Abstract

A high-performance wheel of aluminium or magnesium alloy, is subject to abrasion caused by movement of the pneumatic tyre against the wheel rim. To increase the ability of the wheel to withstand this abrasion, the wheel rim is coated with a plastics material, such as nylon, which itself is wear resistant. The coating can be applied as a powder which is then melted in an oven. The whole wheel may be coated. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Motor vehicle wheels This invention relates to motor vehicle wheels, and to a method of increasing the durability of such wheels.
Wheels of aluminium or magnesium alloys are widely used on modern cars, particularly on high performance cars. Such alloy wheels are lighter than conventional steel wheels, but the material is softer. Experience has shown that appreciable wear occurs on the rims of alloy wheels where the tyre moves against the rim. The problem is particularly marked with low profile tyres, and is aggravated by road grit and dust which enters between the tyre and the wheel rim lip.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of increasing the durability of a motor vehicle wheel which is adapted to support a pneumatic tyre, wherein at least the surfaces of the wheel which are to be in contact with the tyre are coated with a wearresistant plastics coating.
The invention also provides a motor vehicle wheel adapted to support a pneumatic tyre, at least the surfaces of the wheel which are to be in contact with the tyre being coated with a wear-resistant plastics coating.
Preferably the whole of the wheel has a plastics coating. This can increase the resistance of the whole of the wheel to corrosion and accidental damage while also providing resistance to abrasion caused by the tyre.
The plastics may be nylon. Both nylon 11 and nylon 1 2 have been found suitable. The nylon (or other plastics) may be used in powder form, with the powder being electrostatically applied and the wheel then being heated in an oven so that the powder melts and flows over the wheel surface.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a section through the rim of an alloy motor vehicle wheel.
The rim 10 has an inner tyre-retaining lip 1 2 and an outer lip 14. On rear wheels, the inner lip 1 2 tends to wear most, and the area of metal which may be worn away is shaded and indicated by short arrows in the drawing.
On front wheels, the outer lip 14 may wear as indicated.
To reduce this wear, the wheel is subjected to a chromic phosphoric acid pre-treatment.
Instead of a conventional primer coat, nylon powder is electrostatically applied to the whole of the wheel. Nylon 11 and 1 2 have both been found to be suitable. The wheel with the powder on it is then placed in an oven for twenty minutes at 1 90 C to 220"C to melt the nylon and complete the adhesion.
A coating thickness of 90-120 microns is obtained.
A conventional top coat is then applied over the nylon coating, but no lacquer over the top coat is necessary, since the necessary wear resistance is provided by the nylon.
The nylon coating substantially improves the resistance of the wheel rim to wear caused by movement of the tyre on the rim. In addition improved corrosion resistance and damage resistance are both obtained. Improvements are also achieved in resisting build up of foreign matter on the wheel rim, between the tyre and the rim, since it becomes more difficult for the foreign matter to adhere to the rim.
1. A method of increasing the durability of a motor vehicle wheel which is adapted to support a pneumatic tyre, wherein at least the surfaces of the wheel which are to be in contact with the tyre are coated with a wearresistant plastics coating.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the whole of the wheel is coated with the plastics coating.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the plastics coating is applied in powder form, and the wheel with the coating is then heated to melt the powder.
4. A method as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the powder is applied electrostatically.
5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the plastics coating is nylon.
6. A motor vehicle wheel adapted to support a pneumatic tyre, wherein at least the surfaces of the wheel which are to be in contact with the tyre are coated with a wearresistant plastics coating.
7. A wheel as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the whole of the wheel is coated with the plastics coating.
8. A wheel as claimed in Claim 6 or Claim 7, wherein the plastics coating is nylon.
9. A wheel as claimed in Claim 8, wherein the nylon is nylon 11 or nylon 1 2.
