Abstract

A stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined position, comprising a base portion 10 to which is hinged a support portion 12 by means of hinges 11, a stay 13 being hinged to the rear of the support portion 12 and engaged with a slider 15 mounted for sliding movement on the base portion 10 to adjust the angle of inclination of the support portion 12, the slider 15 being moved by a manually rotatable wheel which moves an eccentric disc engaged with the slider 15. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Book stand This invention relates to a stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined open position so that the book or other reading matter can be read.

According to the present invention there is provided a stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined position, comprising a base portion, a support portion hinged to said base portion, a stay hinged to the rear side of the support portion, said stay being engageable with a slider mounted for sliding movement on the base portion in order to adjust the angle of inclination of the support portion relative to the base portion, and means for effecting movement of the slider.

Preferably means for effecting movement of the slider comprises a wheel mounted for rotation on the base portion, said wheel having thereon an eccentric disc engaged with the slider.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa perspective front view of the book stand in a operative position, Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the book stand, and Figure 3 is a view on the underside with a cover plate removed and the support in the same plane as the base.

The book stand comprises a base portion 10 which in plan view is substantially T-shaped. Hinged to the base portion 10 by hinges 11 is support portion 12 which can be moved between a position in which it lies in the same plane as the base portion 10, as shown in Figure 3, and an inclined position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The rear side of the support portion 12 is provided with a stay 13 which is hinged to the support portion 12 by hinges 14 and the bottom end of the stay 13 is engaged with a slider 15 when in the inclined position. When the support portion 12 is to be placed in the plane of the base portion 10, for storage and transportation, the bottom end of the stay 13 is disengaged from the slider 15.

As will be seen from Figure 3, the slider 15 has an end portion 16 provided with a slot 17. Received within the slot 17 is the axle 18 of a wheel 19 whose outer periphery is provided with teeth or serrations 20 or knurled. Provided on the underside of the wheel 19 is an eccentric disc 21 which forms part of the wheeel 19. The periphery of the disc 21 is engaged by flanged surfaces 22 provided on the slider 15. Engaged with the teeth or serrations 20 are two resilient fingers 23 mounted on the base 10.

It will be appreciated that when the bottom end of the stay 13 is engaged with the end portion of the slider 15 rotation of the wheel 19 by hand overcomes the resilience of the fingers 23 and the periphery of the eccentric disc 21 acting on the flanged surfaces 22 causes the slider 15 to slide in one direction or the other and adjusts the inclination of the support portion 12. The wheel 19 extends through an opening in the front part of the base 10 to enable itto be rotated by hand.

Provided on the upper side of the base porton 10 are two fixed members 24 through which extend a wire member 25 having limbs 26. When a book is placed on the stand and rests against the support portion 12, when in a inclined position, the ends of the limbs 26 are used to hold open the pages of the book.

The support portion can be provided with a mirror 27 and with a photo or picture frame 28.

The parts of the stand are all preferably formed of plastics material apart from the wire member 25 which is preferably metal.

A stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined position, comprising a base portion, a support portion hinged to said base portion, a stay hinged to the rear side of the support portion, said stay being engageable with a slider mounted for sliding movement on the base portion in order to adjust the angle of inclination of the support portion relative to the base portion, and means for effecting movement of the slider.

2. A stand as claimed in claim 1, in which said means for effecting movement of the slider comprises a wheel mounted for rotation on the base portion, said wheel having thereon an eccentric disc engaged with the slider.

3. A stand as claimed in claim 2, in which the periphery of the disc is serrated or provided with teeth engaged by at least one resilient finger member.

4. A stand as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the bottom end of the stay is disengageably from the slider to enable the support portion to be moved about the hinge to a position in which the support portion lies in the same plane as the base portion.

5. A stand as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the base portion is provided on its upper side with a pivotable wire member for holding open the pages of a book when supported by the stand.

6. A stand as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the support portion is provided with a mirror and/or a picture or photo-frame.

7. A stand for supporting a book or other matter in a vertically inclined position, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

SPECIFICATION Book stand This invention relates to a stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined open position so that the book or other reading matter can be read. According to the present invention there is provided a stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined position, comprising a base portion, a support portion hinged to said base portion, a stay hinged to the rear side of the support portion, said stay being engageable with a slider mounted for sliding movement on the base portion in order to adjust the angle of inclination of the support portion relative to the base portion, and means for effecting movement of the slider. Preferably means for effecting movement of the slider comprises a wheel mounted for rotation on the base portion, said wheel having thereon an eccentric disc engaged with the slider. An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa perspective front view of the book stand in a operative position, Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the book stand, and Figure 3 is a view on the underside with a cover plate removed and the support in the same plane as the base. The book stand comprises a base portion 10 which in plan view is substantially T-shaped. Hinged to the base portion 10 by hinges 11 is support portion 12 which can be moved between a position in which it lies in the same plane as the base portion 10, as shown in Figure 3, and an inclined position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The rear side of the support portion 12 is provided with a stay 13 which is hinged to the support portion 12 by hinges 14 and the bottom end of the stay 13 is engaged with a slider 15 when in the inclined position. When the support portion 12 is to be placed in the plane of the base portion 10, for storage and transportation, the bottom end of the stay 13 is disengaged from the slider 15. As will be seen from Figure 3, the slider 15 has an end portion 16 provided with a slot 17. Received within the slot 17 is the axle 18 of a wheel 19 whose outer periphery is provided with teeth or serrations 20 or knurled. Provided on the underside of the wheel 19 is an eccentric disc 21 which forms part of the wheeel 19. The periphery of the disc 21 is engaged by flanged surfaces 22 provided on the slider 15. Engaged with the teeth or serrations 20 are two resilient fingers 23 mounted on the base 10. It will be appreciated that when the bottom end of the stay 13 is engaged with the end portion of the slider 15 rotation of the wheel 19 by hand overcomes the resilience of the fingers 23 and the periphery of the eccentric disc 21 acting on the flanged surfaces 22 causes the slider 15 to slide in one direction or the other and adjusts the inclination of the support portion 12. The wheel 19 extends through an opening in the front part of the base 10 to enable itto be rotated by hand. Provided on the upper side of the base porton 10 are two fixed members 24 through which extend a wire member 25 having limbs 26. When a book is placed on the stand and rests against the support portion 12, when in a inclined position, the ends of the limbs 26 are used to hold open the pages of the book. The support portion can be provided with a mirror 27 and with a photo or picture frame 28. 1. A stand for supporting a book or other reading matter in a vertically inclined position, comprising a base portion, a support portion hinged to said base portion, a stay hinged to the rear side of the support portion, said stay being engageable with a slider mounted for sliding movement on the base portion in order to adjust the angle of inclination of the support portion relative to the base portion, and means for effecting movement of the slider.

2. A stand as claimed in claim 1, in which said means for effecting movement of the slider comprises a wheel mounted for rotation on the base portion, said wheel having thereon an eccentric disc engaged with the slider.

3. A stand as claimed in claim 2, in which the periphery of the disc is serrated or provided with teeth engaged by at least one resilient finger member.

4. A stand as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the bottom end of the stay is disengageably from the slider to enable the support portion to be moved about the hinge to a position in which the support portion lies in the same plane as the base portion.

5. A stand as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the base portion is provided on its upper side with a pivotable wire member for holding open the pages of a book when supported by the stand.

6. A stand as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the support portion is provided with a mirror and/or a picture or photo-frame.

7. A stand for supporting a book or other matter in a vertically inclined position, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
