Abstract

An espagnolette for a hinged door, with an espagnolette bar 10 movable longitudinally of the edge of the door to operate locking devices 13, and a latch 15 spring-biased to engage the frame. An operating handle is movable in one sense to engage the locking devices, and in the opposite sense to disengage the locking devices and disengage the latch. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Espagnolette This invention relates to an espagnolette fastening for a pivotally openable door.
The invention provides an espagnolette for a door which is pivotally openable relative to a fixed frame, comprising an espagnolette bar which in use is mounted for movement longitudinally of an opening edge of the door, locking means operable by the espagnolette bar and engagable with the frame, a latch engagable with the frame, and an operating mechanism including a handle movable between a first and second position to engage said locking means with the frame and a third position wherein, with said locking means disengaged from the frame, said latch is disengaged from the frame.
Preferably the latch is spring biased into engagement with the frame when the handle is in the first and second of said positions, and is retractable against its spring biasing as the door is closed.
There may be provided a key operated locking mechanism, operable to prevent said handle moving between the first said positions thereof, i.e. to prevent movement of said espagnolette bar.
These and other features of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic part section through an espagnolette according to the invention; Figure 2 is a view as figure 1, in another operating position.
The illustrated espagnolette comprises an espagnolette bar 10 which is adapted to be mounted in the opening edge of a pivotally opening door, for movement longitudinally of such edge. Adjacent its upper end, the espagnolette bar 10 is provided with a toothed rack formation 11 engagable with a pinion 1 2 by which a pivotally mounted locking member 1 3 is moved between a retracted position, shown in figure 1, and an extended locking position shown in figure 2 in which it is engagable with the fixed frame within which the door is mounted. The espagnolette bar would be provided with another rack formation for moving another locking member adjacent its lower end, and any further number of like rack formations along its length as required.
Set into the edge of the door at a convenient height thereon, typically adjacent the centre of the espagnolette bar, there is provided a housing 14 containing an operating mechanism for the espagnolette. The espagnolette bar 10 is movable through aligned apertures in the part of the housing which lies against the opening edge of the door. The housing contains a latch 1 5 which is spring biased, by a spring 16, to a position in which it extends out of the housing, as illustrated.
Supported within the housing for angular movement is a sector plate 17, having a boss with a square aperture 1 8 for receiving a square shaft carrying a handle whereby the sector plate can be moved. The sector plate carries two spaced operating pegs 19, 20. A plate 21 is movable vertically within the housing 14, and has a tongue 22 which engages the espagnolette bar 10 so that the plate 21 moves therewith. At its upper end, the plate 21 has an abutment 23 which is bent to extend perpendicularly from the plate, to be engagable by operating pegs 1 9, 20 so that the plate is movable by angular movement of the plate. Adjacent its lower end, the plate has two spaced recesses 24, 25 engagable by a locking element 26 movable by a key operated lock 27.
Spring means, not shown, may be provided for returning the sector plate 1 7 to its central position illustrated, from which it can be moved through approximately 45 in the clockwise or anticlockwise sense.
The operation of the espagnolette is as follows.
It will be assumed initially that the operating parts thereof are in the relative positions shown in figure 1. If the door is closed, the latch 1 5 will hold the door against opening. If the door is open, the latch 1 5 will retract against its biasing spring 1 6 as the door is closed, the latch having a cam formation at its end as is conventional. If it is desired to open the door, the sector plate 1 7 can be moved approximately 45 degrees in the anticlockwise sense with reference to the drawing, by the handle, so that operating peg 1 9 abuts the rear end of the latch 1 5 and retracts the latch to permit the door to be open.
When the door is closed, the sector plate 1 7 can be moved approximately 45 degrees in the clockwise sense as illustrated, which will move the plate 21 downwardly provided that the key operated lock 27 has been used to disengage the locking member 26 from recess 25. Operating peg 1 9 pushes the plate 21 downwardly. This causes locking members 13 to protrude from the door and engage the frame, by the action of rack and pinion 11, 12. In this state, the locking member 26 engages recess 24, and this condition is shown in figure 2 of the drawings. From this state, provided the lock 27 has been operated by the appropriate key, sector plate 1 7 can be moved in the anticlockwise sense to raise the espagnolette bar 10 and retract the locking member 13, and also retract latch 1 5 to enable the door to be opened.
