Abstract

A golf training aid comprises a pair of training devices 14, each device 14 has a body 16 and a pair of pivotally mounted arms 15 which cooperate with the arms 15 of the other device 14 in defining a corridor through which a golf club 11 may pass after striking a ball 12. An inaccurate swing causes deflection of arm(s) 15. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Golf training aid The present invention relates to golf training aids and more particularly to a golf training aid which will aid the golfer in determining the path through which the golf club head passes.
It is a disadvantage of known golf training methods that the path of the golf club head is not easily determined and accordingly the golfer may be incorrectly moving the club head relative to the ball.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
There is disclosed herein a golf training device to be fixed to a ground surface, said device comprising a body, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on the body so as to be pivotable about horizontally spaced generally vertical axes, said arms being located on said body so as to project therefrom in a generally co-extensive relationship and so as to be pivotable in the same generally horizontal plane.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic plan view of a golf training aid; Figure 2 is a schematic side elevation of a device used in the aid of Fig. 1; and Figure 3 is a schematic parts exploded perspective view of the device of Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 there is schematically depicted a golf training aid 10 to aid in determining the path of the golf club head 11 relative to the ball 1 2. In the embodiment depicted in Fig. 1 the ball 1 2 rests on a ground surface and is to be stroked so as to pass generally in the direction illustrated by the arrow 1 3. The aid 10 includes two training devices 14 which in the present instance may be substantially identical. Each device 14 includes two pivotally mounted co-extensive arms 1 5 which are pivotally mounted on a base 1 6 so that if struck by the head 11, or ball 12, are deflected from the position depicted in Fig. 1.
More particularly, and with reference to Fig.
2, each arm 1 5 is attached to the base 1 6 by means of pins 1 7 which are received within vertically aligned pairs of apertures 1 9. The arms 1 5 are located at the same height from the ground surface to which each device 1 4 is fixed.
In use of the above described training aid 10, a ball would be placed between the rear 2 arms 1 5 and then struck by the golf club head 11. If the golf club head 11 is passing along a generally linear path then it will pass between both pairs of arms 1 5 without causing deflection thereof. If on the other hand the gold club 11 does not follow the correct path then one of the arms 1 5 will be deflected thereby indicating to the golfer that his swing, and in particular his follow through, requires correction.
As can be seen from Figs. 3 and 4 the base 1 6 is provided with two passages 20 which would allow, by means of pins 23, for the base 1 6 to be secured to a ground surface.
It should further be appreciated that the base 16, and or arms 15, may be of any desired configuration providing they perform the basic function of defining a corridor through which the club head 11 may pass when moving along the correct linear path.
In the present embodiment, a hollow cap 22 is provided and has an external pattern to simulate the surface of a golf ball. The cap is also provided with passages 21 to cooperate with passages 20. The cap 22 cooperates with the base 1 6 to define a cavity within which the arms 1 5 are located when not in use.
It should further be appreciated that the training aid 10 need not be used with a ball 1 2. In this instance a user merely passes the golf club head 11 between the arms 1 5 to determine whether he is correctly using the golf club.
Preferably the aid 10 is form of plastics material, with the arm 1 5 resistant to damage due to impact with the club head 11.
1. A golf training device 14 to be fixed to a ground surface, said device comprising a body 16, a pair of arms 1 5 pivotally mounted on the body 1 6 so as to be pivotable about horizontally spaced generally vertical axes, said arms 1 5 being located on said body 1 6 so as to project therefrom in a generally coextensive relationship and so as to be pivotable in the same generally horizontal plane.
2. The device 1 4 of claim 1 wherein said body 1 6 comprises a base 1 6 and a hollow cap 22, said base 1 6 and cap 22 cooperating to define a cavity within which said arms 1 5 are locatable when not in use.
3. The device 14 of claim 1 wherein said arms 14 are of equal length.
4. The device 14 of claim 1 further including means 21 to enable said device to be fixed to a ground surface.
5. The device 14 of claim 4 wherein said means 21 are a plurality of passages 21 to receive one or more pins 23 so that each pin 23 may pass through the body 1 6 and enter said ground surface to thereby fix said device 1 4 to said ground surface.
6. A golf training aid substantially as here it before described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
