front mirrors 1 7 each having a rectangular outline with respect to three edges and a concave curvature along the fourth edge 18, with the three straight line edges being square to the main surface and the curved edge 1 8 being bevelled, are mounted on the backing mirror 2 so that the curved bevelled edges 1 8 of the two smaller front mirrors 1 7 face one another, and the straightline edges of the front mirrors are coplanar with the edges 3 of the backing mirror 2. The top edge has the form shown in Figure 8c and the left edge has the form shown in Figure 8b.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 9, two identical front mirrors 19, each having a rectangular outline with respect to three edges and a concave curvature along the fourth edge 20 are mounted on the backing mirror.
The straight-line edges are square to the main surface of each front mirror, while the concave edge 20 is bevelled. A straight-line edge of one front mirror 1 9 faces a straight-line edge of the other front mirror 1 9 and the concave edges 20 of the two front mirrors both face in the same direction. Two straightline edges of each front mirror are coplanar with corresponding edges 3 of the backing mirror 2. The right edge has essentially the form shown in Figure 9b.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 10, a first front mirror 21 of square outline and having a central circular cut-out is centrally mounted on the backing mirror. The internal edge of the first front mirror 21 is at right angles to the main surface of that front mirror.
The external edge 22 of the first front mirror is slightly bevelled. A second front mirror 23 of circular outline and having a bevelled edge 24 is mounted on the backing mirror within the circular cut-out in the first front mirror 21.
The top and side edges have the form shown in Figure 10b.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1, a first front mirror 25 of circular outline and having a central circular cut-out is mounted on the backing mirror 2. The internal and external edges of this first front mirror 25 extend at right angles to the main surface thereof, and the outer diameter of this first front mirror 25 is identical to that of the backing mirror so that the outer edge of the first front mirror is coplanar with the edge 3 of the backing mirror 2. A second front mirror 26 having a circular outline and a central circular cut-out is mounted on the backing mirror 2 within the circular cut-out in the first front mirror 25. The second front mirror 26 has a bevelled outer edge 27, and an inner edge which is at right angles to the main surface thereof.A third front mirror 28 having a circular outline and a bevelled edge 29 is mounted on the backing mirror 2 within the circular cut-out of the second front mirror 26.
The edge of this mirror assembly when viewed from any direction, will have the form shown in Figure 11 b.
Figure 1 2a shows in side view a cross section through a wall mirror assembly, in which a backing mirror 2, having a reflective coating 30 protected by a layer of paint 31, is secured by an adhesive layer 32, to a backing support 1. For example the mirror may be provided with a silver reflective layer 30 which is covered in turn with a copper layer (not shown) and a protective paint layer 31, in classical manner. The adhesive constituting the layer 32 is suitably a two-part epoxy adhesive.
Two smaller front mirrors respectively shown at 33 and 34, each having bevelled edges, are secured to the front face of the backing mirror 2. Like the backing mirror 2, the two front mirrors 33,34 each bear a reflective layer protected by a paint layer, as is conventional. The first front mirror 33 is directly bonded to the backing mirror 2 by means of an adhesive layer 35 which may for example be formed by a thin film of polymeric material coated with adhesive on each of its faces. The second front mirror 34 is secured to the backing mirror 2 via a spacer member 36 bonded to the front mirror 34 by adhesive 37 and to the backing mirror 2 by adhesive 38 so that the respective reflective surfaces of the two mirrors are spaced apart by at least 10mum. Double-sided adhesive strip may be used to effect such bonding.
Any front mirror directly attached to the backing mirror, like the first front mirror 33, may be calendered onto the backing mirror to effect secure bonding, but simply pressing the mirrors together is preferred when a front mirror is indirectly attached to the backing mirror, for example via one or more spacer members such as that shown at 36, or via another front mirror.
The greater spacing between the reflective layers carried by the second front mirror 34 and the backing mirror 2 which is achieved by using spacer members such as that shown at 36, enhances parallax effects when viewing the mirror to provide a desired decorative effect.
Anchoring means 39 is embedded in the backing support layer 1. In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 12a, this anchoring means consists of a plate 40 to which are attached the edges of the side walls of a channel member 41. The base of the channel member 41 is provided with a keyhole-shaped opening more clearly shown in Figure 12b, and the anchoring means 39 is embedded in the backing support with the narrow end of the keyhole opening 42 uppermost and the base of the channel 41 flush with the rear of the support 1, so that the anchoring means may be hooked over the head of a screw or bolt previously driven into a wall. The anchoring means 39 may suitably be of welded steel construction.
