Abstract

A sales package comprises a transparent base 10 and a transparent cover sheet 11 fitted to the edges of the base, the cover sheet having been printed on its underside with different coloured layers 12, 13, 14 of advertising material to be viewed from above through the cover sheet and with bar coding 18 to be viewed from below via the transparent base 10. A metallic layer 16 is provided between the bar coding 18 and the surface of the underside of the cover sheet 11, so that the bar coding can be viewed through the transparent base but is not visible from the front of the package. Preferably on each side of the metallic layer is a contrast layer, one (15) forming a background to the advertising material, and the other (17) forming a background to the bar coding. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Transparent material bearing printed matter and a method of applying such printed matter The invention relates to transparent material bearing printed matter and a method of applying such printed matter.
In the packaging of goods for sale, it is conventional practice to apply bar coding designed to be read automatically by machinery at the point of sale, e.g. at the cash desk of a supermarket. When this bar coding is applied to packaging it is frequently located on a rear side of the packaging so that it is inconspicuous and is not seen by a person reading advertising material on the front side, This however involves printing on two different parts of the package.
According to the present invention a sheet of transparent packaging material has layers of printing thereon, one layer comprising bar coding having a metallic layer next, or closely adjacent thereto, a metallic layer.
In this way, the bar coding is not visible, or at worst is only partially visible, through the transparent sheet so that different information can be viewed from opposite sides of the same sheet.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the acsompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a transparent package having a cover sheet bearing advertising material. The lower part of Fig. 1 illustrates diagrammatically the way in which layers of printing are applied to the underside of the cover sheet. The upper part of Fig. 1 shows an alternative in which the printing is applied to the upper side of the cover sheet. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, on a reduced scale, of the underside of the package of Fig. 1.
In the particular example shown in Fig. 1, the package is made up of a transparent base sheet 10 of plastics material, which is pressed to the shape of a flanged tray for containing goods to be sold, and this is covered by a cover sheet 11 of transparent plastic material, for example polypropylene. Before the cover sheet is applied to the base sheet, printing is applied to that side of the cover sheet which will be directed inwardly against the contents of the final package, i.e. the underside of sheet 11 in Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated in the lowest part of Fig. 1 the printing is 'in reverse' since, except for the bar coding, it will be viewed from the front or upper side of the package through the transparent cover sheet 1 The printing of the advertising material is applied by passing the sheet in succession through black, red and yellow printing rollers to form layers 12, 13, 14 in black, red and yellow respectively. The sheet is then passed in succession through printing rollers preferably to apply a contrast layer 1 5 (e.g. white) to provide a background for the advertising material and then an opaque silver metallic layer 1 6. Thereafter it is passed through printing rollers to apply a white or other layer 1 7 to contrast with the bar coding colour, and finally through printing rollers to apply the bar coding layer 18, and any other information. The bar coding will normally be in a colour that contrasts with the background material and is suitable for reading by automatic equipment. The colour is usually black. The sheet 11 is then caused to adhere to the flange of the tray 10 to complete the package, the printed side of the sheet being on the inside of the package so that the advertising matter is seen through the cover sheet and the lsar coding is seen through the transparent base sheet. The bar coding is so located with respect to the contents of the package, as seen in Fig. 2, that it can be viewed through the base sheet 10 of the package without the contents of the package getting in the way. By arranging the transparent base sheet 10 to cover the printing on the underside of the cover sheet 11 , the printing is protected against scratching.
In the alternative shown in the upper part of Fig. 1 , the layers, indicated by the same reference numbers, are applied to the upper face of the cover sheet 11 and are therefore applied in the reverse order. The bar coding is, in this case, the first layer 1 8 to be applied to the transparent sheet 11 and will thus be visible through sheet 11 when viewed from its underside.
In particular, further layers of printing can be applied on the side of the metallic layer opposite the bar coding to provide advertising material (including dirsctions as to use). For example the layers providing advertising material could be adjacent the transparent sheet for viewing through the transparent sheet. Alternatively, the bar coding could be applied directly to the transparent sheet for viewing through the transparent sheet, and the other layers superimposed on t;he bar coding.
As a further alternative, some of the layers could be on one side of the transparent sheet, and some on the other. In any of these alternatives, further advertising material could be printed on the same side of the metallic layer as the bar coding, to enable different advertising material to be viewed from either side of the sheet.
Although the invention has been described in the form of a printed top sheet applied to a transparent base sheet, the base sheet is not an essential part of the invention, and the goods to be displayed can be attached in some other way to the printed transparent sheet.
