Abstract

A display package for cosmetics and the like comprises an open-topped substantially rigid box (1) in which is captively retained a compartmented container (2) having an integrally moulded transparent lid (4). The compartmented container (2), which may be produced by vacuum-forming or thermo-forming, may be captively retained in the open-topped box (1) by adhesive applied at selected positions, or by heat-seaming or welding. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Display package This invention relates to a package for the display of goods, and especially to a package in which the goods may not only be displayed but may also be transported.
There are numerous packages on the market nowadaysfortransporting and displaying goods such as, for example, cameras, cosmetics and the like. Examples are illustrated in U.S. Patent Specifications Nos. 3,352,478, 3,799,332, 4,209,090, 2,524,191 and 4,170,327. In all of these cases the construction of the package is such that the cover may remain in the open position, thus displaying the particular merchandise.
Such packages are often of fairly complicated form, and expensive to manufacture, and it is the object of the present invention to provide a display package which is simple to manufacture and which does not rely upon the ability of the lid to remain in the open position in order that the contents of the package may be displayed.
According to the invention a display package comprises an open-topped substantially rigid box in which is captively retained a compartmented container having an integrally moulded transparent lid.
The package of the invention thus comprises two separately-formed components, namely an opentopped substantially rigid box which may be formed of, for example, cardboard, and a compartmented container. The compartmented container has an integrally moulded lid which is transparent so that the merchandise in the container may be viewed, whether or not the lid is in the open position. The compartmented container is suitably made by a vacuum-forming orthermo-forming technique.
In one embodiment the compartmented container comprises an upperwall having compartments of varying shapes and sizes formed therein, the upper wall being bounded by substantially vertical sidewalls, and a lid being integrally moulded with one of the sidewalls, suitably through a web of material pivotal about the said sidewall and about which the lid in turn itself pivots.
The compartmented container may be captively retained in the open-topped box by means of adhesive applied at selected portions, or it may, for example, be heat-seamed or welded to the opentopped box.
The entire compartmented container is suitably made from a relatively rigid plastics material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or a polycarbonate.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display package according to the invention, in the closed configuration; Figure 2 is a plan view of the compartmented container component of the package; and Figure 3 is a section on the line 111-111 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the display package comprises an outer open-topped substantially rigid box 1 within which is captively retained a transparent compartmented container 2. The box 1 may be formed from any suitable material, such as cardboard or rigid plastics material. It may be of "setup box" construction, assembled from a cardboard blank, or moulded, e.g. thermo-formed or vacuumformed, from plastics material. As seen in Figure 1, it comprises a base and four upstanding walls.
The compartmented container 2 is a non-piece moulding, suitably produced by vacuum-forming or thermo-forming, and is of much less rigid construction than the box 1. It consists of a display portion 3 and a cover portion 4joined to the display portion 3 through a web 5. Display portion 3 consists of a peripheral upstanding wall 6 merging through a peripheral shoulder portion 7 with a top face 8 containing a number of product-receiving cavaties 9, 1 O, 1 1.
Cover portion 4 comprises a top 20 having a depending peripheral wall 21.
The web 5 intermediate the display portion 3 and the cover portion 4 is provided with a channel 30 parallel to the longer sides of the web 5, and closer to the cover portion 2 than to the display portion 3.
The presence of channel 30 promotes the hingeing movement of cover portion 2 about the web 5, the web 5 itself hingeing about the wall 6 of the display portion 3 to which it is attached.
The display package of the invention is assembled by inserting the compartmented container 2, with or without produce contained in the cavities 9-11, into the rigid outer box 1, and adhesively or otherwise attachment comprises adhesive applied to the four corners of the container 2, and stuck to the box 1. In another embodiment the outer face of the channel 30 may be adhesively secured or fused to the inside of the adjacent wall of the box 1.
It will be seen that the present invention provides a display package with an integrally-formed hinged lid, a product not so far available on the market. By virtue of the rigidity of the outer box, a transparent display package is obtained which is substantially stronger than previously known transparent containers, which are noted for their inherent lack of strength.
1. A display package comprising an-open topped substantially rigid box in which is captively retained a compartmented container having an integrally moulded transparent lid.
2. A display package as claimed in claim 1 in which the compartmented container comprises an upper wall having compartments formed therein, the upper wall being bounded by substantially vertical sidewalls, and a lid integrally moulded with one of the sidewalls and joined thereto through a web of material pivotal about said sidewall and about which the lid pivots.
3. A display package substantially as described with reference to the drawings.
