Abstract

Hand -actuated gear for operating brakes and switches, arrangements of; controlling levers associated with hand steering- devices; unshipping steering hand-wheels; steering- gear.-In electric vehicles means are provided, in addition to the ordinary controlling gear, for steering and controlling the vehicle from either side so that the driver can walk alongside and control the vehicle for manoeuvring purposes. The steering hand-wheel 1 may be secured by a screwed arm 8 on the ordinary steering- shaft 7 or on an auxiliary transverse shaft 14 geared thereto. The shaft 14, which may extend right across the vehicle, is geared to the shaft 7 by means of gearing 27, Fig. 3, a shaft 28 and gearing 29. The main controller 6 is actuated by a hand-lever 5 mounted on the steering column and connected to the controller by a tubular shaft 25 and gearing 24. An auxiliary controller 18 with a handle 19 is provided at the side of the vehicle, a switch (not shown) being arranged to ensure that only one controller at a time is active. In addition to the usual hand-brake lever 11 and a foot-brake lever (not shown) an auxiliary brake-lever 16 is mounted at one or both sides of the vehicle, this lever 16 being connected to the foot-brake mechanism through lost-motion connections so that either the lever 16 or the foot lever can operate the brake without affecting the other lever. 214,102. Whitehead, H. May 15, 1923. Brakes.-A brake drum is fixed on the rear end of the propeller or worm shaft of a Ford truck chassis, and is engaged by internal or external brake members. The worm shaft A carries a brake drum L the boss of which fits in a thrust bearing C replacing the usual thrust bearing between the shaft A and the axle casing B. Hardened steel rings K, J take up the forward and rear worm thrusts respectively. Pivoted brake shoes P are expanded by means of a bell-crank lever A<1> acting through a rod C<1>, a shaft S and links R, the lever A<1> being actuated by the usual foot-brake pedal which is disconnected from the usual transmission brake. In a modification, pivoted semi-circular blocks enclose the brakedrum, and are actuated in a similar manner to the blocks P. A fixed plate N carrying the brake mechanism is secured to the axle casing by means of screws O and G'.
