Abstract
213,712. Hoofnagle, W. T. Jan. 23, 1923. Electric hand-irons.-The iron consisting of a sole-plate a containing the heating resistance and covered by a handled-top b made of heat insulating material such as asbestos composition is provided with a hollow plug containing an accessible fuse and an inaccessible fuse of different melting points and with a filament visible through the top of the plug to indicate when current is flowing. The plug comprises an insulating body externally screw-threaded and metal-sheathed to contact with a fixed threaded metal sleeve 17 in electrical connection by a plate 17<a> with one terminal of the iron. A circular hole 24 in the plug slidably receives the shank 32<a> of a metal head 32 prevented from rotating by a square ring 32<b> received in a square continuation of the central hole of the plug. A metal ring 26 secured in place and connected to another metal ring 27 by bolts 28 surrounds a boss 25 on the plug and forms, with head 32, a clamp to hold the fusible strip 33. When the plug is screwed down the head engages a contact plate d in electrical connection with the other terminal of the iron. The head 32 is grooved and the plate d is dished to catch any fused metal. The ring 27 and sheath 18 are connected by a filament 31 visible through the transparent cover 20 and by a fuse wire 30 which by reason of its location is not accessible and serves as a further safety fuse. Spare fuses 13 are kept in a recess in the top covered by a metal plate 14.
