Abstract

The covering uses elongate sections 28, 30 at either side of the frame and a covering panel 16 which extend between the sections to cover the old frame. The elongate sections have channels which receive the opposite edges of the panel, and one of the sections (30) fits into the rebate of the old door frame and forms a new rebate. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION
Covering for a frame for a room or front door or the like fixed in a building The invention relates to a covering assembly for a frame for a room or front door or the like fixed in a building. The invention is divided out of the specification of our British Patent
Application 8203110, which also relates to such a covering.
Coverings for door frames are known. The known coverings are placed on the door frames in such a way that the rebate is maintained as a cavity. This means that the thickness of the covering panels must be added to the thickness of the frame, so that the opening width of the door is correspondingly reduced. In the case of the dimensions of the known coverings, this reduces the opening width by 50mm. To avoid this opening width loss, a covering has already been developed in which a shaped member is inserted directly into the rebate of the old door tining.
According to the present invention, there is provided a kit for fitting a covering on a door frame, the kit comprising two elongate sections, a first section having two webs at right angles to one another to fit in a door frame rebate, an elongate channel on the back of one of the webs, with the channel walls being generally perpendicular to said one of the webs, and at least one flange on the back of the other web, and the second section having an elongate channel corresponding to the channel on the first section, and at least one flange generally perpendicular to the channel walls.
The invention also provides a covering as- sembly for covering a door frame, the assembly comprising a panel for covering the door frame lining, the opposite edges of the panel being received in channels formed in elongate sections extending along the edges of the door frame, one of the sections includ- ing two webs at right angles to one another for fitting into the door frame rebate, and both sections having flanges extending generally perpendicular to the panel.
Other optional features of the invention will 115

Claims (13)

  1. be apparent from Claims 3 to 12.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a section through an embodi- 120 ment of a covering according to the invention used for covering a wooden frame; Figure 2 is a detail of Fig. 1, and Figure 3 a section through an embodiment of a covering used with a steel frame.
The drawings show brickwork 12, which in the embodiment of Fig. 1 is surrounded by a wooden frame 14. Covering panels 16, preferably of chipboard engage on the wooden frame 14. The individual faces of the frame are designated as follows: Lining 22, architrave 24 and rebate 26. A clamping section 28 is mounted between the lining and the architrave. A shaped section 30 is located in the rebate. The shaped member 30 has two ledges 32 and 34 located in the rebate. Both the sections 28 and 30 have legs 70 which engage over the covering panels 16 so as to hold them. In the closed position, a door closes against an elastic sealing strip fitted into a slot 72 in the ledge 34. By means of setscrews 46, the section 30 can be mounted at varying distahces from the wooden frame 14 and as a result is adjustable relative to the vertical and can be precisely aligned in the perpendicular.
Fig. 1 shows an em ' bodiment of a covering according to the invention used for covering a wooden frame 14. Both the clamping section 28 and the shaped section 30 have pairs of facing legs 70, which are pushed onto the front and rear faces of the covering panels 16. Their spacing is such that this pushing on requires a certain amount of force. Thus, covering panels 16, whose edges are between legs 70, are securely held. A further feature of this embodiment is constituted by slots 72. They are formed by inwardly extending projections 74 and shoulder surfaces of the clamp- ing section 28 and the shaped section 30. Angle brackets are inserted into these slots at the mitre joints when the vertical and horizontal shoulders abut at 45'. As a result, the vertical and horizontal sections are firmly held together. A further feature is constituted by the spacing screws 76. They are arranged in a row and are spaced with respect to the setscrews 46. Whereas the latter draw the shaped section 30 onto the wooden frame 14, the shaped section 30 is held away from the frame by the spacing screws 76. By correctly screwing in and out or by adjusting the two screw types, the shaped section 30 can be brought into the vertical position. Any slope which the old wooden frame 14 may have is not transferred to the shaped section 30.
Fig. 2 shows a detail of Fig. 1 at the point where a door will abut. For reasons of clarity, no elastic sealing strip is shown.
Fig. 3 shows an embodiment of the covering for covering an old steel frame 62. The special feature of this embodiment is that the clamping section 28 and the shaped section 30 have lengthened limbs 78 extending over the ornamental side 24 and rebated side 26. The plaster or covering strips 48 are shaped in one piece onto the limbs 78. This considerably simplifies, speeds up and therefore reduces the cost of lining the old frame.
The covering according to the invention can be rapidly and simply fitted. The compensation for any warping simultaneously ensures that doors close tightly again. Outer surfaces which have become unattractive can likewise 2 GB2140066A 2 be covered.
CLAIMS 1. A kit for fitting a covering on a door frame, the kit comprising two elongate sec- 70 tions, a first section having two webs at right angles to one another to fit in a door frame rebate, an elongate channel on the back of one of the webs, with the channel walls being generally perpendicular to said one of the webs, and at least one flange on the back of the other web, and the second section having an elongate channel corresponding to the channel on the first section, and at least one flange generally perpendicular to the channel walls.
  2. 2.
