Abstract

A safety attachment for a door comprises a strip 1 of stiff but flexible material in the form of a web 2-4 having at its outer edges flanges 5,6, one of which 5 is attached to the door face and the other to the jamb 9. The attachment 1 assumes an extended form bridging the gap between the door edge and the jamb 9 when the door 7 is open and a contracted form with the web 2-4 in a substantially closed configuration extending outwardly from the gap in the closed position of the door 7 whereby insertion and trapping of members such as a child's fingers in the gap during door closing may be prevented. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Safety attachment for a door The subject of this invention is a safety attachment for fitting to a door and is intended to prevent the accidental insertion of fingers into the hinge portion of thedoorwherithe door is open with the consequent dailgerto theffngers becoming jammed. Children are particularly prone to this form of accident.
The invention also includes a door assembly incorporating the safety attachment.
An attachment according to the invention comprises a strip of stiff butflexible material folded to present two leaves connected along adjacent edges with the other edge of each leaf formed as a flange to be attachable respectivelytottheopening part of the door and the door jamb.
The strip may be formed of plastics material of a type which while being rigid also allows of some degree offlexing or may be formed of a thin strip of flexible metallic material.
The two leaves may be connected along their adjacent edges by a U-shaped portion or may be directly connected to one another i.e. by the strip being bent at a sharp angle along a longitudinal line to form two leaves. Where the two leaves are connected by a U-shaped portion the strip may be bent longitudinally about a small radius therebyforming two leaves.
The flanges may be formed with a series of holes for the reception of nails such as panel pins to facilitate attachment of the strip.
The invention also comprises a door assembly including a door hinged to a door case and an attachment consisting of a strip of stiff but flexible material formed as described, with one flange attached to the door proper and the otherto the jamb carrying the door hinges so thatthe attachment bridges the gap between the door proper and the jamb, the location of the attachment being such that when the door is closed the two leaves ofthe attachment are close to one another and substantially parallel.
A practical embodimentoftheinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view ofthe safety attachment, Fig. 2 shows the assembly of a portionofadoorproperandthe door case and Fig. 3 is a section through the line 3-3 in Fig.2.
In the drawings 1 denotes a strip of stiff butflexible material folded along the line 2 to present two leaves 3 and 4 which are flanged respectively at Sand 6.7 denotes a door proper hinged at 8 to jambs 9 and 10.
The strip 1 isshown connected in place between the door properatthe hinged edge and the adjacent door jamb 9. Tize strip is normally made of a length sufficientto prevent children of various heights from being-ableto inserttheirfingers into the gap between theedgeofthedoorproperandthedoorjambswhen the door is open.
In practice when the door is closed the two leaves 3 and 4 are substantially parallel to one another and when the door is opened the leaves swing apart about the bend line 2 so thatthey bridge the gap between the door proper and the door jamb.
1. A door assembly including a door having one edge hingedly connected to a door case and an attachment comprising a strip of stiff but flexible material in the form of a web having at its outer edges flange means, with one said flange means attached to the doorface adjacent said edge remote from said hinges and the other to the jamb carrying the door hinges atthejamb side remote from the hinges so that theattachementassumesan extended form bridging the gap between said door edge and said jamb when the door is open and a contracted form with the web in a substantially closed configuration extending out wardlyfrom the gap between said door edge and said jamb in the closed position ofthe door.
2. A door assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the web is in the form of two generally planar leaves extending side-by-side longitudinally of the strip.
3. A door assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the leaves are interconnected in a generally V-shaped configuration.
4. Adoorassembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the leaves are interconnected in a generally U-shaped configuration.
5. A door assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the flange means extends outwardly of the web.
6. A door assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the fla nge means extends inwardly of the web generally towards each other.
7. Adoorassemblyasclaimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the strip is of a stiff butflexible plastics material.
8. A door assembly as claimed in claim 7 wherein the strip is of polyvinylchloride.
9. A door assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the strip extends substantiallyfrom the base ofthe doorfor at least half the height of the door.
10. A door assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein said web is formed and arranged and has a width so that in its extended form it has a widthwise generally convex configuration extending away from said gap and resistantto movement inwardly ofthe gap bythe application of pressure to said web.
11. An attachmentfor a door assembly according to claim 1 which attachment comprises a strip of stiff but flexible material folded to present two leaves connected along adjacent edges with the other edge of each leaf provided with a flange formed and arranged for attachment to a respective one of the opening part of the door and the door jamb.
12. A door assembly according to claim 1 substantially as described hereinbefore with particular refer The drawing(s) originally filed was (were) informal and the print here reproduced is taken from a later filed formal copy This print takes account of replacement documents submitted after the date of filing to enable the application to comply with the formal requirements of the Patents Rules 1982.
