Description
SPECIFICATION
A sheep-shearing comb
This invention relates to sheep-shearing combs.
In one conventional form of sheep-shearing comb, the comb has so-called top and bottom teeth both of which extend beyond the tips of the so-called centre teeth. In such combs, the tips of the centre teeth are profiled on the backs of the teeth, the profiles all being of a common configuration at least in the direction of the length of the teeth.
Previously hitherto, the tips of the centre teeth have lain on a common line curved either convexly or concavely in the plane of the comb with respect to the direction in which the teeth extend. With the top and bottom teeth extending beyond the tips of the centre teeth, this has made for manufacturing difficulties in ensuring the commonality of configuration in the profiling of the tips of the centre teeth.
Such manufacturing difficulties are alleviated by the configuration of comb according to the present invention.
The present invention provides a sheepshearing comb of which the top and bottom teeth extend beyond the tips of the centre teeth and in which the backs of the centre teeth are all profiled to a common configuration in the direction of the length of the teeth, characterised in that the extremities of the tips of the centre teeth all lie on a common straight line.
The straight line of the tips of the centre teeth may extend parallel to the general plane of the comb and at right angles to the centre line of the comb.
The outer edge of the bottom tooth may curve inwardly or outwardly of the comb in the general plane thereof or may be straight and the tip of the top tooth may curve outwardly of the comb also in the general plane thereof.
One embodiment of the present invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Fig. 1 shows the comb as viewed from the cutting face, and
Fig. 2 shows, on an enlarged scale, a side view of the tip of one of the centre teeth.
The comb, as conventionaily, is generally planar and the body 1 of the comb has the usual comb screw slots 2, grinding recesses 3, grinding locating holes 4 and groove 5.
Extending from the body 1 in the general plane of the comb are the centre teeth 6 lying between the bottom tooth 7 and the top tooth 8. As will be seen from Fig. 1 , the outer edge 9 of the bottom tooth 7 curves inwardly of the comb in continuation of the curved outer right-hand edge 10 of the body 1 of the comb. Similarly, the outer edge 11 of the top tooth 8 also, initially, curves inwardly of the comb in continuation of the curved outer left-hand edge 1 2 of the body 1 but, in this case, the tip 1 3 of the tooth 8 then curves outwardly of the comb.
As seen in Fig. 1 , the extremities of the tips 14 of the centre teeth 6 all lie in a common straight line 1 5. This line 1 5 lies parallel to the general plane of the comb (in particular, in the plane of the cutting face 16) and at right angles to its centre line 17.
The backs of all of the teeth are profiled to provide a bevel but, in particular, the backs 1 8 of the centre teeth 6 (as shown in Fig. 2) are all profiled to provide the so-called shearer's bevel 1 9 and the tip radius 22. This bevel 1 9 extends in the direction of the length of the respective tooth 6 and all of the bevels 19 and radii 22 are to a common configuration.
The other conventional bevels, 20 and 21 respectively, are also provided on the teeth 6, 7 and 8.
With previous combs, the extremities of the tips 14 of the centre teeth 6 have lain on a curved line which was curved either convexly or concavely with respect to the centre line 1 7. This led to difficulties of manufacture (especially with combs of which the tips of the centre teeth lie on a concave line) in ensuring commonality of the configuration of the profiles 1 9 on the backs of the centre teeth 6 and the tip radii 22. In contrast, by the alignment of the extremities of the tips 14 of the centre teeth 6 on the straight line 15, such commonality can readily be ensured merely by rotating the comb as a whole around appropriately located axes centred on the curvature of the required bevel 19 and the tip radius 22, with the teeth 6 held against a grinding surface parallel to the axis about which the comb is rotated.
1. A sheep-shearing comb of which the top and bottom teeth extend beyond the tips of the centre teeth and in which the backs of the centre teeth are all profiled to a common configuration in the direction of the length of the teeth, characterised in that the extremities of the tips of the centre teeth all lie on a common straight line.
2. A comb according to Claim 1 wherein the common straight line on which the extremities of the tips of the centre teeth all lie, extends parallel to the general plane of the comb and at right angles to the centre line of the comb.
3. A comb as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the outer edge of the bottom tooth curves either inwardly or outwardly of the comb in the general plane thereof.
4. A comb as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tip of the top tooth curves outwardly of the comb in the general plane thereof.
5. A comb substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
6. A method of manufacture of a comb as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the comb is formed to its general configuration and the bevels and tip radii are then

Claims (6)
6. A method of manufacture of a comb as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the comb is formed to its general configuration and the bevels and tip radii are then formed on the centre teeth by rotating the comb about appropriate axes centred on the curvatures required for the bevel and tip radii with the centre teeth held in engagement with a grinding surface moving substantially parallel to the axes about which the comb is rotated.
