Rollers, spindles, tubes, and the like, treating.-In a machine for grinding the periphery of pins, rollers, tubes, &c. wherein the work 6, Fig. 2, is fed in a guide channel across the face of a single grinding disc 10 and the rate of axial feed of the work is varied by adjustment of the guide channel parallel to the face of the disc as described in Specification 139,366, means are provided for effecting a limited relative movement of the workrest 2 relatively to the disc to allow of the introduction of work having an enlargement at one or both ends. The guide-channel is formed by plates 3, 4, 5 carried by the work-rest 2, which is pivoted to a carrier 8 capable of tilting about a shaft 9 to vary the direction of feed of the work. An eccentric shaft 11 journaled in a bracket secured to the work-rest 2 engages a channel 12 formed in the carrier 8. Rotation of this shaft against the action of a spring withdraws the workrest a limited distance from the disc 10. The plate 3 is omitted when work having an enlargement at both ends is operated upon. The tilting movement of the carrier is limited by adjustable stops, and in a modification, shown in Fig. 5, a cam handle 26 replaces the eccentric shaft. In the construction shown in Fig. 10, the eccentric shaft 11 is retained but the work-rest 2 slides upon a stud 42 adjustably mounted on the carrier 8. Alternatively a sleeve, nut 44, Fig. 12, may be placed around the usual feed screw 45, and by locking the hand-wheel 47 a limited movement of the work-rest is obtained upon movement of a handle 48 secured to the sleeve nut. A circular rack 30, Fig. 8, ma.y be formed in the shaft 9 or in a sleeve surrounding the shaft, so that the limited withdrawal of the work-rest 2 is effected by rotation of a pinion 29 meshing with the rack, a spring 31 effecting the return movement of the work-rest. In the construction shown in Fig. 13, the rate and direction of feed is varied by moving the work-rest approximately parallel to the disc 10 by means of a screw 54, and the limited movement is obtained by a rack and pinion 57, 58. The rack and pinion may be omitted, the limited movement necessary for insertion of the work being obtained by having the screw 54 inclined away from the disc 10. In a further modification the limited relative movement is obtained by moving the grinding-disc away from the workrest. Annular packing-rings 50 exclude water from the bearing of the shaft 9.
