Abstract

A seat structure has a plane portion 1 having a peripheral rib 6 which, when in use, projects downwardly, an external rim 2 having a plurality of radially inwardly projecting lugs 3, and an internal ring 5 positioned within the rim, the ring having a lower radial flange secured removably to the lugs by screws 4, the plane portion overlying the ring and having its peripheral rib engaged and held between an upper part of the rim and an upper part of the ring. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A seat structure The present invention relates to a seat structure for a chair, and its object is to provide an improved construction which is particularly advantageous in chairs of plastics materials.
According to the present invention, a seat structure comprises: (i) a plane portion having a peripheral rib which, when in use, projects downwardly, (ii) an external rim having a plurality of radially inwardly projecting lugs, (iii) an internal ring positioned within the rim, said ring having a lower radial flange secured removably to said lugs, the plane portion overlying the ring and having its peripheral rib engaged and held between an upper part of the rim and an upper part of the ring.
In a preferred construction, the peripheral rib has inner and outer recesses, and the internal ring has an upper radial flange, the upper part of the ring engaging in one of said recesses and said upper radial flange engaging in the other of said recesses.
Conveniently said lower radial flange has a plurality of openings to receive screws serving to secure tke flange removably to the lugs.
An embodiment of seat structure in accordance with the invention is hereinafter particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: Fig. 1 is a plan view of a seat structure; Fig. 2 is a partial transverse section of the seat structure, in assembled condition; Fig. 3 is a partial transverse section of the component parts of the seat structure, seen in separated condition.
As can be seen from Fig. 1 a plane portion 1 of the seat structure, for example of a type having imitation Vienna basketry, is enclosed by a circular two-part frame, the construction of which is best seen in Fig. 2.
The frame is constituted by an external rim element 2 having its cross-section in the form of an inverted "L". The rim 2 is provided with radial inwardly-directed lugs 3 of triangular shape which permit the fastening, by means of screws 4, of an internal ring 5. The ring 5 has its cross-section in the form of a "U". An upper out-turned flange 9, at the top of the ring 5, engages into an inner recess in a peripheral rib 6 of the portion 1.
The upper inturned edge of the rim 2 engages into an outer recess of the rib 6.
In the separated view of Fig. 3, it can be seen that the internal ring 5, with its section in the form of a "U", has a lower flange 7, of greater length than flange 9, provided with holes 8 to receive screws 4 for attaching the ring 5 to the bracing lugs 3. The upper flange 9 is of smaller size, and engages in the recess 10 of the rib 6. When the screws 4 are fastened, the rib 6 cannot be extracted from the holding means constituted by the rim 2 and the ring 5 assembled in this manner.
There is achieved in this manner great stability of the plane portion 1 in relation to its frame, together with a great facility of assembly of the component parts.
The seat structure has advantages both from the point of view of solidity of the same and from the point of view of assembly facilitated at the place of manufacture.
1. A seat structure comprising: (i) a plane portion have a peripheral rib which, when in use, projects downwardly, (ii) an external rim having a plurality of radially inwardly projecting lugs, (iii) an internal ring positioned within the rim, said ring having a lower radial flange secured removably to said lugs, the plane portion overlying the ring and having its peripheral rib engaged and held between an upper part of the rim and an upper part of the ring.
2. A seat structure, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the peripheral rib has inner and outer recesses, and wherein the internal ring has an upper radial flange, the upper part of the ring engaging in one of said recesses and said upper radial flange engaging in the other of said recesses.
3. A seat structure, as claimed in either of claims 1 and 2, wherein said lower radial flange has a plurality of openings to receive screws serving to secure the flange removably to the lugs.
4. A seat structure substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
