Abstract

A node element for use in a structural space frame consists of two clamping members 10, 12 and three holders 14, 16 for elongate frame elements 50, 52, 56, 58 which are clamped between the two members 10, 12 with two of the holders 14, 16 being held opposite each other between the clamping members and each including three frame element attaching means with the remaining element 14 being located between the first two and having two frame element attaching means on opposite sides of the node for holding frame elements 50, 52 attached to it in axial alignment. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A space frame node element This invention relates to a node member for use in joining elongate elements in a space frame.
A space frame node according to the invention includes two clamping members and at least two holders for elongate space frame elements which each include means for releasibly attaching a space frame element to it, interengaging formations on both the clamping members and frame element holders and means for holding the clamping members together to hold the frame element holders between them.
Preferably, each of the frame element holders includes means for attaching at least two space frame elements to it.
Further according to the invention the node includes three frame element holders with two of the holders being held opposite each other between the clamping members and each including three frame element attaching means with the remaining element being located between the first two and have two frame element attaching means on opposite sides of the node for, holding frame elements attached to it in axial alignment. The free element holders each have one element attaching means for holding a frame element in the same plane as and at right angles to the frame elements on the central element holder with the remaining two element attaching means being positioned on the holders to hold diagonal frame elements to the node.
An embodiment of the invention is now described by way of example only with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the components of the node of the invention, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the assembled node.
The node of the invention is shown in Figure 1 to consist of clamping members 10 and 12 and three frame element holders 14, 16, and 18. Only the holders 14 and 16 are illustrated in Figure 1 as the holder 1 8 is identical to the holder 1 6. All of the node components are forged.
The clamping member 10 consists of a hub section 20 from which two arms 22 project in a radial direction. The hub carries an axial hole 24 and a square recess, not shown, in its underside.
The arms 22 each carry a recess 26 in their undersides adjacent their free ends.
The clamping member 12 is shaped as shown in the drawing with two recesses 28, and a recess 30 in its upper surface.
The frame element holder 1 4 consists of a hub 34 from which two wings 36 which have holed ends project. Anchor formation 38 project from opposite lower ends of the hub 34.
The holders 1 6 and 18 are, as seen in the drawing, substantially seat shaped with three sides which are holed at 40, 42 and 44. The holed sides of the holders are arranged relatively to each other so that the axes of the holes are at 450 to each other. The holder carries upper and lower locating lugs 46 and 48 respectively.
To assemble the node, two chord elements 50 and 52 of the frame are secured to the holder 14, as shown in Figure 2, by screws which are screwed up into ferrules on the ends of the elements through the holes in the wings 36. Two further chord elements 54 and 56 are attached in the same manner to the holders 1 6 and 1 8 through their holes 40. Two diagonal frame elements 58 are then secured to each of the holders through their holes 42 and 44. The frame elements are conveniently, but not necessarily, attached to the holders 1 6 and 1 8 remote from the node position in the frame. The holders 1 6 and 1 8 are then positioned adjacent the holder 14 as shown in the drawing. The clamping members are then located over the assembled holders with the vertical ends of the holder 14 seated in the central recesses in the clamping members and the lugs 46 and 48 of the holders 16 and 1 8 located in the recesses 26 and 28 of the clamping members with the anchor formations 38 holding the holders 1 6 and 18 against vertical movement relatively to the holder 14. A clamping bolt 60 is then passed through the aligned holes in the clamping members and the holder 14 and locked in position by a nut 62 to hold the various elements of the node together.
1. A space frame node element including two clamping members and at least two holders for elongate space frame elements which each include means for releasibly attaching a space frame element to it, interengaging formations on both the clamping members and frame element holders and means for holding the clamping members together to hold the frame element holders between them.
2. A node element as claimed in claim 1 in which each of the frame elements holders includes means for attaching at least two space frame elements to it.
3. A node element as claimed in either one of claims 1 or 2 including three frame element holders with two of the holders being held opposite each other between the clamping members and each including three frame element attaching means with the remaining element being located between the first two and having two frame element attaching means on opposite sides of the node for holding frame elements attached to it in axial alignment.
4. A node element as claimed in claim 3 in which the three element holders each have one element attaching means for holding frame element in the same plane as and at right angles to the frame elements on the central holder with
