Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for advancing pallets in a tile making machine This invention relates to tile making machines and provides an improved mechanism for ad vancing pallets to the tile forming device.
U.S. Patent No. 3,677,686 discloses appa ratus for feeding relative to a moulding ma chine a continuous stream of pallets arranged end-to-end, characterized by the provision of pallet drive means including endless conveyor means upon which are pivotally connected a series of spaced driving elements each of which includes a nose portion for engaging an appropriate rearwardly directed face on the pallets, and a follower portion adapted for engagement by stationary cam track means: The cam track means includes an inclined first portion that converges at an acute angle toward the horizontal axis of the upper run of the conveyor means, and a second portion that is generally parallel with said axis. When the follower portion of a given drive element engages the first track portion, the drive member is pivoted from a retracted position forwardly relative to the conveyor means to drive the pallets at a speed greater than that of said conveyor means. When the follower portion engages the second track portion, the drive element travels at the speed of the conveyor means, and consequently the faster travelling pallets--which are now driven by a subsequent drive element whose follower portion is in engagement with the first track portion progress out of engagement with the nose portion of said given drive element.
U.S. Patent No. 3,929,220 discloses a conveyor for feeding pallets to a tile making machine, the conveyor including a chain having a linear driving run, parallel with a pallet support track and having pushers spaced therealong, the pushers having noses to engage pallets on the track and followers each of which, when the associated pusher is moving along the driving run, engages a follower track, the track being angled relative to the driving run, and causes the associated nose to travel along the driving run at a constant speed less than the speed of the driving run, the follower being adjustable to vary the distance between a nose of a pusher whose follower is part way along the follower track and the nose of a pusher whose follower is at the start of the follower track to thereby make up for chain wear and for different pallet lengths.
These arrangements are however quite complex and therefore expensive to manufacture.
In addition such machines can only handle standard sized pallets. Thus if a non standard tile is required for a particular purpose it cannot be formed in a machine using either of these mechanisms.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided conveyor means for feeding a plurality of pallets in an end-to-end succession to a pallet filling device comprising a pallet guide track, a cam track surface which is substantially parallel to the guide track whose length is a multiple of the length of a pallet, drive chain means forming an endless chain loop having a portion passing over and parallel with the cam track surface, a plurality of cam follower means attached to the chain loop and space apart by a distance substantially equal to a multiple of the length of a pallet so that in use at least one of the follower means contacts the cam track surface, and pallet pusher means attached to the cam follower means for advancing pallets along the guide track.
Preferably the cam followers are equally spaced on an endless chain whose length is chosen such that the space between each follower is equivalent to two pallet lengths.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a view of one side of the conveyor means of this invention.
The embodiment of the invention described below is substantially symmetrical so that although only one side is illustrated it is to be understood that duplicate components are required for the other side in a spaced but parallel relationship to the first.
The conveyor means for feeding a plurality of pallets 3 in an end-to-end succession to a pallet filling device 9 comprises a pallet guide track 1, a cam track surface 2 which is substantially parallel to the guide track 1 and whose length is twice the length of a pallet 3, drive chain means including an endless chain 4 looped around sprockets 7, 8 the latter of which is driven via chain 10 from a motor not shown. The chain 4 passes over and parallel to the cam track surface 2. Cam follower means including a carriage 5 provided with a roller 1 5 for rolling contact with the cam track surface 2 is attached to the chain 4 at 1 7. A plurality of such cam follower means is provided, each equally spaced on the chain 4 such that the distance between each follower is equivalent to two pallet lengths.
Pallet pusher means including a pusher head 6 mounted on a support member 1 6 is attached to the chain 4 through a common fixing 1 7 also used to attach the cam follower means to the chain 4.
In use, the pallets 3 dimensioned and shaped in accordance with the requirements of the concrete tile to be produced, are placed on an endless belt infeed conveyor (not shown) and carried through an oil spray cabinet (not shown) to have the upper surfaces thereof covered with a mould release oil. After the oiling process, the pallets 3 are conveyed on to the guide track 1 along which they are pushed in an end-to-end succession through the machine 7 by means of the pallet pusher heads 6 which engage the undersides of every second pallet in succession. The pallet pusher heads 6 are in turn brought into contact with successive alternate pallets by means of the cam follower means (5,1 5) contact the cam track surface 2 and are advanced by means of a drive chain 4 such that at any one time at least one of the pusher heads is brought into contact with a pallet 3.
The pallets are in this way fed at a continuous speed into the pallet filling device 9.
By altering the length of the chain 4, the spacing between the pusher means and the length of the cam track surface 2, it is possible to manufacture different sizes of tiles.
