Abstract

A door, or window security grille comprises mutually perpendicular elongate elements (12, 13) members (14) secured to the frame of the door or window, the elements being connected at their crossing points by connecting members (18, Figs. 2, 3).

Description

SPECIFICATION Grilile for application to door or window This invention relates to a grille for use with a door or window. The grille may be required for security purposes, since a window pane or glass panel in a door is vulnerable to breakage of the glass. However, in certain circumstances a grille may have a purely decorative effect.
According to one aspect of the invention, we provide a grille for application to a door or window, comprising at least one elongate element extending in a first direction, at least one elongate element extending in a second direction and crossing the first said element, at least one connecting member provided at the crossing of said elements and affording formations extending in said first and second directions and receiving said elements, and a plurality of fixing members provided at the ends of said elements and adapted to be secured to a frame of the door or window.
The invention also provides a kit of parts for making such a grille.
Particular features and advantages of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a window or door frame, having a grille according to the invention applied thereto; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a connecting member of a grille according to the invention; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the other side of the connecting member of Fig. 2.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is shown a window or door frame made of timber and having a vertical member 10 and a horizontal member 11. The frame defines an aperture containing a glass panel. A grille is applied in the aperture containing the glass panel, and comprises at least one vertical elongate member 12 and at least one horizontal elongate member 13, which elongate members are, for example, aluminium alloy extrusions.
At each free end of the elongate members there is provided a fixing member 14 and each fixing member comprises a part 15 affording a socket and a part 16 with an aperture for receiving a screw 17 by which the fixing member is secured to the window or door frame. The part 16 of the fixing member may, as illustrated, have a decorative shape. As illustrated, the elongate members 12, 13 of the grille are of square cross sectional shape and the sockets afforded by the parts 15 of the fixing members are also of square cross sectional shape and of slightly larger dimensions so that they can simply be slid onto the ends of the elongate members.
However, it will be appreciated that the elongate members and sockets could be any other desired cross sectional shape. It will further be noted that the longitudinal centre lines of the sockets defined by parts 15 of the fixing members are offset from the parts 16 of the fixing members, so that the latter can be fitted to the frame members 10. 11 in appropriate orientations to allow for the necessary crossing of the elongate elements 12. 13.
Although not illustrated in Fig. 1, where the elongate elements 12, 13 cross one another there are provided connecting members as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Each connecting member comprise a first body portion 18 affording a trough 19 of square cross section to receive elongate element 12, and two further body portions 20, 21 extending laterally from the body portion 18 and affording aligned square section troughs 22, 23 receiving elongate element 13. The connecting members may be die castings of an appropriate alloy. It will be noted that the shape of the connecting members is such that they can easily be manufactured by die casting.
The assembly of the grille according to the invention from elongate elements, a plurality of identical fixing members and a plurality of identical connecting members means that a grille of desired size can be assembled as required to fit any appropriate door or window. The lateral spacing of the vertical members of the grille may be chosen as desired, as may be the vertical spacing of the horizontal members. A grille may be supplied as a kit of parts in which the elongate members may be cut to any desired length by the user of the grille. To assemble the grille, all the elongate elements extending in one direction would be cut to appropriate length and laid out in their required spacing with the connecting members fitted to them and appropriately positioned in alignment with one another. The elongate elements extending in the other direction would then be fitted by sliding them end wise into the appropriate formations on the connecting members. The fixing members would then be fitted to the free ends of the elongate members, and the completed grille can then be fixed to the door or window frame.
Although as illustrated the formations on the connecting members extend in directions perpendicular to one another, it would be possible for them to extend at other angles to one another so that, for example, a grille of diamond pattern could be constructed. It may even be possible for the connecting members to provide for reception of further elongate elements or other parts associated with the grille, if a more complex grille is required.
