Abstract

The tool has parallel arms adapted to fit the stud, or bolt, openings, of a hub and of a wheel to ensure that the correct alignment of the said hub and wheel, in relation to the studs, or bolts used for fixing. The device will ensure that the wheel be positioned with the minimum of effort. The vehicle only needs to be lifted, or jacked up, so the wheel is just free of the ground and the tool inserted into the top two holes of the wheel and aligned with the hub and lifted upwards, placing a foot against the bottom of the wheel to position, whilst nuts or bolts are applied and the device removed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Wheel lifter This invention relates to a wheel mounting device and, more particularly, to a lifting and locating device for wheels of the type in which the wheel is secured on the hub by means of remable bolts or studs inserted through spaced openings in the wheel and secured in similarly spaced openings in the hub aligned therewith.
In mounting wheels onto their hubs, the vehicle and hub mounted thereon, is lifted by means of a jack or equivalent device, to a height slightly above that corresponding to its normal position when the wheel is mounted.
The wheel must then be lifted from the ground until its bolt or stud holes are in alignment with the corresponding opening of the hub and the security bolts or studs are fitted into and secured in the openings.
An object of my present invention is to provide a device by which a wheel may be readily and easily lifted to its proper position.
In accordance with the present invention, I provide a wheel mounting device comprising an aligning tool having a pair of spaced parallel arms, adapted to be inserted through spaced openings of a wheel and a hub member or spaced openings of a wheel and for engaging a hub stud.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows a wheel lifter having a fabricated hand hold, Fig. 2 shows a wheel lifter having a formed hand hold.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference numerals 1 Et 2 indicate the parallel forks which have sleeve-like formations to enable forks to be placed over the threaded studs on a wheel hub.
Alternatively, the formation could comprise adaptors for introduction into threaded holes in the hub in cases where the wheel is secured to the hub by means of bolts.
For this purpose the lifting and locating device is provided with a pair of spaced parallel forks, rigidly mounted in position with respect to the hand hold. The axial centres of the arms being spaced apart at a distance between centres of two of the openings of the wheel.
1. A wheel lifter for use in the mounting of wheels of vehicles, particularly motor vehicles, comprising two parallel forks, each having at one end a formation for engaging a hub stud of the vehicle or for engagement in a threaded hole in the hub.
2. A device accordingly to claim 1, in which the forks are of equal length.
3. A wheel lifter according to claim 1, wherein the hand hold is of a fabricated nature.
4. A wheel lifter according to claim 2, in which the hand hold is of a formed nature.
5. A wheel lifter according to claim 1 s 2, in which adaptors may be fixed to insert into a threaded hole, each adaptor may be tapered to a rounded point.
6. A wheel lifter according to claim 1 8 2, which may be plastic injected moulded construction.
7. A wheel lifter constructed and arranged substantially as here in described and as shown in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
