Abstract

The block is formed of two opposed wall members (11, 12) tied together with a number of tie- bars (14). The tie-bars are fitted to the inner faces of the wall members in undercut apertures. A method of making such a building block is also disclosed as well as a mould for forming the wall members. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Building block and method of making same This invention relates to a building block and to a method and mould for making a building block.
According to the present invention there is provided a building block comprising a pair of opposed wall members which are spaced apart to form a cavity and interconnected by a plurality of tie-bars, the tie-bars being fixed in apertures in the inner faces of the wall mem bers.
Preferably, said apertures are undercut to form a key in said wall members.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a method of making a build ing block comprising providing a first wall member having a plurality of undercut apertures on its inner face, fixing one end of respective tie-bars in each aperture and fixing a second wall member to said tie-bars by means of undercut apertures provided in an inner face of said second wall member.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention there is provided a mould for a wall member of a building block, the mould being such as to result in a plurality of apertures in an inner face of the wall member.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a building block made in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line B-B of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view of a mould for making the wall members forming the building block of Fig. 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a mould for making four wall members; Figure 5 is a part sectional view of a mould; Figure 6 is a perspective view showing a stage in the manufacture of the building block of the invention; and Figures 7 and 8 show the building block in use.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a building block 1 is made up of a pair of wall members 11, 1 2. The outer face of each wall member is preferably provided with a textured surface 11 a, 1 2a, the inner face 11 b, 1 2b being generally flat and being provided with apertures 1 3. Tie-bars 14 are fixed in the apertures 1 3 so as to space the wall members and provide a cavity building block A suitable mould 2 is illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The mould 2 has dividing partitions 20 defining four moulding zones. On the base 21 of each zone there are formed three upstanding posts 23 to form the apertures 1 3 in the wall members 11, 12.
A retarder is applied to the bottom of the apertures formed by the posts to prevent setting of the concrete and result in the undercut apertures shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 illustrates a stack of blocks during their assembly, the stack is held together by means of a wire clamp 40, the correct spacing being ensured by wooden spacers 41.
Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate, in elevation and plan respectively, the building block of the present invention in use. Fig. 7 shows a completed retaining wall and Fig. 8.shows a garden or boundary wall.
The cavity building blocks of the present invention may be used also in tropical housing wherein the cavity is filled with moulding foam. Additionally, by filling the cavity with waterproof cement, the building blocks may be used in swimming pools and fish farms.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
